    Tips from someone who rides an XS bike: Custom frame bag. Mine is from bike-bag UK. Excellent quality, decent price, and quick turnaround. I have an apidura 3 litre hydration bladder in mine, and can fit a few small bits around it, like spare tubes. Tools are in a tool bottle that fits into a bottle cage on my downtube. In my aeropack goes my tent (packed in a compression sack), poles, small towel, stove, toiletries, and some food. One spare set of kit in one 5 litre pannier, sleeping clothes in the other (including packaway down jacket). And my sleep set in the handlebar bag, with more food in the accessory pouch. Phone, first aid kit, charging cables and battery pack go in a hip pack. Rain jacket on top of the aeropack as I want to get to it quickly. If you're going with someone else, split stuff that you can share: ie one person takes a stove, another person takes toiletries, another person takes a first aid kit, someone else takes a tool kit.

      Yea I’ll definitely consider a custom frame bag at some point, but there’s a chance I might change the gravel bike for a better one in the next year, so would do that before getting a custom bag. The thing I love about the Tailfin setup is I can switch is across all my bikes…
      If you watch my videos from Islay and Jura you’ll see my setup I used was different to this trip

    8 Mins in, not enough room you say, go for 22L pannier for longer trips. You can get roll in extentions to your tailfin packs if you dont want to pay the prices of the tailfin (although i think they are worth it for the stability of the bottom clamp) That said your packing what a 20litre topback plus 2x10 = 40 litres, then spotted you had some kind of handlebar bag so guessing 10 litres there. My point is for 50 litres you should easily be able to camp out for a few days. I would seriously look at kit your taking and be ruthless. What i dont understand though is when im just running the top truck bag, i put the tent bag ontop of the bag itself and use the compression straps - its going nowhere, this should free you up alot of room. Also make sure you have the long extension for the frame pack if not, this shifts the whole bag away from the sadle allowing great height to the bag.
    The sad thing is for bikepacking is that camping is bulky, so its really then investing in ultralightweight gear which comes at a premium, say rab mythic sleeping bags or Sea to Summit Spark 3 (this weighs 650grams and compresses so small for the warmth). Should be no reason why can't go for front cargo packs on the front fork and helps with weight distribution either. I use mine for cooking stuff. The other option and cheap is to wear a backbag for all the really light but bulky stuff (i dont like it personally plus if really windy its not the safest).
    Look at Cooking options, go minimal, ie work out how much water you need to boil for meals and brews, take the gas to do that + 30% as a contingency. Use say a MSR pocket stove they way like 30 or 40grams and super small, super realiable. Would recommend there titan kettle also as the stove and canister will fit inside it. Look at a the camp solo pot setups for one with bowl/cup, some good options there also.
    Sleeping, this depends on time of year - but for me and not being in my 20s anymore i need an inflatable mattress, sleep is important for safety but also long term on trips for health. Thermorest neo air xtherm for winter, thin foil highlander mat also i like, good sleeping bag as above. You will struggle in winter if using a synthetic bag for space, or even 3 season for that matter. In Summer thermorest neo, and superlight bag, sometime just a silk liner or the spark 0 i tend to throw in. As for the thermorest neoair alot lower r values than the xtherm but will do mid spring to mid autumn. Having a good pad under you means you can get away with a lower bag, or even a quilt. Weight/pack/comfort second to none, plus good customer service. They are realiable, avoid expeds, crap warranty and weak seems.
    Other option is then looking at gear to go for a hooped bivy, they pack down to nothing, outdoor research make some decent ones, then could use a rab sil ponchotarp to create a simple tarp weights like 200grams using the bike as the top anchor point, its also pretty handy as a poncho when having a break and its in the proverbial peeing down. i swear by them for bikepacking trips, to be able to get out of the rain and have a break without being wet through makes a difference, poncho tarp takes literally 1 min to put up anchor at handlebars. On longer trips like you i prefer the benefits of a tent, so i use a Hilleberg Enan, and it packs in the Apidura handlebar bar bag really well along with sleep mat. If im going ultra remote and long periods when i will not have the comfort of knowing the weather i take the soulo, or in Winter if in Scandinavia or Alpine areas. The only problem is as you want things better/smaller/lighter yet with same or better performance it gets expensive really fast, more so in last 5 years prices have gone depressingly nuts on most things, esp outdoor gear, looks like the price hikes we had for covid re supply and deman never went back down! Look's a nice wee camp you had there.

