- Why suction line diameter is bigger than discharge line diameter in centrifugal pumps?
There are 4 main reasons, that's why keep the pump suction side diameter greater than discharge side.
1) To avoided cavitation
2) For Net positive suction head Available

What happen when pump suction and discharge pipe size same ??
It depends on the process, in some cases it will be ok. If you design pump suction line size as per NPSH then in that case it might be ok,
