    I played high school ball with a 3rd baseman that had freakishly big hands but insisted on an 11.5 inch glove. He taped his laces like that. He had to loosen the laces between the fingers so his hand would fit better but he hated the 'floppy' feeling in the fingertips. He started adding tape to make that feeling go away. He also said that adding 1/2 inch of tape between each finger gave him an extra 1.5 inches of spread at the fingertips. That extra half-ball of glove opening made it easier to field backhands and short hops more consistently (according to him anyway).

    He is one of the most exciting prospects I’ve ever watched. He’s still really raw, but when he connects the barrel to the ball… he hits the ball as hard as anyone. Once he starts to learn how to hit for more contact, he’s going to be a force with a bat, defensively, he’s already a freak. Super excited to see how he plays out

    I feel like he might put the tape there to try and keep the laces from coming loose especially since he tightens them so much

      I thought maybe it was to make small adjustments that can be done in a few seconds, during the game, and put off adjustment of the actual laces until after (or maybe never, if he was just adjusting for the conditions of that day).

    Ok from what I can gather being 6’6 playing baseball that’s smart to put the tape in between the fingers. For him it’s a natural feel of his hand being kinda open so now he has more control of the glove it’s literally apart of him

  • @Omnis2

    The tape is there to keep the laces tight but to not have the spacing between each finger contract. Also makes it easier to keep tension if you tighten between each finger and tape as you go.

    Always used an outfielder sized glove at SS and third base. Had a criss-cross open web too. The extra leather at the end of the fingers and the criss-cross web took more spin off of hard hit grounders and line drives. The ball didn't spin out of the glove the way I saw that happen with smaller gloves with closed webs. Accelerated spin on smoking hot grounders and line drives would spin them right out of small gloves and the ball would run right out of a closed web. Never had a problem getting the ball out of the pocket of the large glove either. Never found the supposed wisdom that it's easier to get the ball out of a small glove to be true.

    • @TheRoadLessChosen
      @TheRoadLessChosen 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Nah. It’s definitely true. My son started the season with his outfielder glove he got his freshman year and fumbled the ball multiple times. He said he felt like he couldn’t find the ball inside the glove. He’s 6’3 without shoes, big hands and 6’7 wingspan, so he has a 12.5 inch outfielders glove. Hes always been solid at 3rd and short but if you seen him field with the big glove you’d never know that was the case.

    Think he adds the tape to keep things tight like you mentioned, but without having to tighten the fingers lace so he has more "area" he can technically cover with the glove. Also since he has such large hands he probably likes it to feel looser at the base while still being tight on the fingertips.

    • @mal2ksc
      @mal2ksc ปีที่แล้ว

      My guess was that tape is good for adjustments during the game. You may fail to complete a tape adjustment, but you'll never be caught with your laces completely untied. Acting as a spacer to keep the fingers spread even with tight laces makes sense though.

    I use to use a outfielders glove on shortstop my whole career and it’s a difference in a good way. Catching bumpy grounders became way easier cause if you caught the ball in a bad way it was still forgiving and easier to field then using an infielders glove. Just break the glove in the way you see fit and it will come naturally.

    The subtle flare and loose laces increase the size of the opening to his glove. The downside to loose laces in the fingers is that overtime the fingers can become flimsy - moving all around with little stability. By adding tape, it turns the laces in between the fingers into a support mechanism like rebar - keeping the fingers apart but now firm and stable. You can replace it as much as you’d like, but if you use the cloth bat tape, it will stay and serve its purpose for as long as needed. I do the same and learned it from a couple international big leaguers in the early 90s.

    That throw was insane but at the same time, play doesn't get made without an amazing stretch by first base.

    I played HS ball and a little adult league and I used to be a major glove head back in the day. After all of this analysis it could also be that he just doesn't really give a crap about the specifics of his glove and sees the glove as just necessity to participate in the game. Some guys just don't care about their pancake, no pocket flapjack of a glove and just wanna play ball.

    Just picked up a 44 12.5" glove that I got extra stiff. And let me say it's extra stiff. Breaking it in has been work but I feel like it's going to be a nice glove once it's soft. Coming from a 12" Nike mitt it's way bigger.
    Primarily playing OF now so it should be a little better, although I never had issues with my Nike, until my dog ate all the supportive pieces. Then it just wouldn't stay on my hand when the ball made impact. Awesome glove, just couldn't find it anymore. 😢

    The tape that's between the fingers? Did you notice that the glove was vastly wider as the splits between the fingers did NOT fold back to make a smaller surface. That's the reason for the tape.

    4:44 the tape makes a ton of sense to me. It’s like when a catcher tapes around the straps on their gear to hold it in place. If the laces can’t move, then the fit should realistically stay the same all the time, and not have a need for tightening as it wears.

    That's weird. I did a lot of things he does too. I played 3rd first and catcher and I loved a deep pocket. I was always fast enough on transfers after I had the security. I would push that top middle down to make it feel wider and deeper.
    I want to buy a glove to use with my son as he grows up as I've never had a "nice nice" glove, always something on sale and sub 90 bucks.
    I like 2 in pinky and index out, I split it between 2 fingers in that crease for grip. I would wear a batting glove with my fielding glove for grip. I would get so sweaty.
    Man it is weird to see other people's way of doing things. I'm 6'5, was 6'2 when I stopped playing.

    I always bend my glove so the fingers touch the heal to flare it out. I do it constantly throughout the game by bending it on my hip or thigh.

    I played center with a 10 1/2 its what you're comfortable with. I was a catcher to begin with so I could have probably played with and 8". It's preference and depth perception. That's it.

    I used a 11.5 even in the outfield until college ball, for me it was the shallow transfer and knowing that I didn’t have to stretch in those “I think I got it” situations.
    That being said, my catchers mitt was always used and abused
