⚓️Will the Big Wave Hit? Watch 1000-Foot Ship Depart Duluth!

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 27 ต.ค. 2024
- Hello, Boat Friends!
Join me for an exhilarating adventure as I capture the departure of the 1000-foot Burns Harbor, owned by the American Steamship Company, from the Canadian National dock in Duluth on June 22, 2024. In this action-packed video, we explore the build-up to a potential big wave, adding to the thrill of this ship's departure.
A storm was approaching Duluth just as the Burns Harbor was setting off, and I captured it all on Doppler radar. Watch as the waves slowly build and crash against the bow of this massive vessel. Will the big wave hit?
Adding to the excitement, you'll see surfers riding the waves on Lake Superior, making this a must-watch for both ship enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.
The Burns Harbor was loading taconite at the Canadian National dock, providing a fascinating glimpse into the operations of this giant ship.
This video is packed with excitement and anticipation. Whether you're a long-time ship watcher or new to my channel, you'll find this departure thrilling and captivating.

Hi Mike and boat friends nation. Please don’t ever stop doing these ship videos. They are incredibly interesting and fun and there just simply isn’t any other videos like this out there!❤🚢⚓️
Thank you so much for the wonderful comment
Watching the ships pivot never gets old. What is elusive to most casual observers is the fact that there is nearly 30 feet of the ship beneath the waterline, and the captain spins the ship around like it is a flat-bottom river boat. Amazing.
I tried to keep the whole vessel in the shot as it approach the end of the piers. It’s just so huge. They are beasts.
Duluth ships, big waves, wind and Mike with all the excitement. Doesn’t get any better.
Thos is sooo fascinating! 1:44 ! Can't wait to see more of this!
I’m thrilled that you enjoy this video. I can’t wait to show you more videos moving forward with interesting weather and these big ships.
Lived in Duluth while going to UMD. Great town. Loved the times spent watching ships come in and leave. Miss it a lot. Thanks
What a wonderful comment! It means a lot that you would take time to write something nice like this! I hope you subscribe (it’s free) and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Good afternoon sir keep up the good work your doing sir.
John, I hope you’re having a fantastic day. It means a lot that you took some time to leave a comment. It’s very easy to move on after watching a video. Thanks for taking extra a few minutes.
Great video Mike! Had a great time when I visited Duluth....the lift bridge and maritime museum was a great stop!
I’m really happy that you had a great time. That makes a big difference.
@@vibewithmike I was the guy riding my bike from Pa. and you were out of town. Maybe next season we can meet and talk a bit.
@tomluckenbill6583 I remember this! I really hope we get to meet. I’m in Duluth about 50% of the time.
Gosh what a gorgeous day to be in Duluth!! Too bad I’m closer to Sioux Falls 😂 love the waves!! Thanks again Mike!
I hope everything is going great in Sioux Falls! I’m guessing you got pretty good weather as well right now. The waves get much larger with the bigger storms, but hey, I figured even a smaller wave would be fun for a Sunday.
@@vibewithmike I loved it! I’m in brookings, and just more rain and mosquitoes! It’s been really cool weather here, crops sure aren’t knee high!
@@yeahletsunpackthat I don’t know if you had the same thing happened, but about three weeks ago, the black flies were out of control in Minnesota. They seem to get a little better, but it was kind of wild for a little bit.
@@vibewithmike not the biting black flies… Madeline island about 5 years ago, I got stuck (photographing a bride and groom on the outcroppings) and I had about 100 of them eat through my sock and ate my ankle open and bloody. Worst bug experience ever, and I’ve shot about anywhere you can think of. lol I’ve never handled mosquitoes after that, I literally welt and bruise. Doctor said I am now allergic to biting insects.. Thanks Madeline lol still would live there in a heartbeat tho!
And thank goodness we don’t have them just little bit south!
This is a cool angle Mike! I love the weather too! Over here its rather cold. Its going to be -4'C tonight, which is way colder than what we typically get here we are haha! Those ways are nice man! Pretty good! Awesome that they painted it the lighthouse walls! Seems like those waves are giving some resistance! When you see that ity bity tiny human on the deck waving at you you realize the sheer scale of these behemoths! Thank you for sharing bro! 🚢🛳🌊🌊
The waves get much larger as we both know, but it’s always fun to see any type of waves. I hope all is well in South Africa, brother.🇿🇦⛴️👍
@@vibewithmike That is very true but I still think these are large considering its a lake! We had maintenance on our power today so I literally only got power after 13 hours. Other than that I cant complain! 😅Hope your weekend was awesome Bro!
@johanvandersandt8904 hopefully you don’t have any more power issues
@@vibewithmike I hope so too! We havent had loadshedding for at least a hundred days! So that is like the most days we had power for more than a decade lol.
@johanvandersandt8904 👍⛴️
The Burns Harbor is huge. Thanks for the awesome video of the Burns Harbor turning at the top of the entrance. My friend and I were there last Saturday, the 29th of June. We only saw the cruise ship coming in. We strolled along the shops, stopping in at every store. We bought items. We had dinner at Grandma's!! Have you ever had Grandma's wild rice burger? The burger is totally awesome! Sometime I'll catch you recording and I'll stop by.
Now this is going to be a fun, chain. You mentioned the grandmas wild rice burger. I never have tried that, I’m hoping you did so you can tell me if it is worth getting. They’re wild rice soup is fantastic, but I’ve never pulled the trigger with that burger.
@@vibewithmikegood morning Mike. The wild rice burger at Grandma's is very good. Hope you have a good appetite! The burger is big. It comes with fries. I hope you will like the wild rice burger. Let me know when you try the burger. I haven't had wild rice soup. Next time we are at Grandma's I will try the wild rice soup. I love your videos. Thank you for the reply.
@melissawarfield I’ve had the soup many times but I’m gonna try that burger. I will let you know. That sounds great.
For whatever reason, I really like the overcast, blustery videos. To me, this helps accentuate the size and power of these lakers......especially the footers. They are so very majestic! And these types of videos make a person respect the power and uncertainty of nature so much more.
The Burns Harbor is one of my favorite ships. Love the extra level on the superstructure. I also like the fact that this ship has retained her original name since construction in 1980. This isn't always the case for ships. They sometimes get renamed over and over again.
And for those that might not know, Burns Harbor is a large port just east of Gary, Indiana.
Chuck, I noticed that it was a very friendly crew you could see waving from the back at all of the crowd. What a nice group of people on that ASC ship.
@@vibewithmike I think I counted 4 guys on the stern part of the ship. Always great to see the crew waving to the crowd!
@chuckg6039 👍⛴️
Hi,Mike and Boat friends.Great day
Happy Sunday, my friend! It’s always fun seeing the big thousand foot ships depart Duluth
Thanks Mike. Am still in Texas. Waitin for the residuals from hurricane Beryl to get done. Love the action on Superior. Stay safe everyone 🙏 ❤🎉
I’ve been looking at the weather channel to keep my eye on what’s going on. Hopefully it doesn’t get too out of control.
Great coverage of the Burns Harbor Mike! Glad the avid surfers were able to catch some waves 🌊 🚢
I think it’s cool watching those surfers, but you’ll never see me on video going out there surfing. I’ll just record from the shore.🤣🤣🤣🤣👋🏄♂️🏄♂️🏄♂️🏄♂️🏄♂️🌊🌊🌊🌊
You just made my Sunday afternoon! Thanks, Mike! What a beautiful ship❤❤❤
Susan, you made my Sunday! To have someone tell me that their day was made to watch a video of a wonderful ship like this really makes my day. Thank you so much God bless.
I admire the captain that can ”drive” this gigant and make it look easy! Fantastic with the waves! Thank’s for this one Mike😃👍
Those captains are so impressive that they can navigate these huge vessels

