It wasn't as simple as that. Fun started as just a side project for all 3 of them. They've always been clear that they are 3 individual artists, & Fun is an artistic side project they collaborate on when they feel inspired to do so. They went on hiatus, as in truth they each were ready to, but Nate is the one that finally pulled the lever (and each are living more fulfilling lives since). When We Are Young hit, Jack faced an internal artistic conflict, saying he didn't want to be remembered for We Are Young, he didn't want to be singing We Are Young when he was 35. If you're so morally & artistically bothered by the thought of performing one of your collaborative hits in just few years time, I could imagine your fellow collaborators feeling a certain kind of way…. A lot happened to them personally and professionally in such a short amount of time, there was a lot of personal growth & artistic evolution they each went through individually. Nate and his gf broke up (Jack’s sister), he began dating Charlotte Ronson, he moved, and underwent a total transformation. He said it was the 1st time finally felt happy in his own skin, 1st time he was with someone else happy in their own skin, 1st time in his life he felt/saw the good in things & not automatically the negative (like winning an award but not album if the year), 1st time he’d ever written songs that _were him_ that the songs were his story of firsts. He owned up to mistakes he’d made during that time & being selfish with the last songs he wrote pre-hiatus. He grew from it, and his entire outlook and perspective changed drastically, for the better. Jack talked about how much the death of his other sister affected him (I believe she was 13, he 18, she had brain cancer) & how her memory was what gave him a reason to live & was the engine behind Bleachers, his solo project he started while still in Fun. He also talked about wanting to make music that, in a nutshell, is much deeper & meaningful to him, that means something to others, that he doesn’t want to “chase the ambulance” that is pop music, he wants to be away from it all to create it. In an article from the NYT, “The problem was that Fun. was merely something Mr. Antonoff was a part of; he needed the music he made to be a part of him.”. Which, is the same thing Nate felt. I mean, you can’t really blame either of them for wanting to tell their own personal stories, _personally._ They have all said it would have been easy to capitalize on their success & continue what they were doing, but that’s not what Fun was about. The inspiration to work together collaboratively was what made Fun what it was, & things changed. They changed. And it worked out for the best for all 3 of them. Jack is a successful producer working with big names like Lorde & T Swift, there’s of course Bleachers. Andrew has been enjoying experimenting with music, working on an album, scoring some films and TV shows. Nate had his solo album Grand Romantic, which peaked at 7 on US Billboard 200. Critics said it was too theatrical, but Nate was happy. A stark contrast to how he would’ve felt about it before. He is an amazing, brave artist - a true artist who has grown so much, even in the face of undeserved scrutiny. He cares more about the art & meaning, the personal connection of music rather than the numbers; conveying a story - his story. And he does it beautifully

My Mom is really good friends with Andrew! He moved up to our small town on the bay and we eventually had him over for dinner. Awesome person, came to my graduation party and treated me very kindly. Such a genuine artist and humble person.
this band was my whole life for a while. i followed them as much as i could. i interviewed Dost on the phone. i interviewed Nate on their bus. Nattie and Noon was my brain child. i made Jack's JAIL DINNER shirt. i ended up winning a scholarship to tour with them for a week. i made a whole community of friends. the rest of the band and the crew recognized me by name at every show. i got recognized at shows by other fans because i was known in the fan community - it was awesome and my closest brush with personal fame. when i toured with them...that week included one of their very last shows where Nate was very intoxicated and behaving in ways that visibly annoyed the other band members. i had a bad feeling then and wasn't surprised when we kept holding our breath for a new album and it never came. this band will always, ALWAYS hold an incredibly special place in my heart. they taught me what i'm capable of and gave me a glimpse of my creative potential when my passion drives me. they gave me a true place to belong. it was a poor judgement call for Nate to go solo but i'll make peace with it. thank you fun. for all the firsts in my life: first photo passes, first time going on tour, first time loving myself. thank you.
What a great post, and thanks for sharing. It's so difficult to see when great bands throw it away for personal reasons they regret later. Queen had it right. Madness has it right. The Dead had it right. Very difficult with all the negative social media culture to make it today in the long run.
