  • The ‪@TailfinCycling‬ AeroPack is the brand's spin on the traditional seat pack. While it might look complex, it’s actually a rather simple system that offers unmatched stability compared to other cargo options in the category. In this video, Neil shares his thoughts on the AeroPack, how it achieves its stability, the install process, how it rides, and more…

      I'm very happy with my Tailfin, but I think the arch length is still a problem. It seems to be ok for some large road bikes with a high top tube, but other than that, the arch seems just too long. This puts the aeropack up higher to the seat, impacting dropper post ability. It also puts the aeropack futher back than it needs to be. Tailfin have so many options for attaching the rack to different bikes, I do think a different length arch should also be one of them. A shorter arch than current, could still be made to fit larger bikes by a longer QR bracket, which already bolts on to the bottom of the arch.
      My aeropack seat clamp came undone while riding recently and the gravel rash wore a hole in the bag material. I put my aeropack on carefully, but it must have been my mistake. Tailfin helpdesk suggested some Tenacious Tape, and that seemed to work well as a patch. I was quite surprised though that when I repaired this hole, I also noticed a lot of other holes by looking inside the dark bag in a strong light. Clearly I've given it a hard time somehow, despite trying to be careful with it.
      The aeropack is expensive, but it is very well engineered and manufactured. It just works.

      @@PMcKay00 Hi Peter, thanks for your message.
      Firstly, agree that in time we could launch some different sized arches to give an wider range of compatibility. It’s on the horizon once we’ve launched other upcoming products.
      I’m sorry - you had an issue you an issue with seatpost clamp. I wonder if maybe the secondary locking mechanism didn’t engage somehow? If you think there are some issues with the bag it’s aged excessively quickly then please get back in touch and mention this comment.

      Just bought mine after seeing many Tailfin on Pan Celtic Race in July 23. I’m 100% convinced from my usage so far that this is way better than the Apidura seat post bags I have used for many years. Wish I’d known about it earlier !! The only extra I would like to see is a stiff plastic insert at bottom to the bag (sport kit bags have them) to avoid any potential damage to the bottom of the bag itself.
      I’ve shown my set up & recommended the Tailfin to 3 riders who have each bought an aeropack ☺️👍🏻

    I've had my (carbon) aeropack for two years, bikepacking mostly on rough-as singletrack here in New Zealand. I too was anxious about hinged things and fail points. Other than losing those annoying plastic bushings (now solved with a drop of super glue), I've had no failures at all. Before the Tailfin, using Tubus Logo rack and either Ortlieb backpacking panniers or a Sealine dry bag, I regularly had bags fall off and would lose a bolt or a nut every few days. One other thing I've noticed is much less wear on the frame compared both to my previous systems or my son's conventional seat pack

    Had the alloy rack (removable trunk bag) version with pannier mounts since last year and love it. I use the trunk bag for fast/fun day-rides and overnighters and the Tailfin panniers for bigger rides, commuting or ride-leading where I'm carrying larger first aid packs and other support gear. Being able to remove the rack in seconds and swap in a road wheelset also means I can convert to club-run mode in less than a minute. Not cheap but beautifully designed & made and by far the most versatile system around

    Although I haven't used my tailfin ( Carbon Rack & AP20 trunk bag) on my mountain bike yet, I've done a fair ammount of 100k commutes with it on my road bike. I absolutely love it!
    The whole thing is rock solid and a joy to use. It's really given me new found freedom hauling all my stuff, without the sore shoulders and sweaty back I used to get with my rucksack.
    Initially I struggled with shelling out so much money but I haven't looked back. Well worth every penny.

    I used one of these on recent multi day road trip in Scotland and it was ace, it was totally waterproof in some pretty atrocious weather. I opted for the separate rack & trunk bag, the rack was bolted to mount points on the frame with a drop of loctite on the threads. This was the right choice for me as it meant I could easily unclip the trunk and take it into B&B, clipping back on was easy as well. If you want easy access to the trunk whilst its on the bed I'd recommend getting the extender so the bag is not stuck under the saddle.

    I have the Tailfin system plus their designated mini panniers on both my commute cum gravel bike and my adventure/bikepacking bike and they are bombproof. By far the best system on the market, seat bags are a nightmare difficult to access gear, to mount and all that unnecessary movement, this system eliminates all that.
    You can even get extensions for the Pannier mounts, so I can fit my Ortlieb Gravel bags if I want a different option or more capacity.
    The quality and construction is awesome....buy one and you will never go back.

    I've been using a tailfin AP20 trunk bag and carbon arch with long top stay as my commuter and bike packing set up for a year. Basically an aeropack but the rack and pack are separate It's been dry in all weathers including pissing rain, super easy to use and durable. Nothing has broken and I haven't been nice to it. I use it on my daily commuter with a 12x142 rear and my plus MTB with 12x148 rear boost using the same thru axle with just a spacer, since they have the same thread pitch. The arch and rack clear a 29x3 plus tire without issue.
    It is so stable that when it's not chocked full of stuff I'll often kick it when I dismount because I forgot it was there.
    True it was expensive, but IMHO it read worth it and I will keep buying bits for it to keep it compatible with all my rides.

    I just sprung $725 for the alloy rack with the 20L aeropack plus 2 10L panniers plus the light attachment. I had to gulp at the price but this design stands so far above the other options that I couldn't settle for anything else. Part of the appeal is the versatility. It gives me 40L of packing space for longer sojourns or I can ditch the side panniers for a mere overnight or two jaunt. I really don't like huge side panniers bulging out from the side. This unit is so streamlined, elegant and solid. Kudos to the Tailfin folks for creating a product so attractive that I parted with way more money than I planned to shed.

