➡️ I've been cruising down the punk rock rabbit hole lately, and it's been a friggin' blast! I wanted to take this moment to reflect on all the new bands and bass players I've discovered, and highlight the TOP 5 punk bass lines I've heard so far. To sweeten the pot, I wanted to take it up a notch and challenge myself to learn each one and cover them as authentically as possible. I enjoyed getting into these players' heads and trying to replicate each of their unique playing styles. Let's count these down, shall we?!

Fishbone - Bonin in the Boneyard (ska)
      And
Rollins Band - Grip (jazz musicians playing hardcore)
      Fun points...
Bonin' in the boneyard- I anticipate the use of the phrase "root note" 😆
Grip - Im not sure if the bassline is repeated. Anywhere outside of the chorus🤣

I love that you chose face to face. They are my favorite band hands down. I really hope that you take the time to check out their entire catalog. I really think that you’re going to be a fan of their what I now consider their best writing “ignorance is bliss” I can admit sadly like a lot of their fans at the time that when it was released I felt betrayed and very upset. Why would my favorite band, a punk rock band, release an album like that? They gave us “don’t turn away” then “big choice” and then the self titled album!! When that self titled album came out it was like finally my favorite band has a great sounding album!!! Then after 3 years of live albums and various releases here comes the next record!!! NOFX, Lagwagon, No Use For a Name and the others all gave us pretty solid records during the tail end of the 90’s and now it’s time for face to face to show them up!!! NOPE!! IIB is NOT what you expected at all. I didn’t want anything to do with that record in 1999.
Fast forward five years and I gave it a second chance. It’s not only one of my favorite face to face records but one of my top 5 records of all time. The production is really really good but the fucking song writing on that bitch!! I was 19/20 when it was originally released not to mention playing in my own face to face inspired punk band at the time. Most likely the two main reasons I reacted the way I did upon its release. Then having matured quite a bit in those previously mentioned five years allowed me to approach that record not as a f2f fan but as a fan of Trever, Scott, Pete and Chad. That record really showed me why f2f is my favorite band. It’s Trever’s voice, Scott bass playing, the guitar tones. In all the previous records those things were there just smashed together at 180bpm in 3mins or less. Ignorance broke that wide open and allowed all those things that made f2f different from all their punk rock brethren to breathe.
That being said I’m glad they’re still putting out that smashed together 180bmp in 3min or less f2f punk rock that we’ve all stuck around for all these years. They just do it really well. They got a formula and a sound that works. Much like Social Distortion, NOFX and Bad Religion. When you hit play on any of their “punk rock” records, you automatically know it’s them within the first few bars.

I guess my buddy gave me the answer: It's the album which is just such an beginning-to-end piece of art and simply gets way more attention, really.
But despite that, I do believe that Axiom is the much superior solo of the two, and if not for playing then for sound. I could listen to it for hours in a loop.

wow, that tapping from #1 reminds me of the stuff I learned from Dave Crigger instructional tape long time ago, and I used it massively later

Can definitely see your pick work is improving, that's some absolutely gnarly stuff. Im glad to see I got the list mostly correct, only miss was Face to face over Cigar. Legacy of the 7 Plies is just a completely different beast.

As soon as I saw the title, I knew you were gonna do the horse. Also, it's crazy how close you can get to most sounds. But, isn't it crazy how you just can't mimic fat Mike? You weren't lying about him. Nobody sounds like Mike.In my opinion, he's one of the best punk bassist of all time, one of the best punk and rock producers of all time, and one of the best lyricist in general of all time. Nice work, homie. That's a pretty neat little gadget. I like it a lot. Much love. Be well.

Always great. I can't imagine the time you had to take to get those riffs down. So complicated.
Some of my favorites are punk-adjacent:
Braid - first day back (1998)
the Coathangers - watch your back (2016)
the Dismemberment Plan - academy award (1997)
gods reflex - to the discontent of all his previous loves (1996)
J Church - yellow, blue and green (1993)

I highly recommend checking out 'THE PRESS CORPSE' by 'ANTI FLAG'. In my opinion one of the best examples of bass playing in all of punkrock. You won't regret. If you think it's worth it, i'm looking forward to see you analysing it in the future maybe.
Great to see people exploring and appreciating good ol punkrock stuff.
Keep up your great work mate!

Great job! Those riffs are so tricky. I would dare say they're kind of beyond punk. Have you listened to crossover? It's basically hardcore bands incorporated thrash. DRI and the like. I dig it.