Whenever I watch these monsters I say "UNREAL" out loud all of the time LOL. I have the utmost respect for crews like this one as well as coal miners. Also, I think I read recently something about on November 10 each year the Anderson comes to Deluth and the captain gives a particular salute in honor of the Fitz. Did I remember this right? On another note, there is a youtuber called Restless Viking who was standing at the Deluth region like you do and because of your vids I guessed his location before he told us. Thanks again for showing us these incredible boats!!
It’s so hard to describe the people how huge these vessels are as they go by. They are literal downtown skyscrapers laid on the side, moving through the water. They are remarkable, majestic, and beautiful. Nice hearing from you, Lisa.
@@vibewithmike That is the Best Description of a Ship, that I have ever read before!!! Awesome!!! Thanks Mike for another Fabulous Video!!
Do you really like high humidity/90 deg weather better than what you have experienced today in DLH? If Yes, I would feel sooo bad that you didn't like DLH's WX!! I Love Love your description of Ship!!! 🤗❤️👍🙋🏻♀️
@kimfrommn7162 what a nice comment, Kim! Thank you so much
I still say you are a teacher at heart! Educating the world about Great Lakes ships!
I’m back down in the Twin Cities. I was watching was watching the DHC cams today and I always like reading your commentary with the others. It was cool watching the barker.
I love it when people are seeing something so special for the 1st time! I get excited for them! @vibewithmike
@laurenolson8492 I agree with you
What a great video Mike for the boat friends. Your Duluth water sure looks a little rough. Love the super structure on this lady of the lakes. Thanks again Mike you are the best, and always makes my day. Peace!!
Thanks for stopping by and saying hello Scott! I hope you had a great weekend and a great Fourth of July. I really appreciate you stopping by tonight.
Always neat to see some wave action on the bow of those big ships, thanks for the video Mike
We know the waves are going to get much bigger as we get closer to the fall
Hi Mike, the Burns Harbour is a very impressive vessel, those 1000 footers unbelievable to watch, as they head out onto the lake, a great video.
Philip, this is definitely one of my favorites and it’s a super powerful ship at that
Thanks for a new and unique perspective on the Burns Harbor leaving Duluth.
I’m glad you mentioned that, typically you don’t see me standing on the lighthouse watching the ship, but I always want to make things new and fresh for you and all of our boat friends👍⛴️
@@vibewithmike you definitely did this time.
@bonnievanprooyen3214 it was fun getting a new angle that I typically don’t do from the end of the pier
Fabulous position on the lighthouse Mike.
It’s always fun to move around and give perspective. I had a good time recording this video. Thanks for leaving the comment.
OMG, the waves have really picked up, that's the weather of Lake Superior. Great vid Mike, I've been in the hospital. UNITY in Fridley so havent been up to date on my shipwatching. Hope to be home by next week. Things move slowly and I have to say your communication is far superior to the medical folks I can say that as a retired nurse. As the old saying goes,, too many chiefs, not enough Indians, an no one is on the same page. This channel is a treat for the entire boating community, cant tell you how much its appreciated. Love to all the current and past mariners.❤