    I have the carbon version with removable bag for some time now. I have the rack mounted almost 100% of the time and add the bag when out for a ride. It is so stable it acts like one with the bike, no delayed movement (mass inertia) which makes the rides awesome. I have lost one rubber bushing but the spare was send almost immediately. That's the only issue I have had in 24 months, oh wait almost 3 years. The moving parts also help with the flex of the frame to still have the comfort. I can really say I like it very much. I use it for my daily rides als storage for (rain) jacket and spares (tube inner tube tools and lock) with room to spare for some groceries. As bonus it helps with keeping back dry in the rain ;-) I can really say it's worth the money.

    This looks like bikepacking evolves back to traditional touring. I went on my first tour in the last millenium and I have taken so much stuff out in the wild. I know I am old, but despite of that I started loving bikepacking. Bikepacking with light stuff on a light bike, its really fun! If more stuff is on the road I use a bike with Tubus titanium rack with a platform on it. A friend of mine made a platform to take some weight and stabilize the bag thats on it, because the tubus rack is really narrow. With the Tubus titanium its so light and the price was half of that Taifin rack, I paid 200Euro for it. And it looks and seems rocksolid and nothing can fall apart. My choice is clear, because I do not trust straps that show how weak they are.

    • @The2808erik
      @The2808erik ปีที่แล้ว

      If you buy the Tubus Airy Rack plus a quality bag you are almost at the price of the tailfin system. Sure you could use a dry bag on top of a rack, but its no where near as elegant or convenient as the tailfin system, neither is it as versatile you would need a bike with eyelets. The tailfin can be adapted almost an bike. If you only own one bike a specific solution for that bike is probably better and more cost effective.

      @@The2808erik If you own only one bike without eyelits you are right, there has to be a solution but what would I put on such a bike🤔? a special small bag? Panniers? A rack? I would not. Elegance is always a matter of taste, by the way for me the Titan Airy is "purism" and functional beauty. And there is no problem with bags of all kinds, neither with my really old hard back Vaude Waterproofs from 1998 😄(I am so old) nor with softer bags because the Tubus construction supports really really well. A special bag from tailfin or now Panniers on the tailfin? With weight? On long rides over weeks or month? Tailfin specific bags... Who spends so much money could and should ask for more. The tubus airy is really narow and only a drybag on top is not the perfect solution without extra work. I d not know if its called trunkbag, but these are more beautyful and there are different and affordable bags that need a wider platform that the Airy offers, that can be put on with some handyman work. Instead of a drybag I would prefer a large saddlebag...no rack required. If there are no eyelits, I have bikes without eyelits and they are on duty with other, smaller bags. Tailfin solves problems that have never existed at a high pricepoint. 🙋🏼‍♀️Liebe Grüße aber der Tailfin Gepäckträger scheint mir sinnlos zu sein.

      @@kaffeemitcola6506 What I mean by elegance and efficiency is the fact you can access the contends of the bag easily during the day and it's easy to pack.
      A rack with a dry bag is much more faffing around when packing and especially if you need something from the bag during the day. The Tubus airy is nice, but it's only a solution for 1 Bike and decathlon has a 10€ rack with a similar weight if you want to go that route. For me the tailfin is perfect I can swap it to any of my bikes carbon road bike , full suspension mountain bike, hardtail or gravel bike it doesn't matter. This feature alone makes the extra cost worth while. Tailfins panier system is better than Ortlieb or Vaude as well. It does not rattle and is much simpler. When I make a desion to go on a journey I use my bike for journeys and it has a fixed rack and I would not swap it out to a tailfin rack. I am not convinced of that tailfin stuff. The example here might work well compared to a long saddlebag with heavy stuff in it that dangles around. But its a special small bag that needs a special rack. Panniers: I really question if the tailfin system is better than Ortlieb or Vaude bags because they are very universal and addaptable and have a really long lifespan. The small mounting area of the panniers of the tailfin is like a pivot wich always means a high load on material and stress. It has to prove its quality throuout the years and if someone thinks its his part, thats OK. I am pretty sure that riders who go on tours for weeks and months will not use this. And usually carbon stuff disappears after a couple of years by different reasons but that is another topic. A 10Euro Decathlon rack? • @LeoInterHyenaem
    @LeoInterHyenaem ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love it. I love everything TailFin. They're the nest in most of they do - and are up there with the best in some the things they produce. Two caveats, though: 1. They're just too expensive. 2. Some batches and some iterations of some of their products have issues (i.e., too much resin and not enough fibre in some of the racks; the Super Lightweight panniers are extremely prone to tears; the top strut retaining clips will invariably detach and be lost (this has now been redesigned, but I'm a bit sceptical of the rubber o-rings (that replace said clips) ability to withstand torsional forces with the panniers mounted; the rubber spacers for the axle clamp tend to detach as well when removing the rack).
    But even so, I can't stress enough: as of today, no manufacturers' products quite match the elegance of a bikepacking or cycle touring carriage system as TailFin (idem, the Route Werks for handlebar luggage, despite the couple of flaws of their own). The TailFin pannier mounting mechanism beats all of the competition, as do their elegant and relatively light carbon racks and the AP20 / AeroPack. They're top-notch in almost every way. And their 27kg total load capacity even exceeds (if by a hair!) the Tubus Airy's, while matching the aesthetic of a carbon bike much better.

      You just take the whole rack and aeropack off via the quick releases when you want to move it. It's very quick and easy to do and the whole thing folds away to take very minimal space.
      If you really want to leave the arch on the bike then they make a version where the bag and rack are separate. Personally I'm very happy with my Aeropack.

      Having just ridden 550km on extremely rough trails with a tailfin set up, I’d never swap it out for a conventional rack for this kind of riding again. It’s so rock solid and easy to access and fit to the bike, whereas racks always seem to have sway and more bulk. It’s really decent.
