Great explanation brotha. I love how you recall past conclusions in your beginning stages of trading. I also felt like moving averages were useless for some time but now use them sometimes just to keep me grounded and make sure I'm not losing sight of the context of where the price is on the chart.

Thank you Rayner. I have been "pulling my flowers and keeping the weeds" per Ed Seykota. Just now learning the techniques for running my winners and cutting my losers. Several very good uses for the moving averages in your lesson. Setting stops using 50-100 day moving averages should frustrate the "stop hunters" and keep us in good trends. Keep up the good work.

I tend to treat the moving averages as support or resistance. And each market tends to respect different period for the exponential moving average. You gave some examples of markets that were respecting their 50 period EMA. What I found is that observing the separation between a faster EMA period and a slower one, you can make predictions about when it is moving away from the slow EMA and when it is coming back to test it. At that point when the two lines meet, it may bounce off of it or it may overshoot by 1 TA. At this point it makes a decision about whether to reverse, which is the same behavior we observe at other types of support and resistance (for example, from price structure).
I agree, structure takes precedence over EMA, but I treat it just like I would any other kind of support and resistance. Returning to the EMA line and seeing a continuation is so much more common and reliable than trying to guess how far away the current price will move from its EMA on a strong trend.

thats basic bro..EMA takes into consideration the recent prices thus it can help in avoiding the spikes that SMA doesnt consider
SMA is not a good choice, compared to EMA, since a big price can effect the SMA value twice, very badly. Once this price enters the SMA and once it goes out of SMA calculation.

the relative strength , more away from moving average goes against the concept of mean revert and trading from an area of value.

Its a different strategie, when you trade relative strenth (#momentumtrading), you are more short term and have a tighter stop loss than the person who trades the mean revert who usually have a more long term or patient approch

EMA lags less imo
EMA is more responsive to price and trend changes (upside). it is more prone to false signals (downside)

I am confused about the strength measure. You said “stronger stocks break higher and stay up longer”. I agree. But isn’t buying the stronger stock against the “entering from an area of value” i.e. close to the MA?
In his examples the stocks broke higher and began consolidating at the higher price. I think once you see the consolidation you are safe to enter, but you shouldn't enter immediately after the sudden spike up or down. Not 100% sure, but that is what I took from it.
More often then not. Once you see a big spike in price, you missed the move unless theres some kind of massive news influence like the current beer bug
