People emailed me and asked me to show more in detail how the startup procedure worked using the checklist, so here it is. This is my way of starting it and the checklist reflects this. It has been slightly adapted to suit my needs. Hope it serves some purpose, at least for posterity in the future when all the 520's are gone. - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
Always enjoy your videos. This one takes me back to being a little boy and helping my Dad go through his start up checklist on his Twin Commander (item, check, item, check, etc.). Just the sound of those engines is pure magic to the ear, and flying with you (watching your videos) is great. Thanks & keep them coming. M at KEGE
Articulate and to the point. AC's were mini airliners with a bit of the complex added in, but the joy of the bark and blat then music of the geared lyc's seem all the more rewarding. Not much of a task for the corporate pilot 60 years ago who was WWII trained, but I was only 2 by the time your 520 rolled out in Bethany Okla. Always great vids!
I fly on Flight Simulator on line with a group in Wisconsin. Earlier this year a company called Carenado came out with the Aero Commander 500 Shrike. I bought it as soon as it was released. I love flying it all over the world. I keep watching your videos of you flying your plane over and over. I understand why you upgraded, but I sure miss your videos.
You inspire me to learn how to fly, something I've always dreamed of! And great choice on your upgrade!
I used to run a 680 Super,1955 version out of LGA and through New England. Those geared Lycomings sounded great but were best treated kindly.
When you fired up, it was like a beast coming alive. I am not sure if I could deal with not having but one way to check fuel. During the time I was getting my ticket I saw a 520 run out of gas before he made the runway. He walked away but the 520 didn't make it. Once he hit, that was it, plowed right into the ground. Trying to save on fuel prices, he didn't want to top off until he got to our fbo, Thanks for posting. Your friend Rocco from Alabama
Had a 500B and then a Shrike. Never had a pump to increase Hydraulic pressure, but then the 520 was one of the earlier models which I never flew
That's great to hear. Nothing makes me happier than if I somehow can inspire people to learn to fly. That was always my idea with this videos, to demystify and show that it's achievable and that anyone can do it. Not only can anyone learn to fly, but almost everyone could afford to own an aircraft as well. The community need all the pilots and aircraft owners it can get, or this particular and wonderful freedom will disappear if the legislators have their way.
nice vid, always good to see a bit of the indepth stuff
That was really cool. Thanks for posting.
I loved it thank you for this
Love it! keep the videos coming!
Cool. The left engine almost sounds like a big radial engine on startup :)
That's correct. Like many Ted Smith designs, this only came with one hyd pump. So in the event of the right engine quitting, your only way to retract gear would be to use the hand pump I showed in the film, which could take some time. Also, at altitude if the right engine quit, the gear would come out as the only thing holding the gear up is hydraulic pressure. Not how one would design a twin today, but that's how they did it then.
Keeping the generators off during startup prolongs their life but mostly, it reduces drag on the engine and starter. Manufacturers don’t just make procedures so you can “speak with other people” and make up your own decisions. That’s exactly what causes a failure and I pray that it doesn’t happen in flight. Be safe.
brings back memeories
Very interesting!
Really cool
No Hyd pump on the rt eng? So if the left eng quits after TO you can't retract the gear?
Hooooo that sounds good. I wish I could own one of these so badly, I have loved watching your adventures in it. Is it too much to ask how much you purchased this airplane for?
$38K
What?? That's IT? 38 thousand for an Aero Commander?? How is that possible?
Don't get fooled by the low entry price;) Old twins are very cheap to get into these days for a reason. They cost a lot to bring back to flying if they've been neglected (and at these price points, they always have been). They're also very expensive to maintain and keep flying. Or how about $60K to overhaul each engine? Be prepared to spend at least $20K/year just in maintenance if nothing big goes wrong.
Why mag in left position for start?
The left magnetos are impulse magnetos that give a higher spark for start.
Hello!! Why magnetos on Left for start?? why not both?? thanks

Good evening Startobee1 thanks for your precise answer! I enjoy your videos very much.. Aerocomander is one of my favorite airplanes just like the Cessna 182 P I own!!keep on posting good videos!!
I saw that you are selling her after all this time! What did you end up purchasing?
It's actually not that much of a problem. As long as you keep tabs on your fuel consumption, it's very easy. I know how much she burns and how much is left after each flight. The only thing that could possibly catch you out is if someone stole fuel overnight and you neglected to check the fuel meter and/or it had malfunctioned.
Aerostar;)
Sounds like a Harley.
What!?!?! The Commander is being sold!?!?!?
Easy! XD
