Holy shit. I've had this camera sitting on my shelf for 3-4 years, and I thought it was broken. It worked! Update: I've since dropped and broken the camera halfway through my first roll. I guess it was never meant to be used.
I just bought one from a fb marketplace ad, same problem but putting a battery in didn’t fix the problem, no battery check light either. Good thing the lot had an x700 in it too
Just bought an XG-1 from a vintage seller near me, and assumed it broken when the film advance lever was jammed. Ordering new batteries now, fingers crossed! Thank you for such a concise + informative video!!
I bought it thinking it was broken, the guy who sold it to me thought it was broken and sold it to me for $ 20 with the 50mm and a 70 210. Thanks for the good news.
I discovered this back in 1994 when I decided to take photography class in high school and needed a camera. Knowing my parents had an XG9 in their closet they claimed was broke, I changed the batteries and ta-da it worked. I then went on to use that camera for years, even winning a couple photo awards with it. I kind of miss that camera. At some point it got a light leak and I decided to take it apart to check out how it worked. I believe I still have the pentaprism somewhere as a keepsake. Sadly my folks had bought the camera the year I was born but only used it for a handful of years before the batteries died and they thought it was broke. So I have a couple of really good photos from when I was a kid with shallow DOF and then the rest after that were all point and shoot camera photos. Kind of wonder what kind of photos they would have gotten had they knew to change the batteries. I actually ended up with friend's old XG1 several years ago. And a couple bad Focal lenses. I haven't used it but it looks in decent shape. It does need some batteries. Maybe I should pick up a Rokkor lens and some batteries for it. It's just hard to spend the money on that kind of thing these days when I've got a perfectly good Nikon FE with a few lens already if I want to shoot film.
My XG-1 camera has a very stiff power switch and nothing in it works even tho I have the battery. I wanted to get it fixed myself so I don’t have to spend even more money for someone else to look at it for 5 minutes. The shutter button does nothing and the film advance lever gets stuck. Please help
Thank you for making this video! I got the XG-9 from an antique shop and after trying to test the shutter I assumed that it was just broken, but thanks to your video I checked it again and it just doesn’t have a battery!!
I have a PORST OC Compact Reflex that has the same issue. I clean it all and I'll buy the batteries and try. Thank you for saving me some time, great video!
I had a similar problem, and cleaned the battery contacts which got the batteries to work again. I've now got the lightmeter and battery check working, and I got the shutter to fire...only problem now is the winding mechanism is jammed still? Any help with this would be much appreciated thanks!
hey I have the same issue and I did read the manual, and was wondering if that's the reason, how ever I changed batteries to two LR44, measured them a bit above 1.55V, slightly, lever still stucked, would you say I need to try with SR44 first and then try mechanical issues ?
What do you think might be the issue if you change the batteries and the red light comes on when switching to BC to check batteries, but the advance film lever is still not turning?
this helped me aim a beginner in film camera and my dumb self didnt even know that it had a battery. I checked the battery and lo and behold it didnt have one hahah thanks
Same thing occurred with a used OM-2N I bought at a thrift store, I wanted the lens(A pristine 50mm macro) and told them the camera was broken because I didn't know better. I decided to futz with the camera and soon found out it needed batteries to operate, the OLY's have reset buttons as well, but it ended up being the nicest old Olympus body I have.
Hello! i recently got a minolta x-700. I don’t know when it stopped being used. My advance lever is stuck! The curtain looks good. I put new batteries in and the led lights inside the screen work. Everything seems to be working fine expect a beeping noise that prevents me from pressing the shutter + the advance lever. What should i do?
Thank you for your time & effort. I have a Minolta XG-M and have just run through my first film a Fuji 400 colour film. I am trying to rewind it. It seems I just need to hit the rewind button underneath. Beautiful camera! I love the feel and motion and viewfinder. It is telling me that inside a normally lit room with front light on the subject at 50mm f1.7 it needs 1/30th of a second...? But I am thinking that it is trying to render 'mid grey' as if it was a sunny day. It seems to compensate for the speed of the film... I really need f8 because I have multiple subjects at which it says I need 1/4 second which is not possible hand held... so I compensated for the fact that I am inside by dropping the stop compensation down 2 full stops at which point it allowed me to shoot at 1/30th to 1/60th of a second... am I thinking right or do I need a flash unit hand held?
after finding an XG-9 at my local thrift store, this threw me for a bit of a loop at first. That way I got a fully working XG-9 for only 15€ because the thrift store's technician wasn't aware of the camera being battery dependent and thought it was dead
my film counter stays above S... meaning it won't advance when I advance the film. The advance lever is stuck after each take, but works normally again after a minute or two. Not sure if it's a battery issue...
I used 2 new lr44 batteries and the light meter and Red light works but the lever is still stuck, do i change the batteries or is this a different problem?
That sounds like a capacitor failure. Also a simple fix, but it does require opening the camera up and replacing (soldering) a capacitor which is known to be prone to failure.
Did anyone else find a different solution? I changed the batteries to fresh ones and mine's still stuck. :( Battery Check works and when you turn it on it lights up inside but other than that, nothing.
Hi i just ordered new bateries and film hoping this would fix my issue but my level still seems to be stuck. It lights up and battery check light comes on but lever still stuck any other fixes would be helpful
Have you ever fixed any frame counter issues where the counter doesn't reset to S when the back is open? Mine just goes back to the 20s when i open the back.
Had hoped this would fix my XG-1! It didn’t unfortunately… Advance lever is stuck. BC turns on, when I flick between off and on, the light meter will react in A or the camera will show M in manual mode. Selftimer runs up to about 8 sec then nothing. After each shutter button press, I need to flick the power wheel. Any clue what’s going on here?
