- Niniola, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Davido: In dance clubs around the world, musicians from Africa are stars. And no wonder - Afrobeats, which pairs West African musical elements with hip-hop, dancehall or house music, is great to dance to.
For the music industry, the global trend from Africa is rapidly turning into a goldmine - while amplifying the continent's cultural identity.
Initially completely apolitical, some Afrobeats artists have started to use their popularity to take a stand. After scandals involving police violence in Nigeria, for example, musicians defended the victims.
This film takes us on the road with notable Afrobeats artists. We visit their musical homeland, Nigeria, and also Kenya, where East African musical offshoots are forming.

The Afro Best scene came a long way, and I'm old enough to remember when DJ EDU from BBC used to blaze tunes back in 2002. He put me up on Wizkid and Sakodie and I been hooked ever since.

I’m a 58 year old man of Caribbean background who recently started to watch music videos again, I love music so I have proper set up with large TV.. subs proper hifi speakers. So I’ve been streaming through TH-cam. I did start the listening in my car, but never new what most of the artistes look like. Anyway let me get the point. To me these new artiste have a sound that I find enjoyable, Fela had a lot of Jazz influence I know Jazz was very big in his day. The music now has Jamaican influences of Ragga and Bashment , plus RNB soul and hip hop The difference African artiste are more refreshing to me, Jamaicans descend from Nigerians and Ghanaians and other Africans so the similarities are there. To me these young artiste give me pleasure everyday, I come home from work. The videos are works of art, I have background in media and have produced myself. African music videos have excelled beyond recognition. Big up to all the young lions and lionesses. We have to be careful not to see our present stars. 50 years time people will have other legends who have passed., It’s a exciting time for Africa music.

Twenty years ago, I had a DVD of a Nigerian-made movie about a young orphaned woman who survived day-by-day, living in the forest by herself. The village people called her a witch. As poor as the acting was, the story was a good one and I still remember it. It gave me a fresh respect for Nigerians.

The underlying narrative from the West must always be that Africa is a poor continent, but I am yet to see German music dominating the airwaves worldwide. Africa, by the way, is the world’s most richly blessed continent, the table from which much of the rest of the world has feasted for centuries. It is the continent with the world’s youngest population and is therefore, by definition, the continent of the future. Making a global impact with our music and our culture is just the beginning.

I am proud to have been a part of many people promoting the Afro beats. I got hooked in 2009 during the Psquare era with songs like Ifunanya, then came Yori yori with brackets, Flavor with Ashawo. To me these were the Legends of that decade. Then we came to the last decade where new African stars were born, Sauti sol, Wizkid, Burna boy, Davido, Skales, Timaya, Diamond platnumz, Mejja-okwonkwo, Harmonize, Tekno, Simi, Tiwa, Yemi, Octo and so many more. Today we have fresh superstars doing the most, the likes of Nikita Kering, Sol generation, Omah lay, Joe boy, Ayyar starr, Rema and many many young people who are setting even higher standards. Afro beats is a lifestyle. and its in safe hands. Am a proud fan forever!

When talking of Afrobeats, we can't fail to give credit to Congolese instrumental beats as well.
South Africans and Congolese showed us the way, Nigerians held the light up

Afrobeat is not a real genre, there is a show that's on Bbc and they play African Music, they have been those different genres Beats from Africa ( Afrobeat).
That Afrobeats Nigerians are claiming to be theirs came from Ghana. The original genre is call Highlife.
Fela Kuti came to Ghana to learn the beat and take it back to Nigeria and add a couple of things. He didn't even name the thing.

At the very least it's taken from a different perspective for once. Over here in Europe we normally don't hear a lot about African music. People here only tend to focus on what Africa doesn't have which is a shame.

I don’t know much about Davido, is he is based and grew up in America maybe that how you describe him. Because where ever you live has a impact on you culturally. Eg The Nigerian Actor in Star Wars forgotten his name. He is often described as a British Nigerian. We can get uptight these naming, but we can also chill and stop picking holes because it’s a Western documentary. Maybe you right about locations shot, but I guess they love the narrative of rags to riches are they find it interesting how poor people use their talents. We don’t know the factors why some of the superstate were not present. Maybe it was hard to schedule them or they didn’t have any interest.. The doc was great for me..

The narrative of rags to riches distorts the history of Afrobeats, Fela who popularized afrobeats was from an affluent background, he was an elite. Afrobeats is for everyone, they clearly did not do any research, which is shamefully. Davido was born in the US but was raised in Nigeria, literally all his life.

