Joe you were respectful and actually perhaps that gentleman was having a really hard time, but my belief was you were absolutely correct in the pursuit of trying to find the specific property he inquired about. I'm befuddled how many people don't seem to grasp the concept that a random home for sale in a general area can be used as a "model home" or generic example to represent many similar listing. That its NOT a scam, rather a tool to lead curios individuals to a page they can then begin to explore the many options in that area. I'm a huge fan of Shawn's and would ONLY be disappointed in his reaction if he corroborated this story, as I won't judge from 1 POV. Regardless If this real estate broker is telling the truth, I give mad respect when a man can humble himself and make a course correction lifting up a potential friend rather than develop a foe and nurse your own pride. As a prior Real estate professional, I feel like you could have much more easily narrowed down the house without pissing him off, you kept going back to the idea of asking him this routine set of questions. But rather, you could have cut to the chase on this occasion, asked for some identifying features, not sure how those listings were formatted, bit they probably had address or listing number, number of beds, baths, garage, and other features. Obviously it's on the water, that's a great way to narrow down a few. It just seems you were too focused on asking him for permission to start down a long list of qualifying questions rather than just identifying the property, of which he's right, you should have known more about. Or, if you can see which homes he viewed details on, just ask him to wait or give a call back so that you can investigate further. I would have been annoying with the asking me over and over if you can ask some questions rather than just hearing what's the most important question you can ask me to get straight to the point about identifying the house i saw. Simple.
Perfect example of exactly what not to do on a sales call. We've all burned opps. Some more costly than others. Good to see you learned something positive from that experience!