Welp, wish I would've found this video before forcing the lever outwards on the XG-1 that I got less than 2 hours ago. Even looking through the manual didn't explain why forcing it was a bad idea. My Pentax SP doesn't need batteries for the film advance lever so I figured this older camera wouldn't.
Why the hell would you put that much force into some delicate like a shutter advance? It clearly stops you must’ve pushed hard on it to break it. Jesus you are a brute lol
I have a question, i recently got an x700 and i got new batteries for it and I was able to shoot a whole roll of film no problem but then all of a sudden it stopped working and all it did was flash the the letters in the view finder for like a sec then then stop. I bought new batteries for it twice now but i notice that the battery end cap had a brown stain or something on the metal plate in there, i was wondering if that just meant that the current wouldn't flow anymore and the cap doesn't work anymore or if it's the camera itself?
Hey, i have this same problem but with a Minolta Hi- Matic 11 super circuit 3. I was testing it and it suddenly stuck. Dont know what to do. Will appreciate any help!
Hi, the Hi Matic 11 will operate without a battery (although will not meter or expose properly) as it is a mechanical shutter so if you are having an issue with the advance being stuck, you have a mechanical problem with the camera.
Hi I have the same camera and I added new batteries but the light won’t turn on. The only time it does turn on is on B.C but only if I hold it the light turns on what can I do?
Carefully check that the battery cover is free from corrosion. It may not be visible, but a thin film of corrosion can prevent the batteries from powering the camera. Clean it with a fiberglass brush or perhaps a pencil eraser.
What about if my lever won’t wind the part that rolls the film in? I’m new to film photography and I got a XG-A and I’ve shot a couple rolls already but my little brother was messing with it and now the lever won’t rotate the cylinder that rolls the film in, anyone have any tips or advice I’m desperate 😭😭
@@SoftAsButta I never found a fix but I took it in to a place and they fixed it on the spot for me within 15 minutes so it has to be simple, they only charged me $20 if you wanted to do the same!
Sometimes on my XG1 the mirror gets stuck and it releases when shutting it off. Does someone know what the problem is? It’s just sometimes and sometimes the shutter speed is off. Like I said it is sporadically. Hope somebody can halo me out
Hi Bill, I just got a minolta x700 and the advance lever doesn't work and the same with the click shutter. This is a relate problem? If the advance lever get solved would be the shutter solved as well ?... Right now my minolta has LR44G batteries in it.. Would you recommend use SR44 batteries?
Hi, the advance lever cocks the shutter and advances film. So yes, they are related. Either LR44G and SR44 batteries should work. Just make sure they are oriented properly and no corrosion on the battery cap. If all checks OK then you have another problem. Not uncommon to have capacitor issues with the Minolta X series.
Hey I just replaced the old batteries with brand new one specificity the energizer 357 but the lever is still stuck. I hadn’t picked up the camera in a couple months though. Can you help me?
Check that the battery compartment cover is clean, use a fiberglass brush or a pencil eraser. You could have a mechanical issue with the shutter. If the mirror is locked up, the issue may be that the shutter has not completed its travel to release the mirror. If the mirror is down, you may have an electrical issue, would recommend taking the camera to a service center.
okay scratch that now im just having a mirror latched to the top of my camera and wont come down, cant see anything through the viewfinder and cannot adjust aperature on my lens
Can anyone tell me what set the sas dial at and the the knot with it so I can take the top I have to clean the prismthere's a line going across my viewfinder that shows tells me I have to take the prism I don't know what to set the gauge at to take the knob off
when i first got the camera, i had encountered the same problem. however, i just forced the lever to wind all the way back because that would usually happen to my Nikon EM and i assumed i just needed to use a little elbow grease to fix it. now the lever won't return to its usual place unless i use a coin on the bottom. a little feedback?
Sorry to say this but the extra force has damaged the wind mechanism. Parts will need to be replaced and it may not be economically feasible to repair the camera.
Mine won’t release the shutter ... no matter what I do...it’s like the button is just dead... I took off the bottom of the camera and can trip the shutter there... but of coarse that just isn’t gonna work...any ideals???
I have a minolta XG-9 that did the same thing. I figured out that the last click on the arm was just a tiny bit tougher than I expected, and I just had to push the arm a little bit more for it to jump back in place. It hasn't always been like that, so something has definitely gone wrong, but at least it works.
Thank you for the video Bill! It helped me fix my XG7 but I've discovered a different issue and wondering if you have come across it. My camera appears to be "stuck" at the x-sync flash speed, which I think is 1/60. Previously it was stuck at a five or six second shutter. After attaching an x-series flash, the camera shifted to x-sync speed so it's functional, albeit in a limited state. The mechanics are all working flawlessly. Any thoughts on this issue?

Sorry to say this but the extra force has damaged the wind mechanism. Parts will need to be replaced and it may not be economically feasible to repair the camera.
If this didn't fix it, I read that it's a resistor failure. How hard is that issue to deal with?
If you got an answer please let me know
It Worked! - Thanks!
Mine won’t release the shutter ... no matter what I do...it’s like the button is just dead... I took off the bottom of the camera and can trip the shutter there... but of coarse that just isn’t gonna work...any ideals???
Great . Thank you
Hey guys, Would you by any chance have a spare film Advance Lever cap available for a Minolta CLE?
Sorry, we don't have that part nor a source for it.
My winding arm won’t snap back to start. Did I break the spring that returns it?
I have a minolta XG-9 that did the same thing. I figured out that the last click on the arm was just a tiny bit tougher than I expected, and I just had to push the arm a little bit more for it to jump back in place. It hasn't always been like that, so something has definitely gone wrong, but at least it works.
Thank you 👍
Thank you for the video Bill!
Super Helpful!!! Thank you!
