    This is the one of the best videos I have seen so far that shows the right way to get it done. Especially with only 2 engines and a small crew in a volunteer department. They pulled up, stretched the line, charged the line, made entry into the house and got in there to get the fire knocked down quickly. Excellent job.

    For two little volunteer companies, they did a really nice job. Quick water, fast aggressive attack for initial knockdown. Not bad. Not bad at all.

    Good job. Way to show hustle and a sense of urgency. Some of these fire videos it looks like the guys are sleepwalking when they arrive on scene. They could almost be yawning and stretching and scratching themselves while they consider whether they want to do anything. Not here. Very good aggressive attack.

  • @mabas21

    I feel for your department then, this was a flawless execution of how to attack a fire. This video was used at FDIC and NFPA as what to do.

    Congratulations you guys !. Very quick to get a hose on the fire, and your quick actions saved to rest of the house. Those " other" fire teams are a disgrace to the fire services, for their very slow response to getting on with doing their job, taking an extraordinarily long time to suit up, and actually get a hose on the fire. Well done !

  • @vlaup
    @vlaup 13 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    @tdluvs You want to fight it from the inside because it pushes the fire away from the unburned areas and keeps it confined to the burned areas, but with an exterior attack you're pushing the fire back to the unburned areas. The only time you should do an exterior attack is when its totally unsafe to go in.

    I loved using the pistol grip nozzles Akron Turbojets were my favorite. The Elkhart were very good as well but they had a push button lock and you just freely couldn’t adjust your GPM and spray pattern.

  • @mabas21

    You see what I recorded, you don't see the chief and assistant chief on scene prior to an engines arrival. 360 was done then and the size-up was transmitted to incoming companies. Utilities are rarely touched by fd members, especially when the object here is to extinguish the fire. They are not the utility company and have more important things to do. Why two lines you ask, one one the fire and one out the back window to knock the exterior fire. The fire was contained and youn were not inside

  • @mabas21
    @mabas21  11 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I don't, police were here way before me. Volunteer firefighters have to wake up, drive to the station, gear up, and then drive the apparatus to the fire. I get in my car and drive to the fire. Not being rude, but it's kind of self explanatory

    My hat is off to all firemen. They go into a building with smoke so heavy you can’t see your hand in front of your face not knowing if there is someone inside or if the place will blow up. Truly amazing

  • @mabas21

    I was told the house was a vacant foreclosure and the fire investigator did determine that it was arson. The fire was set at the rear of the house, I believe he said between the shed and the house

      mabas21: this video is very nicely shot. Someone has a nice steady hand.
      The description was also good. Lots of information.
      My issue is with the way the comments are set up. For whatever reason, I don't know who you were replying to. Have you deleted the original comments? You've certainly bitten quite a few heads off. Assuming you didn't like what they said, why did you do them a favour and hide what they said? If they made themselves look stupid, why not let them wear ii? Nobody ever died of having egg on their face. And if you're going to say something stupid on social media, there's a better than even chance that you're going to get called out on it.
      It might be a good idea to keep in mind that you are also being watched by civilians who really don't know. I am a civilian. You can go through all the comments on this video, and you will not find one single criticism from me about the firefighting. I wouldn't do that. I'm not a fire fighter I don't think firefighters would take too kindly to criticism from civilians. By the same token, as an opera singer, I don't have much interest in being critiqued by firefighters on my vocal technique. It's only logical. But I would respectfully suggest that you might not know your audience as well as you think you do.
      I wonder if TH-cam is playing hell with the order of the comments and responses.
      I am going to go out on a limb, however, and squawk about the armchair firefighters who think they can fight a fire from behind a keyboard. You better hope your keyboards don't catch fire, guys. You'll be up shit creek without a paddle in a big hurry.

      small ranch home, obvious fire is in the A/B corner and likely the attic space. Perfectly fine to advance standing up unless you can't. If the neutral plane was lower or you had no clue where the fire was, then yes low and go. I'm sure they dropped once they got about halfway down the hallway.

    Wow! This is a great department. I’ve watched many fire videos lately and I’m always amazed at how slow the men move and how long it takes them to start spraying. Then they seem to spray for 90 seconds and stop for a few minutes before they spray some more. Meanwhile I can’t stop thinking how the owners must feel watching their house burn and the flames get bigger and bigger with 25 firemen standing in the yard. This department was on it! Excellent work!

  • @mabas21
    @mabas21  12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That os ok on the translation. It is a shorter distance to run the hose out the back window of the house than to try and stretch a hose around the house. The second line was used to knock the fire down at the rear of the house

  • @911Dox
    @911Dox 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Top Grade Knockdown. Textbook response, well rehearsed & very effective. Attack crew with rescue line manned by senior officer for initial attack, back up line officers waiting at the door & additional officer maintaining foreground activities. the homeowners should be very happy, their home is a save & can be rebuilt with minimal loss, all things considered. If only all other scenes could go this well.
    Mabas21, great work as always. Your work speaks for itself, quality video/audio, good post production work. scripting all those memory chips & maintaining timeline can be a pain some days, post production is the "work" photographers must bear to be seen & appreciated.

    I will keep saying this as every now and then I come back to this video. This is a well coordinated fire attack. Front door is forced, attack line goes in and the second line goes in as backup. Job well done in my opinion.

  • @enid0mom

    I can't help but notice this house looks almost identical, from the front at least, to the house I grew up in in Colorado Springs, CO and was built in 1953 in one of those neighborhoods where every house was exactly the same as every other house. Rearranged windows or mirrored the floor plan was the only differences.
    On topic, I love watching this video. These guys make it look easy.

