Thank you for this review. I waited so much for DJI action 2 that I wanted to buy it over the Gopro 10. But the form factor bummed me out and then your review about overhearting was enough for me to get the Gopro 10 soon. If DJI is having so much issue in Ireland heat, imagine what it would be if I use it in India where I live 😆
It's a tool for a job - like they all are. It's not an upgrade from the Action 1 - it's something completely different and original. Basically, if you are wanting to get occasional shots where only a tiny easily-mounted (or hidden...) camera will go, and the rest of the time you use it with the screen module, then this is a significant step up from the Go 2 (which I owned and loved until I destroyed it...). I think the Go 2 had worse overheating issues actually. If you don't want the features the Action 2 offers, don't buy it, purchase a normal action camera instead. As for overheating - well, today in Australia I took mine out and wandered the local shopping mall for about 20 minutes with horizon locking on, and with the second screen attached because I wanted the excellent audio it provides. That means 2.7K30. It barely got warm on a single 20 minute clip. Really, in normal use in 'normal' environments where you would expect to use it, it's fine.
Overheating is an issue for both the GoPro Hero 10 AND the DJI Action 2 - Which overheated first? Find out here th-cam.com/video/G6QY_n8g690/w-d-xo.html
This is the same issue with "other" camera when it gets "tested" sitting it on desk. Why not take the "other" camera - then you don't have to worry with keeping up with the bottom half (its going to get lost), if its going to rain or get wet and you don't have to bring a third piece of equipment (case). That's a lot going on just to save a few grams.
Can get fries with that please, sure wanna taste some of that melted cheese, I sent mine back I live in a cold country and mine over heated at 6 mins.well done DJI always wanted a mini outdoor cooker for frying my breakfast on ..
I live in central Florida where summer time gets to 95 degrees F and the winter is still 80 degrees f so how long will it last in those conditions lol..
What about when you use it for extreme sports and smash the screen is it replaceable???if not I can't see how this is a worthy upgrade from the osmo 1 as this is one of the most vital things needed...smashed screen no footage osmo 2 ???
For me its the form factor that turns me off the most. They probably would have similar heat performance to the GoPro if they stuck to the tried and tested design. Its a shame because I waited for this camera to come out, and the actual camera and software I think is better than hero 10.
I think too many people criticized this camera too quickly without really exploring it properly. The external mic possibilities are far superior to the gp10 which still needs a bulky adaptor or media mode.
You already tested this in the real world. When a director yells "Action", he doesn't mean Throw yourself out of a plane to ensure the camera doesn't overheat. Action means "Get going". If darts is as much a sport as rugby is, "action" can be watching a printer print or vlogging, indoors and out. What if you're outdoors in a HOT climate? AND, THAT WAS A WASTE OF CHEESE!
If I get this, I would probabbly use it on my rides like my Action 1. Which means it will need to have the battery module on and sitting in the waterproof case. I wonder how will that go in a country that sits right on the equator.
The waterproof case will melt 😂 seriously that’s a tough one to call. If just recording onto sd card you’ll get something recorded that’s said cameras always struggle in hot climates so it’s not just gonna be this
@@VicBarry So far my Action 1 have not gotten to the point of shutting down or stalling on me from overheating like Gopros, thats why I went with it. Now I'm not too sure if I want to get the Action 2.
Why do you use 24fps instead of 30? Nobody is transferring your videos to film. So it's always going through some frame rate conversion making it look extra janky.
Thanks for the update. By the way I love Ireland. Work there for 5 years and still missing the lovely people there and the beautiful scenery. Cheers mate😊👍🏻
This cam is intended for fpv pilots or fast moving takes. We mount it on a drone so it gets alot of airflow so it wont overheat. Seems perfect for fpv pilots.
Back in the days of film 🎥 my dad shooting Super 8 Kodachrome (ISO 25, 8mm film) movies, each film was just 2 minutes 40 seconds long. Then you had to send it off to Kodak to be processed. Whatever you wanted to make a movie of whether it be a wedding or a holiday, you had to plan very carefully whatever you wanted to shoot. No wasting precious movie film. You could cut the film and join films as part of your edit but with 2 min 40 sec per film it was a limited resource. That made you a very good movie maker. You had to be concise and focused on how you told your story. The year my father got a video tape movie camera was when his movie making skills went out the window. Now he had the luxury of hours of relatively cheap video tape and boy did he use it. His holiday movies became long, bloated and boring. I’ve never forgotten that lesson. Maybe the small onboard memory of the Action 2 might be of benefit to your movie making skills :) Be selective. Be smart and concise.
I'm sure some will like/love it. I will be sticking with the original Osmo. It's fine for my purposes and I love it. This Action 2 (for me) is a little gimmicky for an action camera. Once you add the modules you lose water ingress protection. The camera alone has a short battery life and only around 22 gigs of effective memory. You need to add a module to get the micro sd option. So it's not a great choice for some. Also the screen can't be replaced if it is damaged. The horizon lock is only available in 1080p and not in 4k. There are also overheating issues. It's just messy and overpriced if you go for the screen combo. Whereas the Action 1 was the opposite. Just grab and go. A shame they didn't do an upgraded Osmo with the same body form and release a modular cam as well. But that's prob asking for too much! I hope when my Osmo gives up they might have revisited it or have come up with something better. I don't want to have to buy a Go Pro if I can help it. 🙂
Great stuff thanks Vic I'm like that cheese - slightly torn - dunno whether to go for a DJI Action 1, which I can get for £200 or a new £450 Action 2... its never easy is it! My GoPro5 doesnt have front facing screen, or even sound in sync(!), but I love that you could wear this more easily than an action 1... anyway thanks for the vid
Cheers Neil and a huge thanks for giving me the heads up about the audio issue earlier. Really appreciate it. Thanks pal. The size of the DJI action 2 is definitely something that makes it well worth considering. It’s tiny.
Love it .. well done for taking it to the next level .. and yes .. it gets hot .. but generally it runs out of battery before it shuts down overheating. At least what i've figured out in the last week.
Adding the front screen or battery pack makes it worse. If you let the pack charge the camera the charging gets it red hot without recording. As the pack charges the camera while recording that adds to the heat problem. I have tried filming indoors on a head strap. With pack its about 4 min. Without about 6. But I had to put them in the freezer first. The only setting I had from default was antiflicker. Was filming 1080P at 50Hz to prevent flicker. Only useful in the ski slopes or when below 8C. Piece of junk. Mines going back. Ambient temp was 18C
you just prove my point, like the gopro hero 10, in indoors they get extremely warm, So ??'.... this is an action camera for outdoor use , if you use this outdoor it should be fine, they were made for outdoor use , not for indoor , what not to like in the action 2 , cheaper than the gopro 10 about 100 euros with external battery module , if you need the "front Screen " buy the gopro 10 , but for anyone that needs more battery i think for 400 euros its unbeatable
I think it is more confusion and disappointment caused by DJI's dubious claims. The DJI Osmo Action is a well-liked, capable and inexpensive action camera. The DJI Action 2 was presented as its successor, but this camera is truly NOT a good fit for many current Action owners. In my case, the smaller camera unit and higher frame rates would be a boost for recording marble runs and other toys. On the other hand, my outdoor vlogging in winter weather would be easier with the Action. For now, the price and lack of accessories are putting me off.
I don't think that was a real world test, the Tiger looked fake, one of the kids were seen in two places and i heard there is no wind in Ireland, so it's not real world. But I like it anyway. Keep it up. :-)
White would reflect heat, like from the sun; but it would not help with radiating heat. For the most part, it'd be better with a set of integrated cooling fins, and black..
