As a catcher the only glove that comes with a deep pocket brand new are Japanese catchers mitts all other brands you have to deepen the pocket on your on by break in and just pure use of the mitt
My two gamers for college are my old Easton Flagship, had it for 4 years now, still rocking, then my “backup” is the Easton Professional Kip, still debating which I’ll end up gaming, but both were under $200 and blow away any Rawlings or Wilson mitt I’ve used
I have a 34 inch under armour catchers glove and i love that thing. Super durable feels great and was an easy break in, aswell as being only 200 australian dollars(not sure what that is in usd)
Excellent premise. If you can dig up a NOS Rawlings with the metal eyelets. My 8 year old used a crap a360 this past year. He has a nokona, and I bought a NOS $23 piazza 32 for him, and there is nothing like those late 90’s Rawlings mitts. Built like tanks.
What is the model number of the Piazza glove you bought? I've got a much older Rawlings mitt from the 80s or possibly even the 70s and I will never have that tank broken in
I just bought my 8 year, old, a 2nd year player the cheaper Rawlings glove you started with. I gave it to him for Christmas today. I thought it was excellent when trying it in the store. It was easy enough to close and I knew we could break it in easy. I played catch with him for two hours today. I used the new catchers mitt to expedite break in because my hand is stronger. The pop on it was amazing at times! I mean, I felt the "pop" in my soul....so clean. Loved it. I was feeling bad during your review that I made the wrong decision. However, I think it will work for us for at least one season. However, one fact I took from this was that I shouldn't try and break it in too much that it becomes floppy. Thanks for your review.
i had the rawlings glove as an emergency mitt for summer ball my senior year and after using it for 1 tourney the actual web and leather began to rip before the laces gave way
i use the r9 as a catcher i think it is a good glove but i always go shifted with top down if u get one i recommend getting new laces if u are catching heat
BGK - gotta tell you, after your gamer xle review for the IF glove, we bought one, and the red/black gamer xle catchers mitt (different colorway, same mitt). Noticed the same performance as you, felt great quality but a shallow pocket and a lot of pop outs. Breaking it in has helped. BUT a HUGE problem - the soft side of the velcro failed before it ever saw game use! Now, i warned my 13yo about NOT pulling and placing the strap alot to avoid wear, and he really left it alone. Didnt matter, the soft side is CHEAP and THIN. I ended up stitching in a replacement panel on a four month old glove. So disappointed. I think this is a deal breaker for an otherwise quality mitt.
Hola!
I got a brand new catchers mitt in the early 90s and it was hard to close and in 90s money was probably equivalent to the $150 gloves. Once I played catcher on a regular basis was when I able to loosen the glove.
My dad used to catch, he’s is obsessed with catchers mitts. I have a Wilson 360, and a team nokona. But he gets old gloves off eBay that are like brand new, maybe just have sharpie on it. I got a terry steinbach wilson I am moving to now. But we are breaking in a rcm 32.5 Piazza that was new old stock too. Wilson’s pockets aren’t as deep as Rawlings. But they’re a lot more broken in when new. The Rawlings takes real work. The Wilson’s take 15 mins.
I’ll say this I feel Rawlings is the OG high end glove maker, and Wilson is a close second and mizuno has caught up a lot in the past few years and now they are pretty comparable. But the custumability that you get with Rawlings is awesome I mean you can customize every single inch of your glove.
@@ballgloveking I’ll be honest I haven’t needed a glove in so long I wouldn’t know, but I think customizing it is half the battle now days, I know forsure if a glove company offered that when I was playing that’s what I’d want.
I have the all star tan glove you were talking about once you break it in and adjust it to your hand it is pretty nice. But it has like 3000 catches on it and hasn’t broke
GREAT VIDEO! For the budget gloves, could you please try the Wilson A500. I am a 13u AA catcher and it was 120$ (I think). I have it broke in with a box break in. If you need I can send a picture or video of the glove. I think you could be impressed by this glove. Thanks for being such a great guy!
R9 is great transition mitt for middle school kids instead of spending so much to repeat once high-school! Son used it form 9 to 14 then past two yeara HOH (34)! Will have him either Allstar 3000 (black) or HOH 33 by emd of this year so it be broke in for his Jr year!
I used to oil my gloves and put them in the oven as kid. Helped really break them in. I have a Mizzuno mitt from the 1990’s, no idea the model number but it’s built like a tank and held up over 30 years. Kinda resembles the MZP-20 pro just off pictures I’ve seen.
My son turns 13 at the end of the month. He started catching FT 2 years ago. We started with a Renegade but had the small pocket issue. We upgraded him to a Wilson A1000 and he loves it. Perfect pocket, break in was painless (box break in) and quality materials. He'll likely move to an A2000 or HOH when he moves up to 15U
My son is 8 and he currently uses a 31.5 inch. Anything above that falls off of his hand, but alot of balls pop out of the glove because the pocket is so small
Agree on the All Star @14:50 I bought one to break in for my little league kids because of all the trash the local little league hands out. It took a long time to get it game worthy (I considered a plus). The leather felt good IMO. But I do agree 100% on the thumb loop. I bought a GloveLock which made it slightly more reliable. The single lace is not a good look at all though. You can't take it serious with that.
That's a tough one bro! I'd say go with a Rawlings DCT cause its pretty dang deep. You really just need the deepest glove possible! But my first thought is a Rawlings DCT and go two in the pinky
@@ballgloveking Thanks King for getting back to me. I switched over to 1st to give my elbow a break while doing Physical Therapy. I actually got the DCT in the GG elite variant second hand. Great glove, but the glove is getting to floppy for me. Just wanted your opinion before I spend big money on a new mitt. Thanks again
I have had 2 softball catchers in my family. Wilson cheaper gloves have worked great for starting out with small hands. Rawlings highlight is a step up. Not gonna be durable but light for small catcher. She has an R9 fielding glove and if she sticks with it wants a GG elite catchers mitt.
should've looked at the All Star Top Star instead of the CM3200. Same price point, but think it would remedy much of your complaints with the All Star.
When I played I used Wilson a2000 or Rawlings pro preferred with 2 in the pinky. Preferred the Rawlings because they were a little softer and had better feel in my opinion but my transfers were quicker with the Wilson and I didn't seem to get thumbed as much. Mizuno and all-stars felt too big and deep. Love the videos! Hope this helps someone.
Dedicated rawlings sandlot review? Btw I use a 44 pro pro 44 infield 11.75 one piece web im just wondering what you would think of the sandlot I have used a Rawlings play prefferd which is the same price as the sandlot but is more of a slow pitch glove the pocket is 2 deep i used it as a cheap backup glove but I want to see if I should give it to my dad and buy a Rawlings sandlot (my dad uses a 1980s cal Ripken glove model he’s looking into a new glove he probably won’t buy one so I want to see a review of the sandlot because honestly your reviews are the best on TH-cam for glove things
Sorry I didn’t make my response clear but I’m at dicks right now and surprisingly they have a sandlot just bought it for 80 it feels way better then I thought it would be when I get home I’ll start my break in I’ve already started the break in brought my mallet in the car but yea btw dicks had the stiffest feeling none broken in gg elite it was stiffer then another one which had the exact same specs what’s that about… for 80 bucks it’s probably going to be a better back up glove I’m confused on which pattern it is but it’s a pretty good feeling pattern (I keep updating this comment btw)
Do you think you could fix a bad break in on a HOH catchers mitt? Closes thumb to middle with a crease and almost no pocket. Ball pinches out and pops out.
