I just bought a base Mac mini 2014.. I updated it to Monterey and then I upgraded with an M.2 adapter + a SSD NVMe kingstone and now works pretty good.
What write speed are you getting? I was getting 30MB/s write speed and I upgraded using an SSD NVMe kingstone but with external enclosure connected via USB 3.0. I am now getting read and write around 400MB/s which is a huge difference. I am wondering whether the speed will increase with internal adaptor. Let me know thanks
Not sure why this was on my feed but it cracked me up, well done. Probably because I bought a tricked 2012 Mac Mini (i7 2.6Ghz / 16G RAM / 256G SSD) off eBay for $155 shipped recently and was searching videos on how to download Big Sur from Catalina. It’s connected to a 2011 Thunderbolt 27” Apple Cinema Display (2560x1440), Apple Magic Keyboard and Apple Magic Mouse. Big Sur is running like a champ thanks to the geniuses who created patches to unsupported Mac’s. Having Siri, Live weather, iMessage, latest control center, etc. on this 10 year old Setup is insane. Absolutely love it! After seeing this video, glad I chose the late 2012 model.
I've just updated (without any adaptors) with Sandisk Ssd Plus Sdssda-1t00-g26 1tb. It fits perfectly. Mine is mac mini late 2014. Boot up in 20seconds
20 seconds is better than 20-30 minutes that takes my late 2014 mini to boot up. Once it does then it takes a while for streaming apps to boot up on TOP of that. Plus the computer itself will boot up but all the gd apps take forever. Once I have waited and hassled with it for a half hour or more, then the streaming works quite well. I have it hooked to my 40 inch Smart TV. Not sure Hulu and Apple TV+ use 4K exclusively or not.
I love my late 2014 Mac mini. It’s a maxed out i7. I run windows natively, so graphic designing, I have an EGPU attached to it, I even have a thunderbolt 2 hard drive enclosure and have it connect to feo Thunderbolt displays. I love my setup
Thanks for sharing! You are the second person commented who runs windows on mini 2014. I should give it a try. Monterey is sluggish as hell, so maybe windows will be more swift.
I just bought one of these and at the moment I replaced it with my SATA SSD. It is currently running Sonoma on it and it is a pain. I just now learned about the NVME port so I'm ordering an adapter and will try that. Hopefully it works
I upgrade my mac mini 2014 using Nvme m.2 adaptor. Its fast now. Read and Write speed is limited on mac mini 2014. Its only max between Read: 600MBps to Write: 700MBps. The NVME M.2 ssd I bought when i tested it with my laptop secondary m.2. I got a 2100MBps Read speed and 1700 MBps Write speed. something I just notice too because I dual Boot it. Im running Monterey and windows 11 on my 2014 mac mini,. Monterey is slower, specially when opening apps like microsoft offices. boot time is slower too 20secs sometimes it reach 35 secs to boot. but when opening apps on windows 11, it open immediately. It is way faster to when i tested the read and write speed in windows 11. it almost reach the Read speed: 800Mbps and the write speed of 900MBps. it boot faster too for only 10 secs. That is why Im using windows os now on my 2014 mac mini now.
@@VietPhan no differences at all, because i only do basic task like offices work. zoom meeting, youtube etc. fan noise almost the same with monterey. windows 11 on it is very fast. for example opening microsoft word on monterey for the first time it bounces 7 before opening. sometime it reach 10 counts. after that it open emediately after closing. but in windows 11 it open emediately. Im using office 2021, updated. zoom meeting has many faetures unlock in windows 11 than in monterey. example: Video Blur background.
interesting insight, i will give win 11 a try! At least my Dad wont have to learn new os system. Fotrgot to ask, is your mac mini equipped with 4GB or 8GM RAM? It plays a huge role when it ocmes to running windows smoothly
*sniff* You had me at "this thing is slow as hell". Beautiful. Bought a garbage performance used 2014 myself, and was wondering what was wrong. It had a 'stock' drive maxing out at... 50MB/s for writes and reads.
