It’s all about establishing solid routines early and holding yourself accountable to maintaining those routines. Also, that stage of life is the perfect opportunity to start teaching small lessons in maintaining healthy boundaries. Their room is theirs, and me and my wife’s room is ours. Their room is their sanctuary, as is ours. So many of my friends and acquaintances start down this path, then give up because they don’t hold that line once the kid starts testing boundaries. And really that’s all it is. Kids don’t abide bedtime when they lack routines and boundaries, and the more you let them test and “win”, for lack of a better word, the more the evening sleep disasters will keep happening. It’s that simple.

Same. I have a 5 year old who has been doing this ever single night since she has been in her own bed.

If he falls asleep with you beside him, he'll come looking for where you went in the middle of the night. You can't teach something new in the middle of teh night, work on independent sleep at bedtime.

You just need to hold the line and maintain the routine and the boundaries. You might have a few sleepless nights, but I guarantee your toddler will learn sooner than later.
