    Saved another camera from getting sent out! There's something super liberating about, "well, it's already broken, worst I can do is break it more" that leads me to try fixing things I'd never have dreamed of touching. Thank you!

    We used to do this on Olympus OM-77's and 88's, and the IS-cameras as well, but here's a little trick: Some vertical travel shutter blades are plastic. We would re-orient them as you show, but then put the camera face down with the injured shutter curtains showing, then put a desk lamp with a 60W incandescent bulb facing them about 6-8 inches away for 5-10 minutes. This will relax the blades, making them flatter. Be careful though -- we melted a couple of plastic bodies that way! That required a TBR -- "Total Body Replacement", where we would lift off the serial number and move it to a replacement body!

    This worked on a Konica TC that I picked-up from Goodwill for $8. The shutter looked like it had been poked through with a finger. I used a combination of the modified tweezers and a bamboo skewer. Works perfectly now. Interesting note is that the shutter blades on this particular Konica are pretty thick and required more force to get them back into place than I anticipated.
    Thanks!

      Great to hear of your success. This procedure will work on any vertical type bladed focal plane shutter as long as the blades are not to severely buckled.

    Fantastic, I had a Pentax MZ-50 camera in the shed with a buckled shutter and after seeing your video I got it out and with a Q-tip (yes, a Q-tip) flattened, bent and cut down the middle I was able to re-align the blades, it now has a roll of FP-4+ ready for action, thanks again.

    Thank you so much for that. I’m having an issue with a Nikon FG, where the shutter blades won’t come down from the top shutter frame. I got it to come down a few times, seems like a bunch of junk was caked inside the shutter blade track, and along the top and bottom of the track. From trying to see if it worked on it’s own a few times by pressing the shutter and film advance it got stuck back up again after 10 or so times. Any suggestions?

      Marco Hahn Hi, sorry so late to respond. The track on the shutter blades were all Gunked up with some kind of debris and gooey stuff. I just kept working it out with a small dentist tool (careful not to scratch the blades or ruin the track or using a tooth pick. I used a lot of 90% alcohol to clear out most of what ever it was that kept the blades from retracting properly ( sometimes the alcohol was better than any tool because it ate up what was in the way of the blades)
      Hope that helps

Thanks

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There might be a film of oil on the second curtain shutter blades causing them to stick... or mechanical damage to the blades... or a mechanical malfunction. However if the shutter works properly in the M90 setting, than the issue is an electronic failure.

    I have an olympus om2n that isn't right.
    Basically the shutter just fires at the same speed(around 1/60th sec) no matter what you set it on and sometimes sticks.
    New batteries. Ive tested it to death altering things over and over, over about a 1 week period altering this and that and its improved from being only firing on B to mostly firing when the shutters pressed but its still not right.
    Every single speed it fires on is the exact same.
    The lightmeter seems to work but the connection to alter shutter speed doesnt seem to work on manual or auto.
    I suspect the PCB has gone. Any ideas?

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      As you suspect the issue could be a circuit issue or a faulty component, most likely an IC. However there are a couple of other possibilities. If the shutter speeds are fast in both auto and manual, Then go ahead and remove the mirror box base cover plate. The felt strips along the sides of the cover plate will probably also need to be removed to facilitate the cover plate removal. A ceramic circuit will be revealed. The switch (SW101) sets to front of the board on the wind lever side, check it for positive contact before release. If good, check the wiper of variable resistor (VR-102) closest to this switch. Clean around this area. Between the wiper of VR-102 and battery negative should be at least one volt. If this all checks out... bad IC.

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try to give the shutter a gentle encouraging nudge to the end of the travel position to see if the mirror drops and completes the shutter cycle. Use gentle pressure only, if force is required then stop and reevaluate.

    • @anducure
      @anducure 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes we do that every time the shutter stuck. and then works a few shots more, and then stuck again, It is very uncomfortable when the film is inside.

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      anducure You have not indicated what type of camera you have. Probably a Minolta XG series, as they are prone to that type of shutter malfunction. The shutter curtain tension could possible be increased so there is more pressure at the end of the shutter cycle. If it is an XG you will find two gears under the bottom cover positioned side by side on the rewind side of the camera. They are identifiable by the ratchet stops that allow for the gear tension to be set and held.

      The Casio RF-1 has a metal shutter probably made by Cosina. It would not have shutter tension gears as described in the Minolta XG. There could be oil residue on the blades that could be causing drag. Short of complete disassembly and proper servicing of the shutter there is not much that can be done. You can try spot cleaning the blades with isopropyl alcohol and a judicious application of powder graphite as an emergency fix.

    Could I send you my camera to fix. It doesn't have this problem. It's a Kodak VR35 ektanar and it just doesn't work.
