The mother in the song is the mother in the story of "the Wall," who is overly and toxically protective and helps him build a "wall" around himself for him to hide in. She's just "Another Brick in the Wall."

Mother represents mother, man. She clips your wings while trying to keep you safe. His father died in the war. Single parent home. It’s a very direct contemplation, a conversation with his mother in his mind.

In this case mother is an overbearing overprotective mother! The catalyst for the whole thing is that Pink, who Rodger Waters is portraying was 6 months old when his father was killed in world War II. This actually happened to Rodger Waters, the Lyricist for Pink Floyd. Additionally, the lyrics "mama will put all of her fears into you," "mother will make all of your nightmares come true". This she does in order to keep her son home as long as possible throughout his life! Then the lyric "she won't let you fly but she might let you sing" just shows more of the overprotectiveness and being overbearing. So in a nutshell the husband dies in the war causing the mother to become overprotective causing the son to become introverted and not able to deal with the real world!! Finally "why did it have to be so high"? Meaning the metaphorical wall that was built around him by mother that caused all the future issues!
So actually you couldn't be more wrong implying this song is saying mother is loving and caring!

Th e last line refers to the fact that she was so overbearing and protective of him that he was asking how high is he gonna need to build this wall to protect him from the fear-filled world she would like him to stay in; cozy and warm with mom..Mother, did it need to be so high..meaning the metaphorical wall we build to protect ourselves

  • @Gregoryismnz

To me the last line , " Mother did it need to be so high" means the wall around himself he and his mother made

The whole album is about the inner wall that one can build to keep the bad stuff out and as a consequence keeping one's feelings in. So mom is probably rather literal in this case.

  • @flubblert
    @flubblert 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

Earlier in the song mama says "of course mama's gonna help build the wall" right before they go into the solo.
The wall here is the metaphorical wall Pink is building in his mind to blockout reality and all the pain that comes with. His mother being part of that pain. The last line refers to his mother's contribution to the wall. Turns out it was significant. "Mother did it need to be so high"?

Roger´s mother was left alone when his father was killed in WW2,,,It seems she believed she had to mother and father and was overbearing in Rogers's mind, This album The Wall is about Rogers (Pinnk´s feeling of isolation and unable to relate easily to other human beings, A feeling of separation, Alone even with others around him, A wall..

the whole "the wall" album is a complete therapy session.
Pink, the main character in "the wall" album builds a mental wall from society.
"why did it have to be so high" is in reference to that wall.

If you want some deep dive into The Wall, Virgin Rock's channel is presented by a classically trained Harpist. Amy is doing a phenomenal breakdown of the whole album, song by song. This breakdown includes a 'first listen' vlog followed up by an 'in-depth analysis'. I've been reading the comments following her analysis' and I find that not only is Amy unbelievably perceptive of what is going on in The Wall, but incredibly astute in reading and teasing out the music's feel and design elements. Her insights and comments on the album have helped many long time listeners of PF find new and exciting elements and characteristics to the music and lyrics that they were previously unaware of. I strongly implore you to work through her series on this fantastic album. As a therapist I think you too will find it extremely interesting and engaging on how well she is able to express the ideas in the music of this work.

The Wall is a rock opera that tells continuous story, so many of the songs rely on references to previous songs. I suggest listening to the album from start to finish.
This song is just a small part of a larger narrative that is told throughout The Wall. In it, this character named Pink is gradually driven into insanity. A wall is used as a metaphor for the mental block that prevents him from communicating with the outside world in a healthy way. His father's death, abuse in school, and drugs all contribute to this wall.
While Mother may have had good intentions, she is overprotective (probably as a result of his father's death) and doesn't expose Pink to the outside world at all. This makes him much more defensive and vulnerable to the outside world, which escalates into something much worse as the story continues.

Gilmore is the virtuoso of using the major and minor cords in these solo arrangements...he and waters were so for ahead of their time, that you truly have to be at a certain maturity level in order to comprehend this gift of messaging...

This is from a concept album, so to understand fully you need to listen to all the songs in order and it tells the full story - and given that it follows a person, named "Pink" through his life from childhood to becoming a rock star to having a complete mental collapse and ending in a catatonic state and then through to him trying to pull himself out of it all - it makes a perfect album for a channel that is promoting mental health. A couple years after the concept album they created a movie that does a great job of conveying the story too - it adds visuals to the music to help make it all clearer.

The Wall is about a damaged man who builds a psychological wall between himself and society. Each brick in the wall is from some traumatic event in his life (father killed in war, overprotective mother, brutalizing teachers, cheating wife, hiding in shelters during bombing raids, etc.). His mother helps facilitate his separation from humanity by helping him build the wall.

Watching your reaction you were wondering where the song was going, i thought, based on how the song ended. It's important to know that "Mother" is one part of, not just the whole album, The Wall, (which might as well have been a soundtrack), but part of the movie that defines it all, the movie "Pink Floyd The Wall",

"Mother did it need to be so high." It's "the Wall", the psychological, social protective wall his mother started building so high around him. It's mentioned twice in the first verse and it's the name of the album. I'm perplexed at how many reactions think it means the mother was stoned all the time, when he says "did IT need to be so high?".

Amazing to think that without Roger's upbringing and the fears and anxieties that then developed as a consequence, further manifesting into a paranoid hatred of the business that made him rich, that we would probably have been denied some of the finest albums of all time. The Wall album says a lot but i think Animals says even more, my favourite Floyd album. Having said that, Have a Cigar is the start of that writing period for me although some of the purists will probably educate me on that, of which, I'm admittedly not one but have listened to them for 40 years.

Fifty two years, for me! It's sad it's all coming to an end! First Sid, then Rchard, Nick is doing his own thing (but for how much longer?) David has a deteriorating neurological disease and that leaves Roger to carry on. But as I've said, they leave a lifetime of music to us! Let us be thankful for that.....

It's interesting to me that I have watched about a half dozen people react to this song and the therapist is the only one who didn't seem to understand the meaning of the song. It's about an overbearing mother's contribution to building the psychological "wall" that Pink constructs which cuts him off and detaches/imprisons him from the world. The last line is Pink asking why she was so protective that she made it nearly impossible for him to overcome the barriers she instilled.

It's a lamentation. Single mothers raise fractured men since forever. On the one hand, I love my mother. On the other hand, her brand of love puts men in therapy if they don't end themselves or subsist in a semi fugue state to protect themselves from what her influence has done in their lives, while repeating everything that foments a kind of misery. (Hyperbole for the win!). Some things once you "name" them, you can let them go more easily. "Mother" helped me with this many years ago. Thanks for sharing!

Mother, was Roger Waters' mother, who after his father was killed in WWII was overly protective and domineering! There are other references to his mother in other songs. Theres a portion of a song, in the Animals album, that has reference to the air raid sirens in London, during WWII! That same sound is used in Comfortably Numb, Pulse concert, as the mirrored ball begins to open! Pink Floyd has a lifetime of music to explore! I first heard them on the album, MORE, The Soundtrack to the movie, in 1971! I first heard them live at The Second British Rock Gathering, Germersheim, Germany, May of 1972. They started off with One Of These Days! It was...ELECTRIC!😊

I believe the line says, "Mother did it need to be so high?" "It" refers to the emotional "wall" that his mother helped him build around himself--a wall of protection (over-protection, in reality) that keeps him "safe", but at the same time isolates him from meaningful connection with others and keeps him from living a healthy, normal life. He was shut off, controlled & overprotected because, as the lyrics said, his mother "put all of her fears into" him.

Parents can have the best intentions but if they have unacknowledged personality issues they can do a lot of damage to a otherwise healthy mind.
