  • On Sunday night we got a call about one of Quinn’s horses that was stuck in the cattle guard in Colorado an hour and 45 minutes away from where we were. We loaded up and worked all night at getting him out. Go watch the rescue process!

Eugenia, that's also my name, I-don't see that often! My mother's name was also Eugenia. My google name is Anglophile, which means one who loves everything English. But google messed it up and put AngloPhil, making me sound like a man, which I'm not. I live in NC, where do you live?

Thank you for saying 99% of horses do not come out of cattle guards because while you were working on the guard and horse all I could think of was 40, 50 years ago the horse would have been shot, put down. That was the way and that was it.
Thank you for your hard work and saving the animal 💯

We built our cattle guards of 4" pipes laying in stirrups that were welded to the rails below. The pipes were free in the stirrups. The pipes could be removed individually. The design saved more than one curios calf. Good rescue. Thanks for sharing. 👍👍🇺🇲

My sister's 11-year-old Palamino gelding spooked and ran through a wooden fence impaling himself. It took 2 vets and a vet tech several hours to get the piece of wood out of his neck. He just missed both branches of his jugular vein. I am happy to report he is completely healed, which took a long time. Horses are so resilient. Glad yours had a happy ending also.

That is 100% amazing he didnt thrash too much and damage his tendons. Thats all thats down there really.. skin, bone, veins, tendons, and ligaments. Im glad he didnt sustain life ending tendon damage i hope hes able to heal. Thats the next hurdle, the blood flow down thete isnt good and the skin is so tight that stitches dont generally hold well. Hes not out of the woods but im so glad to hear he didnt damage tendons, ligaments, or bone!!

Wow. That was terrifying. And so glad he's out and walking. Great job guys.
The horse has only some cuts and scrapes. Amazing, no broken bones or tendons. It's going to take a couple of months to heal. As long as you can keep infection away.
The horse was smart enough to know he needed help, and didn't fight to much. This could have ended very badly.
    Hope he heals up fast.

    Cattle grates should be illegal!
A gate would be just as effective without the possibility of injuring animals.
People are so worried about “their” properties, they don’t consider the damage these cause.

We got those all over Iceland and hardly ever a horse gets stuck in them. This horse must have been scared or saw it too late or pushed on it, most will stop or eventualy try to jump over. But yes I agree the damage they can do is horrible, most will not live to survive being stuck in one.

You should reach out to local welders and find out if any of them have a gouger and the ability to do mobile gouging. It's an extremely fast way of cutting steel that causes the steel bar to heat up as little as possible. This can be handy if you ever have to do another animal rescue that requires cutting metal to get the animal out. If the welder will agree to take this rig mobile for the rescue it can save hours of time and change the outcome for the better.

I lived in rural Ireland and I've seen cattle grids, but not like this. The ones I've seen were literally( I'm not even remotely an expert) like rolling ( or ones that didn't roll) cylinders that is hard to walk on, no gaps between them for ANY animal or human to get trapped in they are just incredibly off-putting especially for hoofed animals, worse case the animal will fall, which I know can be dangerous, but this here looks f**King barbaric... Jesus that's horrible...

Ugh I hate cattle guards. I know it makes it convenient for people but how hard is it to just get out and open a gate? Well I guess u the snow it's necessary, but put a gate up and only leave it open in the winter with use of the cattle guard. I don't know, this just took my breath away. Thet poor horse. I wonder how long he was panicking in there before someone saw him?! His legs look degloved in the picture whuch us what make me click on it. I'm shocked he was as calm as he was with use of meds. I hate seeing animals in situations where they don't understand what's going on, are scared and or in pain. That horse really did a great job of letting the humans take care of him, handing them the reins, (so to speak)
Thus is my first time on ths channel. I highly commend you all for the time, effort and empathy you put into caring for the horse ever so patiently, in the middle of the night. Thank you for your compassion and kindness

Thanks for the rescue, but since I love horses, I don't care how helpful cattle guards are, they should find another solution that WON'T harm horses, there is ALWAYS another solution, if SOMEONE would invent one, that's all it takes, someone with a bright mind thinking of a solution to a problem that should have been taken care of long ago.

Yeah, they never really worked where I live. Whenever there is a cattle guard there is always a regular gate because in winter they get filled in instantly with snow. They’re just inconvenient and dangerous for any animals that aren’t cattle.

Breaks my heart, cattleguards only protect a very small protion of a farmers lifestyle!!!
This horse was very fortunate. There are so many more that end up fatally harmed. I have seen a situation where a 17 hand horse escapades its pasture VIA a cattleguard just to end up decapitated by a car on the roadway adjacent to the pasture.

Thanks to all who helped get the horse out, I hope he will be ok but he will need to be kept a close eye on. Those cattle grids can be lethal, and that type in particular the bars are too far apart, we have those in the UK but not like that one. I know they are to keep livestock from going where they shouldn't, but prevention is better than cure. That horse was very close to losing his life, and only time will tell if he will recover fully from his ordeal. It's best to keep any animal away from those cattle grids, it doesn't matter what sort of animal it is, they need to be kept away from them to prevent this ever happening again.

When I saw the thumbnail and the beginning I though the horse was stuck in train tracks, thank God it was only a cattle guard which isnt much better but at least theres no threat of a train

We had the same thing happen some years back with a ol draft horse we had. He was dead and must have had a heart attack. Hope your horse will be ok. Best wishes

What a traumatizing thing to happen to this poor lad!! They should build those rungs closer together so no animal can get stuck! Thank you for helping this beautiful creature!!

That's the whole point of a cattle guard, most of the time animals will know not to cross because they can get stuck. Still, accidents like this are bound to happen, but building the rungs closer together would totally defeat the point of the cattle guard being there.

It would defeat the purpose. I had never seen one of these up close like this and it just looked like they could be made a little closer without the rungs touching of course. It would still be slippery for a hoof but the hoof couldn't go through. Thankyou for your reply. I learn something new every day!

Actually, it's better to build them farther apart so the animal can pull its feet out if they get in it. Too close together and there's a good chance something WILL get a leg trapped and then break the leg.

We always used the pipe cattle guards it's easier on the cows but because horses would normally fight it more I'm surprised that he was relatively calm.
