    Mounting it directly to the thru axle(custom, provided by Tailfin) is probably one of the best design elements of the Tailfin rack. Really nice and both mounting and removing it from the bike takes seconds.

    Loctite is intended to be used without grease on the threads and it allows you to remove nuts/bolts after it's applied similar to a thread lubricant. Assuming that you're using the blue medium strength stuff. For threads that are for things that are prone to siezing don't use grease - use anti-seize (messy and notorious for staining clothes but it doesn't turn to dried out crust like grease does). Instead of getting precut abrasion resistant tape specifically marketed for bikes buy a roll of helicopter tape. It's the same stuff without the extra surcharge that many bike products are notorious for such as degreasers, grease or polish. Helicopter tape is easy enough to cut with good scissors and doesn't damage paint when removing or leave sticky messy residue.

    Tailfin's FAQ's give lots of guidance on the rack vs. aero pack. It was plain that my most important factor was being able to remove the bag.

  • @ducatipaso1386

    Intresing bag. I'd buy the quick release model if u need if you need to remove often. Constantly removing/installing the bolts will strip threads out of the aluminum seat stay inserts. The post clamp on the model reviewed is for ez fitting across different diameters, not Q/R.

    As a TailFin X owner (and a Tubus Airy, too) - I highly recommend the TailFin. It is the currently the finest carrier system there is - and I don't see how it can be surpassed. Nick and his team put Tubus, RackTime, BlackBurn, TorTec, Ortlieb, Vaude, Carradice, Brooks, Thule, Arkel and everyone else instantly to shame with the T, then outdid themselves the X. The finest, the most elegant, the hippest, the lowest-tolerance, most tactile, the most technical carrier system I, a long-time Tubus, RackTime & FreeLoad user, have ever used or come across at all. If you can afford it - and have a bike to match (i.e., a beautiful carbon or titanium rig) - go for it! If it's beyond your budget - go for something like the Tubus Airy and a pair of Vaude packs.

    Just FYI, if you are interested in a better solution to protect your frame where the rack mounts, you can usually find some thin nylon washers at you local hardware store. I've always used these when mounting fenders or racks to all of my frames, inlcuding Titanium, with great success. Another tip you might find helpful. Boeshield T9 is great for keeping your hardware (bolts, attachments, etc...) from corroding. I give my bike a wipe down with it (avoid the brakes/pads/rotors) every time it gets washed, including spokes/nipples/hubs, and all of my mount bolts (stem, bottles, fenders, racks etc...). I wouldn't bother with the spray canf, as the nozzles tend to clog. Get the drip bottle and drip it onto the bolts, and dampen a microfiber cloth with it for the larger surfaces like frames and wheels. Don't overdo it. It doesn't need to be applied heavy. Just a very thin layer. Wipe off any excess and preferably let it dry over night to avoid dust collecting on it. It will keep things from corroding, and easier to clean when it does get muddy. Boeing invented the stuff to protect aircraft. Good enough for them, it's good enough for me. =)

    These guys would appear to have a wonderfull product. We live in NZ and went to website to purchase. The prices were in $NZ and we were then charged in $Aus. When we complained no acknowledgement or apology. We cancelled the transaction and were refunded 3.5% less than we paid. Beware the FX rates charged are extortionate.

    Thanks for this vid ! I'm really interested in this product (but the version separate bag/rackpack and thru-axle mounted) cause I don't have eyelets on my carbon frame (Orbea Terra). In order to make light bike packing (3-5 days, as UK cyclists say : "credit card touring" : staying at hotel). I'm terrified by the movement a saddle bag has... (I don't know the word in English... you know, left/right like flappy sausage)...
    BUT my question is : how big is it really ? I have a Carradry 11L (could resist to everything, but heavy and it is full quickly despite the size) and I want bigger.

      I'll be honest the rack bolt mount protection probably isn't necessary. I'm thinking nylon washers would do a better job and be overall cleaner.

    Question - How's the AeroPack working with your laptop? I have the AeroPack X Carbon but can't really get my 13" laptop (in a protective sleeve) to fit, so I just ordered the extended seatpost connector to get a little more room. Still not sure it will work, but willing to give it a try.

    • @bikepackinglight1829
      @bikepackinglight1829  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'd say it's just OK, it took a few days of break-in for the aeropack to become a little less stiff and is getting easier over time. I don't fill the bag up to full capacity while carrying the laptop, and I agree that it probably won't fit with a protective sleeve. After a few weeks commuting, I'm a tad worried about the long term durability, especially the sharp corners of the laptop tend to stress the bag a bit. In honesty, it takes a bit of fiddling to get the right fit, the I put my change of clothes at the bottom and try to get the laptop as horizontal as possible. I tried doing the same with other seatpacks, impossible. All that said, this is the most aerodynamic way to carry a laptop so it is worth it for me. GCN wind tunnel tested seatpacks to confirm: th-cam.com/video/wdfB5fbVHck/w-d-xo.html

    • @bikepackinglight1829
      @bikepackinglight1829  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you crash, yea it's not going to end well. I risked it for over a year and nothing bad happened, then lockdowns hit and wasn't really commuting anymore. A protective sleeve probably wouldn't fit well, the large sized panniers also available from Tailfin are better for something like that.

    Besides the laptop struggle, would you recommend this product still? Any new thoughts since making the video? I'm looking to leave it mounted semi permanent to my bike and wondering if it looks silly unpacked?

    • @bikepackinglight1829
      @bikepackinglight1829  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Charles, I would still highly recommend this product, especially when compared to other seatpacks, this is by far the best I've used. My only other thought since making the video is the seat clamp makes it harder to mount the bike on my repair stand. I think that is another reason to try out the extended seatpost connector, which would likely solve that problem. In terms of looking silly, I think that is highly subjective. Compared to regular seatpacks that become a flaccid sausage casing when empty, the aeropack is totally fine when nothing is packed in it. The compression straps are versatile and can be connected parallel or crossed over like an "X". When nothing is in it, I deploy the straps in the X configuration and the pack compresses down quite compact causing no flapping or other annoyances. If you regularly ride without a load, you might consider the rack version, which gives you a tad more versatility. I personally like having the carry capacity at all times, and leave it permanently connected to my frame. I get lots of compliments on this pack, so that tells me it doesn't look all that dorky. Hope this helps out! I'll post another video soon incorporating any other observations.

      Change the currency on the website to GBP and pay by credit card. Your CC company will pay using the current exchange rate which I found is a lot cheaper than using the USD option on their website. I have a feeling they set their USD prices back when they started and the Pound was much stronger against the US dollar and have never adjusted it to the current market.

    Great Product, but horrible instructions... Why? Because they don't come with any instructions! So if you're installing one for the first time, be ready to spend a few hours of frustration and thinking the whole time they sent you the wrong model cause it will not fit. Only to start discovering there are threaded holes that are not visible until you look very very carefully which is a problem that can easily be avoided if it came with simple, god damn instructions... I know I know, look on TH-cam. But here's the deal, while they are assembling they don't point out these little details, like the hidden tiny threaded holes that make a FREAKING BIG DIFFERENCE. SO PLEASE PUT INSTRUCTIONS!!!!
    Again, great product, BUT.
