Cumberland River fishing below Wolf Creek Dam! (Surprise catch)

- Solo trip to the Cumberland river yielded my first ever brook trout! I knew they were there but never had caught one till today! I couldn’t believe it so I googled brook trout to make sure. Skipjack are plentiful so the big stripers should be here before long!
Nice....I'm from Michigan, I had a friend that lived in Kentucky and had visited an area in eastern Kentucky...of course I brought my fishing pole and caught some Rainbow trout in a mountain stream. I believe they were planted fish, but it shocked me, I didn't know they were there.
The Ky dept of fish and wildlife stock a lot of creeks and streams. I just saw a post the other day were they backpacked in carrying trout to restock a stream in the Red River gorge area. Thanks for watching
@@KennyPattersonFishing I believe it was close to that area , but a few years ago. I guess they have been stocking for years now. The rivers look fantastic for trout! Let's hope they repopulate those rivers and streams!

Was wondering how fishing down there is this time of year, me and a couple friends are heading there to fish in a couple weeks for the first time.
It’s hit or miss right now depending on generation schedule. Best fishing is when they release water 24/7. Forecast calling for rain here all this week so they should be releasing water next couple weeks.
Call the Dam or check TVA app before you go.

@@KennyPattersonFishing def got a ton of rain last week, we’re heading down this coming weekend and the weather is looking nice, hopefully it stays that way. Hoping we can get into something, can always go to the lake if need be.

Set drag were it will slip and when you get hung up go upstream. Get above bait and most the time you can get it back.

If they stop generating is there enough water to safely navigate back to the ramp? Also, when they are generating how hard is it to get a boat back on the trailer? I have been to Kendall ramp twice with a kayak but never imagined doing it with my nee boat. Awesome video!
Once they turn off all generators you got plenty of water at that moment, but it drops quick!!!
Loading a boat is easy cause the ramp is out of the main current.
It's almost like brooks know to stop growing at 14 3/4". Caught plenty that size but not many over 15".

I fish December thru February. You’ll have to call and see what the generation schedule is for that day. (270) 343-0153
You’ll want at least 3 generators and mid 550’s on the water level.
What is the normal water level below Wolf Creek Dam? Would a V-Haul boat work well?
It varies on the generation schedule. I think 542ft is off with no generators running. I like it around 555ft or at least 3 generations on.
V-hull boat should be fine just don’t stand up if you get sideways in the boils.

@Kenny Patterson I appreciate the information. I fish the dams on the Ohio regularly, yet we are not allowed up near the boils on the Ohio stretch. I've seen photos of when Wolf Creek is low and there is a bit of an island that becomes visible.
Yes…right now the ramp is closed due to repairs. So you have to launch at Ray Mann rd. about a mile an half down stream. If they shut off the generators you gotta load up or it gets shallow pretty quick.
Do you remember what the discharge was?
Not exactly… 555-560ft elevation range
Guessing 5 or 6 generators

Like to fish that sometime is it deep below the Dam right now
It all depends on the outflow of how many generators they are running. 6 generators total so water level can vary from 3ft to 20ft. Call the info line at: (270) 343-0153 to get generation schedule.
I like the river level at 555-560ft and at least 3-4 generators running.