We both know those waves are going to get super wild. The real summer is actually starting in Duluth and I’m going to take advantage of it. I’m not gonna complain. I also have to tell you the mosquitoes have not been that bad.
Glad to hear the mosquito population is not overwhelming. As a teenager, I spent several summers on my uncles yacht. And other boats and the mosquitos on the river were voracious, along wth heat and humidity made evenings in a slip at the harriet island yacht club during late 1950s and 60s. were a real challange to the fun of being on the water. Hope you have a great summer on your new boat! Looking forward to even more vids.
@carolewoolley7017 believe me, those mosquitoes will be making a big appearance at some point
❤thanks Mike
Thank you for the comment. I really appreciate your interest in ships and having fun with the Boat friends community.
Hi Mike, I hope you are having a great day and Thank You for bringing us these great videos to enjoy!
I hope your Sunday is going great. Thanks again for taking time to watch another ship video in Duluth.

@@vibewithmike Days been good. Sitting here relaxing by the locks waiting for another boat to go by. Kinda slow right now. Algoma Discovery next up. At Neebish Island now.
@bobpurs I think it’s so cool that you’re able to chill and watch those ships
Lately my timing has been awful trying to catch you live Mike! Pretty decent wave action. I do have good timing in that the Burns Habor is one of my favorites from the American Steamship company. My Lord the Burns Harbor looks massive getting ready to pivot towards the canal on her way out of the harbor! That 106 on your decimal reader is pretty good considering you're at the far end of the canal. Safe voyage to the Captain & Crew of the Burns Harbor! Thanks Mike... I always look forward to your video's! ⚓🚢⚓
No worries, friend! That’s really wonderful watching the ships. Ken, don’t you think it gets no better than watching 1000 footer?

Another great video! Thank you for capturing this amazing ship 🚢
You could feel the power of the ship as I went by. It’s 1000 footer.
I'll give it an 8.5 on the bow splash meter, Mike. Thanks for the great video.
The waves get much bigger than the splashes get much bigger, but hey, it was still fun to record and anticipate if something would go down

Thanks for the videos, each one brings back memories, my Dad started working on the Great Lakes boats in the early 1950s, and worked for 36 years straight, then retired, then he would get called back to work because his "Steam" license was needed on ships that were being resurrected in the early 1990s.
The phone call often would start out as "We need you for only a trip or maybe 2", (Duluth to Buffalo & back) and oftentimes would turn into a few months, Mom was not always happy...
Was good money though..

