- Fela Kuti, born as Olufela Ransome Kuti was a Nigerian music maestro and the pioneer of Afrobeat.
"Faces of Africa" brings you the story of one of Africa's music legends and his influence through music.
The fact that I, an Irishman 🇮🇪 living in Mexico 🇲🇽 , has loved the music of Fela since I first came across Afrobeat in the late 1990s (while I was living in Italy 🇮🇹 !) speaks to me about universality of music.
Fela Kuti should be as well known and appreciated as Bob Marley or James Brown. Shakara oloje!

Ex 65% of modern Nigerian afrobeats have saxophone jazz. This is purely influenced by Fela. (Fêla was a saxophonist jazz player) apart from the fact that many modern Nigeriian artist still sample fêla in their tracks, Fela is thier revered icon and source of inspiration. I advice y’all to promote your highlife and fight for your own success.

I am still wondering why people always refer to Fela as just the father of afrobeat. He just like Bob Marley being the king of reggae is the king of afrobeat. It's about time we give him his due credit.
Father, in Africa terms well, king might be proper but I think founder will be more appropriate for him.
Father or founder is appropriate for Fela, as he was a creator of his own genre of music. A king does not necessarily create anything.

In LUV immediately. When I returned to NYC, I purchased all of his CD’s. Sadly, not much changed in Nigeria. I know , because I have a friend that live in Nigeria. Also, I watch and read the Nigerian news. The narrator forgot to mention FELA was influenced by African American music.
You can hear the African American influence within the music especially when they’re playing the saxophone and trumpet.

Specifically, James Brown on the music side, and on the philosophical side, an African-Americans lady I can't remember her name. She was the one that told him he shouldn't be trying to sound western. Fela went back home and came up with something more original. The lady even returned to Nigeria with him, and lived with him for a while.

Thanks. I send my warm greetings to the Kuti's and Fela's fans. I appreciate the Pope and other Spiritual leaders whom Fela used to pass a germaine message to us. He was a gift to us. Virtually, all he talked about, is still a reality till date. His distractors focused on his vices, to portray him as a trouble marker and a man that rants. Fela, was a man of conviction, visioner and philosopher. His conviction virtue can be seen, when he opted to study Music instead of Medicine that is parents wanted. He was loved by several women because, he was real.
