It makes me smile to see someone discovering a band I've been loving since high school, some 37 years ago.

One of my favourite albums of all time, also bought this in 81… level 42 are still touring, actually went to see them in Portsmouth last year, still sounding superb….

    Mark King on the slap.
He always hit hard, but live…..even HARDER.
    Superb funky British band.

On the same album, listen to "dune tune". Had this album since new in 81. Was my first ever vinyl album purchase. Still in my top 5. Not everybody knows their early stuff, which is their best material imo 👌

      Spot on!
I first saw them live in 81 and their early stuff while not as commercially successful as what followed from 85 onwards is still my favourites today.

Also "Starchild". "Dune Tune" I always liked. Their albums "Standing In The Light" and "True Colours" are loaded with great song.

Level 42 best band in the world

  • @Allencartercomix

I love that you got your first taste of Level 42. They're a talented, but often under-appreciated band in the music industry. "Something About You" was their biggest US hit, while "Lessons in Love" was their biggest UK hit.
They really excel with their live shows and early instrumental tunes like "43," " Mr. Pink," and "The Pursuit of Accidents.". Their other early material is great too such as: "The Sun Goes Down (Living it Up), "Weave Your Spell," "Hot Water," "Starchild" and much more.
The two vocalists in the band are: Mark King on bass (he usually sings the verses like on Love Games), and Mike Lindup on keyboards (He usually handles the choruses with his amazing falsetto). Sometimes Mike will take the lead on a song like The Sun Goes Down, Starchild, and Weave Your Spell.

I've loved Level 42 since 1985 when I first heard "Something About You" on MTV coming home from high school. Mark King is the reason why I learned to play bass. He's simply phenomenal.

The best band for bass player. Mark King is the Man, playing, singing, and chewin a gum at the same time. The best

Something About You was their biggest hit in the US. Lessons In Love top the charts in other countries. These are the songs that introduced me to Level 42. The bass-lines are dope and the lead vocalist Mark King is the master of bass playing.

i loved it when i was 12 and i still love this song. Its so funky its incredible, like STARCHILD...such good songs of level 42. Later on they went downwards with to much commercial stuff and not real music. Funk and soul was gone. But I remebmer them for their great starting years. fabulous

The bassist is a guy called Mark King, who also happens to be the singer.
Mark is one of those once in a blue moon artist that excels in the bass and with his voice.
There is a video our there that is doing the rounds, and it is Mark playing "Mr Pink"live at Reading....and it will blow your mind, as to how amazing it is!

Love me some L42! Been a fan since a GF took me to a Tina Turner concert in the early 80's and L42 was the opener. TT was great but L42 was awesome and been a big fan ever since. There's a group called Dirty Loops that are equally talented and funky that y'all need to check out. They recently dropped a cover of Thriller (collab with Cory Wong) that is not to be missed. They are managed by Quincy Jones so yes they are that good! Cheers

It was probably 1987 or 1988 because I saw that concert. I saw Level 42 in 1986 opening for Madonna on her "True Blue" tour.

Interesting you should say that. Their 1983 album "Standing In The Light" is almost entirely produced by Larry Dunn and Verdine White from E. W & F :)
The LP included the singles "Living It Up" and "Micro-Kid", worth checking out especially the remixed versions.