      @connormcc  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Wow, thanks for the reply! This is all really helpful - I know that if and when I do more bikepacking trips I will need to invest in the lightweight packable gear, I just can't justify the cost of it right now.
      I also am generally a spring/summer camper, not a winter camper so don't need the super warm stuff (yet)
      I do plan to get fork bags for the front at some point, and I have the extended for the rear tailfin.
      Thanks again for all the pointers!

    • @_Mountain_Dave
      @_Mountain_Dave 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@connormcc Yea no worries certainly avoiding the Scottish winter makes it easier for sure gear and cost wise. Then again you can have a nice spring day followed by minus whatever so yea no guarantees.
      The cost of certain gear in the post covid world is sickening, its like all climbing/mountaineering/cycling and general camping gear as gone through the roof. We had that year where no one went abroad so supply demand prices shot up, never came down now they carry on. Its rediculous tent's i bought less than 10 years ago at £500 mark with BMC or MTA discounts are now close to or in some cases over a grand, literally insanity. But yea i actually subsequently to this watched your other video on your kit list. Defo the sleeping bag out of anything i would advise on that is going to be your biggest space saver by far, literally top end 1/3 of size for same warmth when compressed, or more "reasonable" cost for half the size. The cheaper option, works just as good is to get a really, and i mean really good quaility dry sack (not an ultralight one, but like one designed for kayaking, sea to summit do some decents ones and strap this ontop of the trunk bag, can even extend the straps if required, this will give you alot more space for alot lower cost. I'd hazard a guess that bag is prob around 1/4 of your space if not more.
      One other more cost affordable option if want bigger panniers, and dont want to spend £250 (nuts but there we have it) on 2 panniers, is to buy the extension screws from tailfin, they screw into the end of the rack where your 10 litre bag clips and make it a normal 10mm diameter rack that pretty much any third party bag will work with. They are £35, usual high end quality as with all tailfin stuff (whilst they are super expensive i've yet to find a better rear rack or bags to be fair - including Iceland and Alaskan trips, to hot desert rides and the worst of all, scotish ice rain and sleet ;-) ). Im sure though someone will have an even cheaper solution re getting some normal bolts etc but yea Tailfin do an official option (and safe).
      Stay safe on the roads and hope you get out soon again, spring is on the way for sure!

      Yea, unfortunately the keeping the prices high has resulted in a number of retailers going under (like Wiggle, and Chain Reaction) which is a shame.
      I'm going to review your comments again soon, as I have a few bikepacking trips planned this year - 1 is by road bike, staying in hostels etc, and then another couple that will probably be camping adventures.

    Did you find that you wish you had gotten the removable trunk bag version of the rack? I am torn about this and think it would be convenient to be able to pop it off say on a train where they hang it overnight to a destination etc. BTW with regards to your packing question, at the moment I dont have the tailfin yet but I do use a salsa cradle with a dry bag on the handlebar and I think its similar in size to your mini pannier. I have my tent, footprint, sleeping bag and a down blanket all in there. Works great. The trick is to get ultra light gear that with compression sacks to minimize size and weight. Its a tradeoff sometimes tho. But I used my nemo kayu in Montana in October and the low was 29F and I was warm. What I struggle with is sliding off the pad so may switch to something with straps unless I can find a way to strap my current nemo gear I really like.

    • @connormcc
      @connormcc  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I didn’t realise there was a quickly removable version! I feel like I have missed a trick here, but too expensive to swap out now… although I’m going to go check mine now in case I’m missing something obvious…
      Yea the ultralight packable stuff is the way to go for sure, but it’s really pricey is the only problem, and I don’t bike pack enough to justify a lot of it
