➡️ It's been months since I've highlighted a virtuosic jazz bassist, and I couldn't think of anyone better than Mohini Dey to break the dry spell. She released her debut album in August of 2023 and reached out to me about reviewing her music on the channel. I feel terrible that I took so long to make it happen, but it was WELL worth the wait. Analyzing what was happening in her track "Introverted Soul" was a fool's errand, but I enjoyed looking at the song's structure and arrangement to highlight why her music is perfectly composed for a solo-bass effort. I discuss her otherworldly "feel" as she rips bass solos at blistering speeds, her impressive use of dynamic control with a wide variety of bass techniques, how she carefully straddles the spotlight as Guthrie Govan and Gergo Borlai take center stage, and so much more. Holy @#$% guys - go check out her new album linked below! NOW!

Best comment I've seen in a long time 🤣👏🏼
@@LowEndUniversity Mourning does tend to bring people together.
Sounds like an F-Zero or Jet Set Radio track. Very cool!
Wow, not only incredible playing but also incredible song writing. Thank you for introducing me to this!
My pleasure!
Awesome stuff man! Glad you could introduce us to an absolute modern master of the craft. I needed a reminder that I suck at playing bass. Oh well, back to the woodshed...
Her dynamics combined with the melodic genius!
It's too good 😭 And the playfulness omg 🥹
I literally just learned about her like 3 days ago and now you’re making a video about her! So cool!
Incredible album that I first heard about on 4FusionFriday. They loved it, and they pretty much never steer me wrong!
Good morning, Mark! Nice change up with this video.
Great content!! My first time ever hearing her. She’s super impressive.
What a talent! Great analysis too
She caught mark off guard so bad he said “ oh shit” 😂😂 this was a super sick I wasn’t expecting all the cool changes
Holy hell that was great. First time hearing a song from her. Loved that trading section, Guthrie sounds great with her too.
Wow…thank you for introducing me to her insane talent. This track ripped! So many elements to love here, especially the Plini meets Steely Dan vibes
You bet, man! I loved finally hearing this, and many of my revered players on one track. Fun sonic journey!
Wow…just wow 😊
man, I wasn't into this "robot plays bass" music until that filthy breakdown after the string bend with the ring-modulated guitar😂YES!
That’s EXACTLY where it hooked me 😅
Album is insanely good. Bought it the day it was released and it still blows me away.
Really great. I’ll never do it so I can just sit back and enjoy.
Same 😅
Maybe check out The Omnific next? they just dropped an album today and its rad as heck!
I think today's musicians have reached unimaginable skills and techinques so It's hard to pick one or another, but she really stands up with her talent and the joyful way she plays. Great job! ❤
Why pick one or another?
❤
I'm not much of a fusion guy, but it's niice to see you taking a break from all the punk stuff.
The bass tone sounds familiar to me but I can't but my finger on where I heard something similar. Especially the part around 7:40. Now I will spend the rest of the day thinking about this haha
Primus - Les Claypool?
Totally unrelated to that video...can't believe I forgot these guys Mark @lowenduniversity...Neds Atomic Dustbin...2 bass players...lead & rhythm...start with "Grey Cell Green"
& the song "happy"...honestly jus check out the entire God Fodder album from Ned's...double bass genius...
Coming next week! 😉
This track sounds like Mohini and Guthrie are going on a very exciting date together. And the drummer is like the taxi driver bringing them to different places.
Love this!
Not my kind of music at all but man is she stupid talented!! Impressive
This makes me want to listen to Animals as Leaders on the commute to work this morning.
Have you checked out Elephant Gym? KT Chang is fantastic on bass!
You need to review Dianogah. I suggest the song "What is your land mass". Really any of them though. You can't be a bass guy and have a bass review channel without featuring those guys.
Check out john ferrera from consider the source! Tihai for the straight guy is a great song
This reminds me of sonic on dreamcast
please react to Luis Mariutti playing his song Carry On
What about approaching the god of bass playing Jaco Pastorious?
Maybe!
Smooth jazz implies the existence of rough jazz. I have now found proof.
😅
I pick up primus mixed with blues jazz and ska

Its like hearing Billy Sheehan, Steve Vai, Mariah Carey or any of those other virtuoso musicians … fantastic, incredibly impressive, but ultimately, I wouldnt pursue listening to it.
Endless noodling, even when youre supposed to be playing rhythm, as amazing as it is, just gets old, and inevitably the rest of the band, as great as they may be, tend to take a back seat. Unless Guthrie is your producer, then he gets a major section to himself lol but I prefer a cohesive band, where they work together.
Primarily, the reason that I drifted away from truly appreciating virtuosity, is because I listen to music in the car, where my focus needs to be on the road. Its very difficult to stay focused when there’s something else DEMANDING your attention, pulling it away from where it needs to be.
I still listen to some wild music, but it’s like Thrash, Hardcore, early progressive, where there are definite rhythm sections, and solo sections… not constant soloing.
That being said … is it impressive?! You bet! Kudos to her!
Too good isn't she
It sounds like a track for some nintendo game
The outro’s slap bass section reminded me of the Mario Kart 8 theme, in the best way possible.
Mohini is otherwordly, but at times I am overwhelmed by her virtuosity- there is just too much going on. Now, I'd like to recommend a bassist to you- the French band Magma has been in existence for 55 years now and has had some of the greatest European bassists- Francis Moze, Bernard Paganotti, the astonishing Jannik Top and the great Phillipe Bussonnet. Please review this great bass song, written by Jannik but played here by Phillipe- this is not an improvisation, but a thoroughly composed composition: th-cam.com/video/4-3gkIe1oBs/w-d-xo.html
I recognize her talent but this track is really not doing it for me.
I can totally relate to this comment on several other musicians/bands. Not this one, but you make complete sense.
Exactly what I feel about all of her playing. Something I'd technically never accomplish in a hundred years, but also something I'd frantically skip when it came up in the shuffle
Nahhh. It slaps.
I agree. Just isn't what I'm into, but wow.. what a talent. It's fascinating to watch.
Certainly amazing and technically fast but I would never listen to this as a "song" to listen to.
I recommend reacting to Mudshovel by Staind
Why do these jazz fusion bands always have the same tone?
Crazy talented but not personally a fan of jazz fusion. Miles Davis had it right with it being the notes you don’t play. Jazz fusion has all the notes, with another two servings of too many notes on top of it in sections. I’m sure she can kill it in any genre though.
I don't really like these compositions really bro. They are just technical exhibitions. They are irritating and unmusical to be honest.
Crazy to say something isn’t musical when it doesn’t gel with you. Sounds very musical to me. Lots of notes with tons of emotion and expression put into them. Too many notes? There’s only 12 notes in the standard western scale.
This extreme over-notey, hookless, turbocharged drivel is by far the worst kind of music to me. Her fingers move fast - That’s about all I’m left with. Like a fast talker who fails to make a point.
Overrated. She's flashy, but there's no substance. That's why she never wears a shirt.
She probably doesn't even smell Indian.
But she sounds pretty much Indian. All of her techniques are from tabla strokes and konakkol which comes under Indian Classical Music
Girl can play, but you picked this over AVAIL??? Jesus bro!!