In as much as I like the subject of this doc. I also think the producers should have used someone close to Nigerian culture as narrator. It sucks whenever I hear Nigerian names been mispronounced by Caucasians who wouldn't make an effort to say our local names properly. I couldn't even see it to the end.

@@connys.a2412 While I would gladly teach whoever cares to learn, I would add that the crux of this matter is for the media to become culturally sensitive and aware. Too often in the industry we find great stories like this narrated by someone who cannot pronounce African names. I learn everyday to be better at knowing other people's culture-to be able to say names properly, appreciate their food, how they dress and all that because not doing it right can be perceived as rude.
If that is the biggest problem you have, its a great world.

I'm old Chicago house DJ from back in the beginning days. I watched Steve Dahl blow up Disco records, 1979. Next day at De La Salle it was the big joke amongst some "privilege kids". Destroying a rich struggle in expression & joy amongst people of color was being oppressed yet AGAIN! Thats when I dedicated myself to house music. Now, our collaboration of Filipino, Black & Hispanic home brewed house music has made it home to motherland Africa. Afrobeats is our "second home" for house music, but the ancient past & struggles of African slaves have globalized it. So excited when I heard this music for the first time. Now, that Bitcoin & Block-chain technology has come out artist can be compensated fairly & justly for their creativity.

@@Bill325 You are absolutely right, Afro House gained its popularity in early/mid 2000's when SA producers were making their own version of House also other countries like Angola followed, Afro House also gained popularity in the UK because of some similarities to UK & deep House. West African region was never really into that kind style of music until very recently in the last few years and still doesn't have a large audience.

Great documentary
I have watched this whole documentary. Thank you DW for highlighting African music and Afrobeats in particular. However, I feel that you never really gone into how Afrobeats went global and what has made it global. There are many recent achievements that could have been mentioned. Even the fact that some Nigerian Afrobeats acts are at the moment holding record breaking and successful tours in America or even winning Grammy awards.
You could have also spoken to more artists (especially in Ghana while you were there) and music producers. The latter are the hit makers. The producer in studio with Skales is Krizbeatz there is no specific mention of his name and role in pushing the genre yet these are the engineers of Africa’s biggest Afrobeats tunes.
You could also inserted relevant songs to the topic in the documentary as some inserted like Niniola’s is Afro House / R&B music and even Skales’ inserted video clip is Amapiano sound - veering off topic. Yet Skales is a great Afrobeats artist and could actually be asked better questions as to the Genre’s development and some other artists who paved the way for him.
I also loved Octopizzo’s interview on point but the rest of the clips should have been another documentary all together. They weren’t relevant to the documentary. You could have tried to get more industry professionals to talk about the genre or it’s influence across Africa.
Your Ghana interview with Eazi was great and important, because he’s one of the Afrobeats stars from Nigeria who has kept a very close relationship with Ghana for many years. In fact at some point people outside Africa thought he was Ghanaian. However, you should have also spoken to other Ghanaian stars on the genre and industry.
I hope that you can do more research to make proper documentaries on African music. I am a music publicist and journalist based in Africa.

My exact thoughts. Couldn't agree more. It is important to highlight that Africa is a whole continent with a mixture of sounds which we all take influence, drive creativity and inspiration from. The sound entails but not limited to, taking beats from south Africa, add a Ghanaian dance touch, and a najia tone to make the tune.
We acknowledge feats of the najia music industry but it is important to highlight that the culture is hugely diverse and each sound from specific parts of the continent contribute to the whole genre of afro-beats we have today. Hope such research is taken into account not to give an "unseasoned" narrative.

O.J.Ekemode, who formed The Nigerian All Stars Band (and preceeded by the late Master Babatende Olatunji!)

I think Amapiano from ZA has a lot of potential to be more widely recognized, even out of Africa. It's poetic and experimental but also perfect for clubs.

No offense but Amapiano is very limited to SA. Afrobeat isn't exclusively Nigerian, you have Sauti sol from Kenya doing it, Diamond platnumz TZ, Meddy from Rwanda.. R2bees from Ghana etc. But Amapiano has no capability of moving out of SA it's exclusive. In fact Amapiano isn't new at all, just the name has changed, few yrs ago we had DJ maphorisa & the likes of mafikizolo doing their thing, but still it didn't go past SA. Today the only thing popular about Amapiano are the dance moves because Africans generally love dancing, besides that one can hardly mention a single amapiano artist. It's more of a DJ feel good mix than a Genre.
