The weapons are far from WWII stock, FN FAL automatic battle rifles are very different than the bolt action Lee Enfield SMLEs from WWII. The sad thing here is that the army in this video is better equipped than the defence forces of today with a two ship navy, air force of propeller trainers and army without tanks.
Because the Irish army was completely ill equipped for combat with the British army and would have been defeated very quickly, with a likely British invasion of the Republic in response

In 1972 the defences forces were marginally better than they had been in 1942 and wouldn't made it 100 yards across the border without having suffered heavy casualties and made the situation worse for catholics in the North.