Nates album, while underrated, is not that bad. If you listen to the lyrics you can tell he put so much into it. I liked it and have the while album. I also love bleachers. I listen to it every morning. In the fun. Albums (have both) I Can tell the difference of what is Nate and jack.
The lyrics are good. That wasn't the problem with the album. When you compare it to "The Gambler" on the first album of FUN, which is such a real romantic song, the little diddy music hits right at the heart. Grand Romantic missed the mark in comparison.
Saw them at a Panic! At The Disco concert in Seattle. When I saw them, they said they had just wrote a song and wanted to share it for the first time. It was We Are Young!!!
Jack antonoff is one of my favoite musicians. Bleachers is such a good band it *almost* makes fun. breaking up okay Edit: I realize that bleachers is Jack’s solo project, but to me, it’s easier to refer to bleachers as a band. It’s like how Panic! At the disco is only Brendon Urie, but it’s still called Panic! At the Disco. 🙃
If that's true, then that person should have done everything within their power to ensure Nate's success because there are no guarantees in music and entertainment.
I noticed that some artists and groups that Janelle Monae collaborated with have faded while she rose. _Chester French_ and _fun._ were once great but now they just live in our playlists and memories.
Thank you for making this! I was a HUGE fan of fun., and I still am, their Some Nights album was perfect! Why Am I the One and Out on the Town are my favourite songs! Its a shame they broke up. I was waiting for them to come back! Their music added so much diversity to the industry.
This band and Nate Ruess' other band, The Format, are literally my favorite bands like ever. If you guys haven't heard it before, I highly recommend their first album, Aim and Ignite. The gambler made me cry the first time I heard it!!
The song Some Nights and We Are Young has been in my head ever since I was young, back then I didn't where the song came from, until I decided to listen to old music in YT and met Fun.
I saw fun. live in santa Barbara and it's the best concert I've ever been to. The music brought me to tears and the emotion was palpable to say the least. Always my favorite band. Nate ruess favorite artist and love grand romantic.

Carry On is my jam for keeping me going and never letting anything get me down. I listen to it and know I can overcome it all. I am glad we have the songs we have. Thank you for the love.
‘Some night’ was one of the most important song in my life, i was 14 and being aboard studying by myself was really a difficult time for me but this song helped me a lot and was a loved song between me and my friends
Marlene “The First Single” was instant love for me when I first heard it. I recognized his voice immediately when I first heard fun. purely from how much I listened to that track heh
This wasn't what I wanted to hear but what did I expect. Fun. was absolutely amazing and had unbelievable potential. Finally finding out what happened is so sad.
Imagine how Queen would've failed if any of the members went solo after 'Sheer Heart Attack' or 'A Night at the Opera'. They didn't start making solo stuff until they had like 5 or 6 hit records already
Fun. has been my favorite band of all time since I found them in 2009. Thank you for talking about them, because it seems like no one else wants to, including the members of the band :/ It's sad to see it in this sorta limbo
Damn some nights is an album I’ve never stopped listening to since it came out. When I was younger I’d play it every night while I was sleeping and now many years later I’m here listening to it whenever I’m driving around on my learners license.
Damn, I was upset to hear they stopped making music, now I'm twice upset knowing it was ego which derailed such a group. Oh well, like you stated, they gave us two incredible albums. Those two albums, 'A Fever You Can't Sweat Out' and 'Sam's Town' will always have a special place in my heart. There are so many incredible songs which take me back to that specific time in my life, but there's nothing (for me) like listening to those albums in their entirety. Older albums like 'From Under the Cork Tree' and 'The Black Parade' are absolutely part of my history as well, but they're not the same.
I was at the NHL winter classic and Nate was one of the musical guests during intermission. No one in the stadium knew who he was. He tried to get people to sing with him and it was crickets... You could see on the big screen how embarrassed he was. Even I had no idea who he was. Then they started playing "we are young" as their closer. And you could hear people in my section go: "Ohhh, that's who this guy is"
Grand Romantic was filled with bops.. “Nothing Without Love”, is a classic and y’all just slept on that whole album. 🤧 Jack’s album was full of bops too and is also underrated by most. Y’all have to learn you can like one or the other without having to bash on them. They are both good in their own ways.