Hey Mike, YT algorithm brought me to your channel a few weeks ago, I really like what you do, I appreciate the effort you put in for me and others to view the ships. I camp out in the UP, Northern Wisconsin and Minnesota a lot, so I added Duluth to my bucket list, I think it would be very cool to see the ships in person.
I think it’s so cool. How TH-cam can point us in new directions. I’ve been in that situation many times my friend. I’m going to help you out. Bookmark all of this information if you end up going to Duluth. I hope you subscribe and come back too my friend. I hope this information helps.
What to do in Duluth:
I definitely recommend these activities in Duluth. First, you must visit Anchor Bar in Superior, Wisconsin, just a short drive from Duluth. They have the best burgers, even featured on the TV show “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.” It’s cash only, so keep that in mind. This place is a must for ship lovers.
If the weather cooperates, the best restaurant balcony is at Mexico Lindo in the Fitger’s complex. You can park in the ramp and make sure to get your parking ticket validated before leaving the restaurant. The view alone is worth the stop, and you will really enjoy it. You look out on Lake Superior and the Lift Bridge!
One block from Lift Bridge, there’s a place called Father Time Antiques. It’s a really fun place to walk through, and I bet you’ll find some cool things to buy. Tons of interesting items to look at and purchase. Also, about 200 steps away from the antique shop is the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, which is another must-visit.
Finally, make sure you visit the Maritime Museum right next to the bridge. It’s free and a great spot for anyone who loves ships.
Ship schedules:
Here are the two tools that I use to determine when the ships will be arriving or departing in Duluth. Keep in mind, there is no sure thing because of weather, speed of loading/unloading, etc. However, if you use these two together, it’ll really help you know what’s going on. Here are those two tools.
#1
This is updated by Duluth Harbor Cams, this one can be accurate too, however, it’s all about when it gets updated as well. They do a good job. harborlookout.com/ships#0

