I visited Alcatraz 2 years ago. It’s much smaller than you think it is. There’s only one building which is the actual prison. I spent a few mins in the solitary confinement cells and it’s so dark I felt going a lil fidgety after 5 mins
January 2020 is when I went to Alcatraz. Flew my mom out to California for her 70th birthday and we also went to Lake Tahoe, Muir woods, Pier 39 for dinner overlooking San Francisco bay, Stitton beach, California state railroad museum in Sacramento and Yosemite national park. Plus she reconnected with two brothers and met 3 nieces and a great niece.
@@wasilaify Its worse. Do not leave any valuables in your car. Ever. Streets are a sea of broken glass from smashed windows. Its visually appealing but has serious social issues, sort of like an open asylum.

Alcatraz was considered shockingly cruel and inhumane in its day, and yet it sounds like a 5 star resort compared to California's prison system of the early 21st Century.
Actually, no it wasn't. In fact, many inmates in the federal system requested transfer to Alcatraz because the living conditions were considered to be better. And it housed the "problem prisoners" from throughout the prison system, so don't feel too badly for them. They weren't boy scouts.
@MissyCeleste I'm guessing you meant "solitary". On Alcatraz, solitary confinement was a relatively short term measure to handle convicts who got into fights, tried to escape, assaulted guards, etcetera. That was the stereotype of the dark, closed cell. The period could last from a couple of days (just to cool off someone in a simple fight) to nineteen days (the maximum allowed). Now, after that, they COULD be put into segregation for years. Segregation at Alcatraz meant D-Block. Convicts where were generally in an open front cell, the same as the rest of the prison (albeit slightly larger as they stayed there pretty much all the time). They had meals brought to them (the same as served in the rest of the prison), they had no work privileges, the only time they left their cells were for a weekly shower and (if they were behaving) some time in the yard. They could get books and magazine from the library (delivered to their cells by the library orderly) and were allowed to talk quietly with their neighbours. (They could even play chess with their neighbour. Each man had a chess board and they called out their moves to one another).
Could you imagine how bad it would be if you couldn't talk for days and your alone? Lock yourself in your room without a phone, computer or other things inmates can't have just for an hour. It won't be the same because you know you can leave anytime or you can count down to an hour. It would be like being locked in there until someone says you can leave so you have no idea.
Having done some time in our current prison situation a few years back, I personally would have probably enjoyed the silence. The one thing that drove me most nuts about prison was the loud idiotic noise.
The rule of silence actually ended after the first few years. It proved pretty much unenforceable. One couldn't be loud or disruptive, but convicts were allowed to talk quietly in the mess hall, to neighbouring cells, etcetera.
Being related to the Anglin Brothers and listening to their story makes me happy knowing that they won't be forgotten and that they never got violent during their robberies
My father "escaped" from Alcatraz every year sans wetsuit. So do hundreds of others - all one needs is a bit of swimming experience. It's actually not a particularly hard swim. They used to tell prisoners the waters were shark infested (that's what "Tiburon" means), but there are no predators in the Bay. There are no white sharks in the Bay. And no, while some of the swimmers do wear wetsuits, you can't place if you wear one. Most swimmers don't.
I think it would be very cold for them to swim because they almost always swam during the night when the water would cool down. Also, they werent really fed that well so they would have been weak.
@@heyysimone The water doesn't cool down at night any appreciable amount. It doesn't work like that with oceans and bodies as large as the SF bay (this is why pools feel warmer at night). Incidentally, the Escape from Alcatraz rough water swim takes place in the morning, before the sun has had a chance to hit the water. But it wouldn't matter anyway. Water temperatures don't change that fast. Your point about their physical health is a decent one. But the point is, it's not a hard swim for someone who swims regularly.
So I hate to do this but you got some info wrong. The silent system was developed in the 1820's at Auburn state as well as the Chain gang. It lead to prison reform
I went to Alcatraz. It so crazy. And sorta horrifying. I couldn’t imagine staying there. I remember learning the lunch room was the most dangerous because they were given spoons, forks and knives,

I don't remember where I saw it but you can look it up. Edit; I posted this comment before I got to the part where you started talking about the food LOL

Over the years I have watched or read stories about Alcatraz. It is hard to tell how much is fact or fiction. But there is no denying it must have been a terrible place to be. What prison is a good place to stay? Most of those that served time in Alcatraz lived a hard life before they got there. They were better conditioned for that environment than you or me. I am not sure I could have survived any length of time in there. One thing I have read more than once is that Alcatraz used to serve its inmates some of the best meals available. This video alluded to it as well. The idea was a well fed man worked hard and was less aggressive. Hey, whatever works. Do I think the Anglin brothers successfully made it to the main land? No. Not any more than I think DB Cooper survived his jump from the hijacked plane. Both stories have been full of death bed confessions and claims from friends and families; yet no one has offered rock solid proof that the Anglin brothers or Cooper survived their plots.

The “silence at all times” rule is genius!!! 😱 We should do that here!! Think about it, it prevents prisoners from making plans to escape or to attack and they can’t threaten or extort other inmates. Alcatraz should be how every prison in America is today. It was the perfect prison.
It never works in history. It definitely wouldn't today. Tell someone with odd not to talk tell me how that goes. Plus convicts will find a different way to communicate. You seriously can't be that nieve

I think honestly think that rehabilitation is not the point of justice, but Justice, meaning getting what one is due. These inmates were sent there as isolation from other prisons. The rough treatment was nowhere near cruel as sadistic punishment has existed in the past. I'm for the death penalty, but sometimes the unruly can't stay in full solitary, but Alcatraz is a good substitute.
apparently the prisoners could hear the busy city all around them n stuff, probably was torture more than anything hearing life all around them while being locked up do the crime gotta do the time tho!