This! Also, Nate rescued Harsh Lights, which was supposed to be a fun. single, but something (the "hiatus") happened and they never properly released it as a band, there's only a video of them playing it in a late night show. Nate recorded it and did justice to it, such a beautiful song.
If i meet the members i will literally fall onto my knees and cry and beg them to come back because theyr music has helped me sooo much and i need them to come back especially after 2020
You dont know how much the group Fun impacted people until We are Young comes on during a party. Look around, EVERYONE will know that song and will sing along.
@@joonasdarkside7085 a)you are an idiot b) it's actually Bleachers, not the Bleachers c) your grammar has me kinda confused d) I have respect e) Nate could've kept the momentum, instead he just threw away Jack Antonoff's creativity so really he's not a person with respect
Praying it’s new music 🙏🏼😍 the color scheme is very pastel and I’m thinking the vibe of this music could be very chill happy pop like her song King Of My Heart 💜
They said they’re not broken up. Just doing some solo stuff right now. Check their website out. It gives a good reason for not wanting to cash in on a successful album and instead waiting for more inspiration to hit. To give the fans another great album. They’re not broken up however
So neat to know what was of their lives. Perhaps we shall see them once again reunited later on. The possibilities would be grand. Throwback to those 2012 days.
I have so many good memories thanks to this band. At the time when young came out, I was dating this girl which became really important in my life. We would drive around the city and sing their songs. Sadly after 6 years we had to break up.There are times when I think of her and I play this song. Immediately when the song starts, these memories of us begging to play in my head. I close my eyes and relive it once more. Then I find myself smiling and hoping that she is doing good.
Why isn’t anyone talking about The Format. Nate’s band before Fun. Man. That band was amazing! And wow. Jack and Bleachers … dude! Keep focusing on that band! They are SO good.

I love Nate’s solo album as much as the F.U.N. ones
Grand Romantic was bad.
Brandon McNeill I only went to that tour just to see fun and left before Panic! Even hit the stage. Closest to a format concert I could get
S e a t t l e
Jack antonoff is one of my favoite musicians. Bleachers is such a good band it *almost* makes fun. breaking up okay
Edit: I realize that bleachers is Jack’s solo project, but to me, it’s easier to refer to bleachers as a band. It’s like how Panic! At the disco is only Brendon Urie, but it’s still called Panic! At the Disco. 🙃
Wait he does music ? I feel dumb i thought he was only a producer/writer
Bleachers is the best
His work with Lorde and Lana Del Rey is amazing
I love when he and Taylor Swift collab 😍 reputation is a whole fucking bop.
HE’S IN BLEACHERS? I’VE BEEN LISTENING TO THAT BAND FOREVER AND I NEVER KNEW 😧
Fun.'s first album is like still the best indie pop album of all time
*not saying much*
I love it so much I imported it from the US to Italy when I was 12 years old. Every track is special and well crafted.
Andy Burnstein it’s literally my favorite since I’ve first heard it
One of my all time favorites, I adore Aim and Ignite.
1. factually wrong
2. do you realize how big of an oxymoron "indie pop" is?
This sounds exactly like an executive/agent snuck in there and convinced nate to split off and Nate was weak to manipulation. I’d put money on it.
That always happens
Alana Correia peep nates tweets , hes done w music it seems :(
If that's true, then that person should have done everything within their power to ensure Nate's success because there are no guarantees in music and entertainment.
Not at all, actually. But, such a narrative catches ppl's attention more than "F.U.N. Amicably Goes Separate Ways"
Nate was pretty good doing solo though. At least his voice was amazing. Nate went on to collab with Eminem and Pink in iconic songs.
IM SO GLAD U MENTIONED THEIR COLLAB WITH PANIC!
Ikr, C'mon is so underrated
an underrated bop
Sooo underrated
SAMESAMESAMEE
I noticed that some artists and groups that Janelle Monae collaborated with have faded while she rose. _Chester French_ and _fun._ were once great but now they just live in our playlists and memories.
I feel like Grimes is the only one who didn't. Strange.