While slow, still ok for browsing internet. My dad definitely felt improvement over ancient noisy core i3 with no SSD. But yeah I got caught by price overlooking the model specifics
I have a late 2014 iMac with a Thunderbolt 2 port. Wondering if I could connect an external ssd using that port, specifically an nvme drive in a suitable enclosure.
I bought an Apple Mac Mini Model A1347 (Late 2014) Core i7 3.0GHz Dual core. (Not quad core) 16GB RAM 1.12TB Fusion hard drive. (900GB HDD - 112GB SSD) Is that good? Paid $300
This is depressing. Don’t have the $$ for a new computer. Is it as hard or worse to upgrade a PC desktop? Also, has apple stopped upgrading the OS for the 2014 Mini ?
Decided to see if you had any updates after watching your last... It's to bad the adapter didn't work.... May of just been a fluke with dealing with poor quality un branded Chinese parts... Dice roll sometimes... If I buy a 2014 Mac Mini... I still want to install a M.2 SSD because it's the easiest way to upgrade it.. & fastest. But not SUPER fast... I understand these Mac Mini's when doing the M.2 adapter have a max speed of 800mb/s due to hardware from what I remember reading regardless of how good of a M.2 drive you use. But eh that's fine with me... (If it works IF a buy a 2014 Mac Mini & attempt this upgrade)
@@VietPhan 100% true! Honestly all I'd want to do on it is Facebook TH-cam, Netflix and general web searching. I got a very powerful PC for anything else. But really... It's just an old itch I am trying to scratch and I'll likely not end up using it much...
Recently bought a late Mac mini 2014 and I completely regret it… not only is it so slow, apps take forever to load or won’t load at all. I tried to cancel the order before the seller shipped it but I think he knew there was a problem with it, but shipped it anyways so that it’s out of his hands.
taking advantage of the fact that my imac broke, I thought about buying a mac mini that I was offered, 2014 i7 16gb Ram and 512 ssd pcie... would it be a good buy? costs $200
so basically this video is about how you got a bad adapter from Ali express? I think you should try again with a better quality adapter. I'm getting ready to do so right now.
I did my upgrade. Paid about $12 for the adapter off of Amazon and $44 for 1TB PCIe gen 3 NVMe. The limit on the Mac mini 2014 is 750 MB/s. Only problem I ran into was the disk utility on the internet recovery being too old to recognize the NVMe, but had no problem after booting up from a newer OS installation USB drive I made. I'm writing this message on the Mac mini right now lol@@VietPhan
Can I use a NVMe SSD with PCIe 4.0 with this adapter or only PCIe 3.0? I'm searching to buy the SSD Model but this question tricked me here. Can you help me? My mac Mini Late 2014 reads this 4.0 configuration as an exemple 7000 reading and 5500 writing? Or only the 3.0 specifications?
Did you upgraded you mac mini late 2014 with an SSD drive? If yes, with which drive and how fast is speed write test?
Haven’t yet
nope I gave away my 2014 and bought a 2020 M1 Mac mini for $370 on eBAY I'LL UPGRADE TO THE M2 soon

You made a great call with sticking to 2012 model
Very cool. Would that be described as a hack?
I like Monterrey, but I preferred Sierra, which worked really well. Now that I have Monterrey my 2014 started acting klunky

My m2 ssd gives around 670-700 mb/s reding and writing speed. Is it good or I can go much higher ?
Its on the lower average. Fastest are in thousands but you will be limited by type of connection if its usb or sata or...
Did you have 10.13 or later installed before installing NVMe drive? There’s an EFI firmware update needed in order for drive to be recognized.
I did install newest mac os. I still think it is because of a faulty adapter.

have you managed to get 4k 60hz put of the 2014 mac mini? I've tried several cables and adapters, but I only get flashing lights at most

i need ram upgrade :((((
so better to avoid mac mini 2014
Streaming 4K video has nothing to do with the hdd/ssd.
well, there is noticable difference with and without SSD due to slow procesor and swaping cache to hard drive.