This will help you determine exactly where the ship is in live time. It’s extremely accurate. The app I use is called “MarineTraffic” and it has a blue ship for the logo. You will really enjoy it! You can research vessel names and follow ships all over the world. You can download it on your Android or Apple phone.
@@vibewithmikeThank you Sir! Have a Blessed Day.
👋👍🙏
good idea wet suit cause that water is real cold !🕊
A person would definitely encounter hypothermia if they didn’t have their wetsuit. Check out the water temperature in Duluth right now on Lake superior. seatemperature.info/duluth-water-temperature.html
I was in the national park service on alcatraz island for 24 years 1994-2018 , i got to see every kind of ship all day, everyday !
What an awesome job to have. It was about eight years ago or so I toured Alcatraz. What was it like working there every day? The one thing I remember is after we got off the boat there was a steep walk all the way up to the top where the cell blocks were. What an amazing place with a lot of history. Here’s a video I did in San Francisco, where you will see Alcatraz. th-cam.com/video/tgeWFu1oGs0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=f0niF5HAy_zzoEr7
@@vibewithmike when the movie THE ROCK was made in 94,I had to stay at night with the film crew, they paided me union's wage, twice my pay! For many months. They would cater food to the island at night and I can tell you I was eating well, would eat with Nickolas and sean, sometimes nick and I would talk cars alot,if you Google, shark attack alcatraz you will see the first filming of a great white in the history of San Francisco Bay! This was October 15 2015, right next to the dock killing a sea lion. Thanks!
@dogsense3773 the amazing stories you must have. My personal favorite movie of all time featuring the island is escape from Alcatraz with Clint Eastwood.
Hi Mike, many greetings from Germany and CHEERS🙂
I hope you’re having a fantastic day. They’re in Germany, my friend. I’ll be doing a live stream very soon.
I have just discovered your site and am loving it. I live in Burlington, Ontario and we have the smaller lakers coming through to Hamilton Harbour. I used to live in South Africa in a Port City so have also seen the big fellas going by. Am thoroughly enjoying this new adventure and thank you again. Have a great day.
It really thrills me to know that you found this TH-cam channel. TH-cam is awesome for that. I have found so many channels that now peak my curiosity every day. I want to say this, welcome! Welcome to the Boat Friends community! we are people from all around the world that love ships, but we have developed so many friendships by just talking about life and things that we want to in the comment section and on the livestreams. Please don’t hesitate to ask any questions that you might have and join any way you want. You don’t have to know anything about ships. Heck, I barely knew anything about ships when I first started all of this. It’s all about learning and having fun with a good group of people that are all about helping one another. Again, welcome!👋👍⛴️🙏
@@vibewithmike thank you very much - I love reading the comments as well - you certainly are a Great group of people. I believe I shall know so much more about the lovely ships we see - you are really blessed to be able to see the really big guys passing through.
I’m glad that you found the channel. I love reading the comments as well. I’ve learned so many things from the comments and there’s so many wonderful people. It’s amazing. I really think that people that love watching ships are the best people on earth. It seems that way at least.
Great video as always my friend! It's hard to tell by the bow markers because she's moving and the waves, but is she really drawing 40+ feet or 4 stories below the waterline? It seems like she's carrying a full load, working hard as her builders intended for a big paycheck hopefully for the owners and more importantly the crew! Keep up the good coverage Mike! Your hard work is appreciated! 👍
I really appreciate the very linear and well written comment. After the Fitzgerald, the industry did change to make safety and crew first. Before it was all about record loads and paychecks. Let’s hope it stays that same way. We should never jeopardize a human life over a couple dollars.
Next thing you need to do is to get in touch with the aerial lift bridge people and see about being able to go in the control room on it in order to do a video of the arrival and/or departure of a ship. Maybe ask ASC if they could help.
Michael, unfortunately because it’s a city owned bridge they will never allow me in there. I’m not official news and if I was able to do it and every other person would asking should be granted that request as well. Unfortunately, it’ll never happen. 😔
Safe Voyage Burns Harbor! Blessing & Joy to All! ⛴️💜
Hey friend! I hope you’re doing great. Thank you for taking time to leave another comment and being part of this channel.
Bossier City Louisiana 91° getting ready for some weather from the remnants of the tropical storm
Another one of our friends down in Texas was talking about the tropical storm. I hope you don’t have too much rain and everything is OK.
Tomorrow 30-57 mph winds and 2-3 inches of rain so it will be a fast mover
@michaelstamper3096 that’s pretty substantial
Waving a hand from Texas the tropical strom is hittting us now
Peter, stay safe brother. Here’s the storm our friend is talking about. weather.com/storms/hurricane/video/tropical-storm-beryl-moving-towards-texas-coast
@@vibewithmike thanks
Stay safe!
@PeterWenzel-yn7fn 👍⛴️
Stay safe. Send the storm to Arizona.
Hi Mike. Burns Harbor isn't she pretty much associated with the Duluth Harbor 😊in the past? Thanks Mike
It’s in Duluth every every few days. It’s a beautiful powerful ship.
I love these videos!!
Kathy, I love that you love these videos! Love all around my friend. I hope you have a fantastic Monday night.
One think I have always wanted to do is go on a trip on a container ship.... Believe it or not they DO allow cruises for regular people... I think the max is like 10 people if Im correct.. But you get a nice state room, they make you meals, and you get to hang out on the ship.. But keep in mind they normally are 3 weeks long if not longer. I have researched them a lot and also on youtube here seen the videos of the staterooms . It would be very cool! Especially if you got some waves !! Another thing I would love is to go on a cruise on the ice breaking ship... As it breaks the ice...It would be great!
Hey, if you can find a way to get on one of those container ships. Let me know. That would be one heck of a trip. I would be interested in checking that out.
54 degrees in July sounds awesome mid 90s and humid in PA
I really am hoping for more days above 80° because our summer is very limited
This vessel was loaded!
That ship was a beast, leaving with the waves
Great video, where is your Summer? It was 97f at home the other in NC and 106f at the Raleigh/Durham Airport. A record high. But today it's 82 and rainy. Keep up the great work !
You have a really good point, there has only been a few days above 80° in Duluth. I hope that doesn’t mean we’re going to have a cold winter, maybe I shouldn’t have said that.🤣 I have a feeling the warm temperatures will be coming down Duluth. Thanks for taking some time out of your Sunday my friend.
I saw the "Algoma Equinox" make a huge water boulder ( 8-10 ft ) in front when going south-west on St-Laurent at "Trois-Rivières".
Howdy Mike and Boat Friends' nation from Seaside, Oregon where it is sunny and 75!!
Great video as always, Mike. There was some awesome splash action when the Burns hit those incoming swells.
We know the splashes will get more intense as the weather gets more intense, but hopefully I can get some big splashes when it’s warm out for once
