    Today I tought my roll had broken and went into my room with all lights out. To my surprise, it never even got correctly attached to the winder bit on the right side, so when I tough I was rewinding and that it somehow broke, it actually just went fully inside!
    So now I'm left with this bittersweet feeling of having lost 36 moments, but still having an empty roll to try again

    • @thedarkroomukltd7541
      @thedarkroomukltd7541  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you suspect the film is slipping instead of advancing, then you could shut yourself in a dark space, open the camera and manually rewind the film, leaving the original tongue sticking out. That rewound film is now safe. Reload the camera, making sure the take-up-advance is gripping the film. Close up the back and, covering the lens, advance the film 6 or 7 frames. The original ones should be okay and you don't waste the film.

    Hello, sir. A very nice video, however I noticed at 2:13 and 5:57 that you were doing the complete opposite to the film rewind knob as the camera was ready to start shooting. Will this have any effect on how the film rewind knob revolves and how the film advances?

      @@thedarkroomukltd7541 at 2:13, you turned the film rewind knob clockwise (I suppose to tighten the film and take-up the slack?). At 5:57, you turned it counterclockwise. My question is if this difference matters at all in terms of how the film proceeds from one frame to another.

    • @thedarkroomukltd7541
      @thedarkroomukltd7541  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AndreLieberher At 5.57 the rewind lever is still sitting "up" so I simply push it down. Sometimes it needs a slight turn for it to engage with the film inside, so I wasn't turning the film, just making sure the rewind was pushed back down. My point and shoot camera just will not take shots anymore all of a sudden. The shutter release button goes all the way in or either not at all and nothing happens. Any idea on A) how to sort this, B) if it’s worth keeping the film inside or taking it out and throwing it? Some old cameras go on working for ever, some not, but point n shoots relied on fairly cheap mechanical parts. If you can extract the film and get it processed, most labs will only charge you for the prints they can make so... Maybe ask to have the film developed only - just the negs and see if there's anything worth printing/scanning.

    So my film release button is stuck. How do I release it from the spool? I understand it would be in complete darkness... Do I just open up the back cover, slide out the film from the cassette and would the spool spin by itself then? Then just roll it up into aluminum foil?

    • @thedarkroomukltd7541
      @thedarkroomukltd7541  ปีที่แล้ว

      If the film is still attached to the 35mm cassette then it's best to take it out the camera then rewind by hand back into that (in the dark). The film can sometimes detach for the cassette if it is overwound, so then roll it up in tinfoil to keep it light-tight. It's helpful to either include the empty cassette or advise us of what we're going to find inside the foil. Your camera mechanism may well reset itself once the pressure of the tight film is released.

    • @flowinglikethewater
      @flowinglikethewater ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thedarkroomukltd7541 Thanks for your reply. If the release button isn't working, how would I be able to take the film off the spool on the right side without damaging anything?

    • @thedarkroomukltd7541
      @thedarkroomukltd7541  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@flowinglikethewater Difficult to offer cover-all advice from a distance. Often the tightness of the film stops the release from working. Open the camera back in the dark and lift the film off the cogged gear and that might ease the pressure. Once the back is open you should alternatively be able to manually withdraw the film from the take up spool on the right. That spool shouldn't be locked up and will allow this. Then rewind into the cassette by hand.

      hi with some cameras the rewind spool on the left hand side will turn when you advance the film. This would indicate the film is going through the camera and the counter may be broken. If there is no rewind spool go into a darkroom and open the back and check the film is attached properly.

      If the camera really won't open, then you need to gain access to the film in the dark, by any means possible. I'd never suggest breaking a camera, but sometimes there's little choice. Take care in the dark if you're using screwdrivers to lever it open.

      I can't be specific, but the mechanism that resets the counter is usually the door opening, so maybe that's at fault and is something to check out. If you put the camera back to your ear as you advance the film you can often hear it moving, so it might be taking pictures anyway.

      There are a number of SLRs that have electronic shutters and no mechanical option, so yes, if the battery's dead you stop taking photos. Even my beloved Mamiya 6 120 camera does the same, so I carry spares.

      I'm not sure I can help. Do make sure you have pressed that button on the base of the camera before you try to rewind - it's easily missed and will stop it rewinding.

    how do i check if i'm not shooting blanks without exposing my film to light?

    • @thedarkroomukltd7541
      @thedarkroomukltd7541  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you've made sure the film take-up is working when you first load the film, then most cameras will have a film-count indicator. The indicator will only turn if the film is moving. Also the rewind lever will turn as the film is advanced - so there's a couple of clues without having to open the camera. Also there's this th-cam.com/video/nj-RKg995zo/w-d-xo.html

      There are so many variables, I can't really offer any suggestions but you'll know more when the film is developed. Once the film is out of the camera, you should be able to hold it to the light and fire the shutter and hopefully you'll see the shutter is working.

    my film ripped when I tried to roll/spool it back in. I did not know that it wasn't supposed to be exposed to light. eventually I did expose it to light, without knowing, it was my first time ;( I went to the camera store but the man sadly said that it was trash because I exposed it to light. I had made such nice memories, I could cry... I'm just desperate for a solution. Does anyone think that this might get solved? Pleaaseee let there be a positive answer :((

    • @thedarkroomukltd7541
      @thedarkroomukltd7541  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends how much film was inside the original film cassette and how much much was exposed to light. If only half the film was exposed then the rest will be safe inside the cassette. It sounds like the film film was torn at the end so there may not be anything salvageable :(

    Either its operator error on my part or I wound it wrong, but this is the 2nd time it's happened to me so now I at least know what to do with the film and how to save it! Thanks!

    • @thedarkroomukltd7541
      @thedarkroomukltd7541  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There can be a number of causes. Although I'm not a camera technician, I'd check there are no sharp edges on the camera body because that could act as a focal point for a tear. Same thing with the spigotted roller because if it jams, its teeth can do the same. Then of course, make sure you put the film in the right way around ( you'd be surprised how often that is overlooked! ) Advancing the film lever should have the consistent firm/snug tightness all the way through the film.

      Most film cameras have a manual catch/lock to allow the back to open, but different makes of camera have their own fiddly methods - sometimes you have to lift the rewind knob and twist its collar etc. If you need the original manual then this site may be able to help www.butkus.org/chinon/