@@something6510 I think it's because Grimes was a lot more experienced than these artists when she collaborated with Janelle.
Whoever you are, you rock for mentioning Chester French
@@Mina-fl6us yeah that's true she had been around a while before art angels
She's a parasite.
I remember staring out the window of my car when Some Nights and We Are Young came on the radio
Me not knowing jack was from fun 😂 I always thought he was just Taylor swift friend
You were lucky, it was only this moment I realize he was from Fun. Hahaha.
omg same
This is my favorite band. Nobody ever talks about it. Their so underrated.
i miss fun so much 😔 some nights is such an amazing album! the nostalgia is real
I like Nate and The Format, but I really don't like fun.
The Format were great for their time, and Aim and Ignite is a masterpiece
Omg same. That’s one of my favorite songs ever.
flex56k Everyone’s got their own opinions man. Don’t be an elitist prick.
give it up is one of my fav songs of all time!!
The song Some Nights and We Are Young has been in my head ever since I was young, back then I didn't where the song came from, until I decided to listen to old music in YT and met Fun.
"...because Jack Antonoff was behind the pen" 👀
i'm shook that i didn't know jack antonoff was in fun. i only knew him since lorde started working with him on melodrama
I loved Grand Romantic😭 and The Bleachers is one of my favorite bands
Hawk Holloway AMEN BROTHA🙏🏻
One of the bands I miss most honestly
I saw fun. live in santa Barbara and it's the best concert I've ever been to. The music brought me to tears and the emotion was palpable to say the least. Always my favorite band. Nate ruess favorite artist and love grand romantic.
I MISS NATE RUESS. Everyone say they don’t even know who he is and I’m very upset about that . Who agrees that he should come back 🥺
Someone needs to make a video on why Jack and Jack flopped.
New World yesssss
Or Jack and Finn, they disappeared out of nowhere 💀
caitlyn who r u they’re now doing more impactful things with the platform they had. they make videos every once and a while and you can watch them to get a taste of what they’re doing. as well as follow some of their social media
i heard that they were kicked off a tour for being sexist or smth
New World I don’t know who that is. When did they come about?
They were a big part of my childhood. Next video should be about Hot Chelle Rae, who was also big in the pop scene around the same time.
Uh how old wer ya
Abraar Mohammed around 10. I’m a youngin but I’m cultured :)
@@EPICBryce oh okay I was 15 when they were outshining every other pop group
Abraar Mohammed 2011-2012 were some good years for music
@@EPICBryce true true
Musicians that want to go solo, should take a lesson from Geri Halliwell.
Geri Halliwell isn’t a musician 😂😂
Carry On is my jam for keeping me going and never letting anything get me down. I listen to it and know I can overcome it all. I am glad we have the songs we have. Thank you for the love.
‘Some night’ was one of the most important song in my life, i was 14 and being aboard studying by myself was really a difficult time for me but this song helped me a lot and was a loved song between me and my friends
The Gambler will always be my favorite. We Are Young? Some Nights? Classics. Too bad they ended too soon
I feel that. The gambler is such a good song.
I love Be calm and Benson hedges from aim and ignite, also Dog problems from when he was in the format
the entire aim and ignite album is a masterpiece.
Beyer I agree, it is, Dog problems comes a close second. Nate’s song writing on that album was amazing.
The Gambler is sooo beautiful
I've listened to a few of their songs they're really good!!
I’m gay for Rogerina too☺️♥️
listen to the gambler
Does no one remember The Format? They were GENIUS.. miss them too..
The Format was basically my high school soundtrack.
The Format was so much more interesting than fun.
Marlene “The First Single” was instant love for me when I first heard it. I recognized his voice immediately when I first heard fun. purely from how much I listened to that track heh
@@Pendarr "First Single" gave me so many memories in high school. I got my first kiss because I put on the song lol
I was only scrolling the comments to see if anyone would mention The Format. Great band.
We are young and some nights .. Was and still is a great songs..
I really hope Fun. gets back together soon. The world needs more bands like them.
The Gambler makes me cry! It’s such a good song lol and I will always love “We Are Young” cuz it makes me feel nostalgic of the good times!
