  • Uneven exposure or jammed wind mechanism on a Canon FTB or TLB. This video shows how to access and repair the shutter braking mechanism when it is causing the shutter to bounce or has jammed the wind mechanism due to a displaced brake pad.

    Thank you for the demonstration of how to repair shutter brake pad dislocation causing shutter bounce in a Canon TLB camera. In the early seventies my Canon FTb developed shutter bounce. I had it repaired by Canon.

      Thanks for your comment. Do you still have the camera?

    • @merlinmarquardt
      @merlinmarquardt 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I wish I did. After I had it repaired, I sold it along with four lenses, 50mm, 100mm, 135mm, and 200mm. Recently, in an attempt to recreate my affection for this camera, I have acquired four used Canon film cameras, an AE-1 Program, an A-1, and two T50's. I must admit I was somewhat reluctant to buy another Canon film camera after the issue with the shutter bounce with the FTb, but I guess it could happen to anyone. I do like the Canon film cameras that use the FD lenses.

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, that is too bad, but the cameras you just acquired should be fun. Hopefully the T-50s won't give you any trouble.

      Thanks for your comment. What are potential problems with T50's?

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They stop winding or become sluggish. Also do not store the T50 with the batteries in the compartment as the AA battery is prone to corrode, as you probably have experienced.

    I'm looking for a way to clean the viewfinder of an old Canon FTb, as it seems to have two lines of dirt across it. I checked the whole think, I'm almost certain it must be in there, but unsure how to open it and clean it.

    Hello. Thank you for your excellent guides. I recently received an FTb which seems to have a shutter problem. The person who gave it to me said the mirror was stuck in the up position, but this doesn't seem to be the problem. The mirror comes down when the camera is wound, but when fired, the mirror rises and the shutter opens, but the curtain doesn't close. Would the problem have to do with the second curtain not moving? Might it be a straightforward problem to fix?

    Thanks for this video. One on my leather brake is gone. Im looking to replace it. How thin is it ?

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      .5mm to .8mm soft leather... a piece of old driving glove might work. There is a little wiggle room on the thickness as the tension on the adjustment screw will accommodate.

    Is the shutter speed and ASA speed the same for other film cameras? I have to remove the top cover of a Konica Autoreflex T4 and I don’t want to mess anything up.

    Hello, I found your page while trying to troubleshoot a problem with my canon ftb. My specific problem is not addressed in any of the videos and was hoping you could help. When I use the advance lever it appears that it is also taking a picture. The shutter button is always jammed / inoperable. I took a video of this but am not sure how to share it with you. Thanks in advance for any solutions.

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Make sure the self timer is not engaged and jammed. Also, with the bottom cover removed, check the notched gear stack with the two opposing levers mounted on it. This is the area most likely causing the release to be stuck in the down stroke position.

    Hi again F.O.C. Do you know if the other early Canon "F" series have this brake pad, FX-1964, FP-1965, Pellix-1965, FTQL-1966, Pellix-QL-1966, TL-1968, EF-1973, TX-1975 and the FTBn-1973 and the F-1 series? Another tip, Cross point screws can be easily started by turning the screw slightly counterclockwise, when you hear the screw "click" then turn clockwise and 99% of the time it will catch the threads and start easily.

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good tip on the starting of crosspoint screws. LOL... after starting hundreds maybe thousands of screws... starting them so becomes an inherent inclination. As far as your list of cameras... without checking parts manuals... memory serves that they all nearly identical except the F-1. The F-1 uses opening and closing curtain brake bands and pads, but they are a bit more difficult to access.

    Hello! I recently started to experiment some issues with my Canon F1 New and I wonder if you could help me on that! What happend is that at different shutter speeds, the images appear overexposed with the shape of the curtain, I mean , it is similar as shooting with a flash with no shutter syncro. At the images (just with some shutter speeds) you can cleary see the shutter curtain realeasing by steps. Thank you David!

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like your camera has shutter travel curtain and latch issues. The disassembly needed might be beyond a kitchen table repair. And there are no FOC videos feature the "new" or last model of the Canon F-1.

    Hi again. Please clear up something for me. I use Pliobond as a contact cement. That is (in this case) one puts a thin film of glue on the leather brake pad. Then a thin film of glue on the brake arm. Then after about 20 minutes the glue sets up and once the pad is pressed against the arm it's a permanent bond.

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In this application it is best to put a thin film of glue on both surfaces and let them get tacky (only takes a few minutes). In this condition it allows for positioning of the pad and will set very strong. The ability to give a good bond when only tacky is what makes Pliobond superior to other contact type cements in classic camera repair applications.

    I have a Canon TX with a jammed wind lever, your other tutorial led me here. As I was opening my camera, I found that the secondary retainer set screws are pushed down, I don´t know how to explaint it, looks like someone opened it a long time ago and screwed these tiny guys with a machine or something. Do you know any other way I can remove that retainer so I can fix the camera?

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Worst case... drill them out. OUCH. Hope it does not come to that. Surely with the proper sized screwdriver you will be able to back them out. Try applying some heat from the tip of a soldering before give them a go.

    I've got an FTb whose shutter will slow down on longer shutter speeds such as 1sec and even pause for a moment as if it gets stuck. Does it need to be cleaned and lubricated or is there somthing more serious going on? Higher shutter speeds work fine. Thanks!
    P. S, thanks for making so many great videos!

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are on the right track in your thinking. The slow speed escapement will need to be accessed and addressed. It is a bit difficult to remove as it is located under the mirror box, so the front plate has to be removed. However you might get some results by simply removing the two screws holding the bottom cover plate of the mirror box and flushing escapement with alcohol. DO NOT allow the alcohol to flow down and come in contact with the viewfinder screen. Try to contain the alcohol to the area of the slow speed escapement. At best, the flushing might be long term temporary. Ideal repair would be the removal and service of the slow speed escapement.

    Hello! Love the channel. Very usefull videos.
    I was wondering one thing as i just bought a canon ftb: by shutter bounce do you mean that the mirror bounces or it has to do with the lense itself?

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What shutter bounce causes is uneven exposure and refers to the action of the shutter curtains.

    Great help - but I tried to remove the counter mechanism on 2 x Ftb (Ftb and Ftbn) and it won’t ‘lift out’ as shown in the video.
    I can’t get the mechanism off the shaft… it lifts up about 1/4 inch but stops there…
    Any help appreciated

      There’s a retainer on top of the mechanism. You can use a thin screwdriver or blade to lift it up and work it off first.