I never knew a TH-camr showing a panic! at the disco vices clip would make me so happy SKSKSK
Tbh. I want them to return .. they’re like a drug. once you’ve listen to them the melodies never wears off
This wasn't what I wanted to hear but what did I expect. Fun. was absolutely amazing and had unbelievable potential. Finally finding out what happened is so sad.
Fun. will always and forever be one of my favorite bands. I was devastated I never got to see them in concert.
I always thought they would be considered “The Queen” of our generation especially with Nate’s voice being eerily similar to Freddie Mercury’s..
Check out The Struts, Luke Spiller makes Nate look like a tit
I feel like Stars from Some Nights is a little like the structure of Bohemian Rhapsody lol
Imagine how Queen would've failed if any of the members went solo after 'Sheer Heart Attack' or 'A Night at the Opera'. They didn't start making solo stuff until they had like 5 or 6 hit records already
I actually thought it was a remixed Queen song when I first heard it!
Freddy Mercuries solo career didn’t fair well. Queen needed Freddy and Freddy needed Queen.
Love this band and so sorry for their end. Appreciate the music they did make for us! Nothing like it. Nothing.
Just get “the Format” back together again Nate. The first single is still better than anything by fun.
1080kk yaaaaaaaaassss. For the love of god this would be amazing
Yes 100% I love the format music, jack antonoff is too busy anyway doing great things
The Format was pretty great. But overall a lot of it hasn't aged well. Fun's first album was the best thing Nate ever did.
@@mudkips8399 On Your Porch is better than any Fun song...
Your wish has been granted dude
Fun. has been my favorite band of all time since I found them in 2009. Thank you for talking about them, because it seems like no one else wants to, including the members of the band :/ It's sad to see it in this sorta limbo
Nate's voice is so unique and blows me away. I love their sound, especially their less popular songs! So good!
The day the finally comeback it’s gonna be the greatest comeback ever
Ahhhh... The nostalgia. I was wondering what happened to them
I asked myself same question the other day.... FUN would have been one of the best act of all time if they continued.
Yup always ego getting in the way. Great vid as usual 😍
God I love them so much, Nate Ruess is still one of my favorite singers ever even though he’s MIA.
We are young
Some nights
Carry on
One foot
Why am I the one
Fun. Had some very good hits
We are young one of my most favorite songs
Ive loves Nate Ruess since The Format. I trust him to do whats best for him creatively and his mental health.
I only knew 3 songs from them but they are still among my fave indie bands
What is Jack's album called? Is it the one by bleachers band?
If i meet the members i will literally fall onto my knees and cry and beg them to come back because theyr music has helped me sooo much and i need them to come back especially after 2020
They've been my favourite band since 2013 and I would really love to see them together again. Also it's great that someone still remembers them
somewhere, having fun.
Thanks for this bc I was just thinking bout them this week lol
Every time I used to go to the yearly fair as a kid, "We Are Young" would play. And on the way back also, I don't know why LOL. Miss those days.
Like nobody ever heard of The Format. Nate wrote so many great songs. And he has the best voice since Freddie Mercury.
You dont know how much the group Fun impacted people until We are Young comes on during a party. Look around, EVERYONE will know that song and will sing along.
Who needs fun when you got bleachers? Sure, Nate’s voice is incredible, but real talk bleachers deserves more attention.
Bastille's all we have now
Lintang Rumi ayyyy bruh doom days the song is fire
Drew Gladwell hell yeah
Drew, you're an Idiot, cause you aren't a person with respect.
Yes, the bleachers are nice, but fun. was the matter, that Jack goes to be famous.
@@joonasdarkside7085
a)you are an idiot
b) it's actually Bleachers, not the Bleachers
c) your grammar has me kinda confused
d) I have respect
e) Nate could've kept the momentum, instead he just threw away Jack Antonoff's creativity so really he's not a person with respect
Me after reading the title: Where has the fun gone?
The video: Fun is a ban-
Me: oh..
Taylor Swift Countdown...what do you think it is?
Hopefully new music or I'll die, this is too much for my heart.
Fame perhaps got to Nate's head dang it
Probably
Everyone loved them in 2012... wow that’s crazy
They defined that whole era.