  • @JasmineLindros
    @JasmineLindros 10 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    First guys off the truck are ready to go as soon as their boots hit the ground. NOT a slow response because they had to hook up a hose and run it all the way down the street. Third and fourth guys in the door were looking in AND managing the hoses at the front door. Yes, a 360 would have been nice, but instead of running a hose all the way around the house, they knocked down the fire IN the house and pushed through to the back yard, running a hose through, instead of around, the house. This was exemplary work, well done.

    Responding units... were precise... Two Trucks, Two Crews... quick with hose set up... hoses were laid out without crossing each other... the inside crew had plenty of slack line to work with... hydrant line ran by first engine... water flow on quickly... crews were ready to attack... nice operation.

    They look for a lot of factors and in many cases use dogs to determine the point of origin and cause. In a case like this, you can clearly see where the bilk of the fire is. This narrows down your point of origin from an entire house to one room. Even after the fire is out, in many cases if an accelerant was used you can still smell it

    @tdluvs I can only tell you sth about the methods in germany. We always first try to get into the building in any case to knock down the fire with less water as possible, in order not to damage more from the people's guts as needed. But in germany, most houses have an massiv construction, so we don't risk fire in walls etc. or a the building collaps in any way. I think this makes a big difference in the choise of the tactic to attack the fire.

    If you watch the hose carefully, the one in the grass, it is charged by the time the door is taken and could be manned in a second if there was a flash over or heavy fire in that room. Hard to tell when the second hose gets charged but is a few seconds later. I asked my dad, an ex-fire fighter from the mid 50's through the early 70's. #1, since the fire was through the roof and window the chance of heavy fire or a flash from the door being taken was slim to none. #2, once hoses are charged....

      no, absolutely not. this fire required textbook aggressive interior attack. why do u think firemen wear a helmet, airpack, and gear!? attacking it from the exterior would had not been correct.

    • @madhatter5465
      @madhatter5465 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The reasoning their attack was best aside from text book is. If they would have hit it from the outside that would have pushed the fire back inside the house essentially causing the fire to spread to the unburnt part of the dwelling. Hope this helps

    Just an observation and NOT a critique. First line could have been from the outside while a crew was assembled to enter. MIGHT have had a knock down with a SS nozzle without "pushing the fire". They did a great job the way as transpired. You leave a prefab standing, ya done good!

    • @FSD_1776
      @FSD_1776 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Vincent Gatti Hose streams don't push fire. They did well in getting to hose lines inside and making an aggressive attack. Not sure why they needed 2 lines for this but still a good job.

      @Harley2010SG 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's the reason for the quotes. ;o)
      A quick blast with a SS can make enough of a knock-down to make the interior attack safer and quicker. I think they did an awesome job.

    Hey, greeting from Germany :)
    Wow, im impressed how fast you had water on your hoses and how good the inner attack had worked. One thing i would do different: not two hoses inside. Why not one inside and one going around the house on the right and later on a third on the left, b/c you never know what is in the garden. So you could have avoided the spread to the hood in the garden ans the trees.
    Never the less: Great job guys, great job!

    At the 5:54 mark... That shed would make me nervous. No telling how much gas, oil and paint is in there. And aren't there building codes about how close a shed can be to a residential structure?

    • @ffjsb

      No, there's rarely any codes for that. And generally the amount of gas and oil in a residential shed isn't that much. It's not like they have a tanker truck parked in the yard...

      Actually here in Milwaukee there are regulations governing the proximity of a shed to a house. Here you can have a shed as close as 3 ft from your house. If this is the case, the walls must be covered with one hour, fire resistant drywall. But overall the shed in this vid is VERY close to the involved home. If you are a FF on this call, why would you NOT be concerned about that?

      Unless there's a bomb in the shed, I'm really not concerned. I'm not going to fall through a hole in the floor of the shed, if it happened to collapse while I'm in it, I'd probably just stand up and brush the lightweight steel panels off of me, and I'm not going to get lost in it.
      I'd be MUCH more concerned about the heavy fire in the attic space of the house above my head.
      And your Milwaukee codes are probably only enforced IN the city, and most likely only if someone can see it and complain.

      Considering the things that folks place in a shed, you should be concerned. Most sheds house flammable/explosive products. I think we can both agree that's a potential hazard. And that hazard is amplified when that hazard is unknown. You don't want to wait until that potential hazard becomes a concern. Fortunately not much came of the shed in the vid. As far as the building code goes... again, looking at that 5:54 mark, it looks like the shed was the source of the fire. There is fire inside the shed and fire in between the shed and the house. Looks like the fire extended from the shed to the house. This vid makes the case for why a shed should not be placed in close proximity to any home (unless the walls are covered with one hour, fire resistant drywall). Clearly the homeowner would be in a better positon having ONLY his shed fire damaged and not his shed AND house damaged.

    Right on. The thing I don't see here is who pulled the power prior to entry? Not saying it wasn't done. How do you guys manage that?

    When they had arrived the fire had already burnt through the roof hence the fire was self vented. Even though there was an additional introduction of air when the door was kicked in, that would not cause a backdraft. Also the fire was venting out the rear.

    Why not any parallel attack from the beginning? Inside and outside. Positive: quick water.

    great video and great knockdown, but why are we grabbing the line and running the 40 yard dash to the front door?

    What are other's thoughts on attacking the fire through the window that is already open. Do an initial knock down and then move inside to do a quick search and then knock down the rest of the way?

    if you noticed at the beginning the fire has already burnt through the roof. there is no way a backdraft could be formed unless there was a separate room other than where the noticeable fire is seen. also since they fire has already made its was through the roof there is no need to vent.

    The only thing i could see that i would do differently if i were in charge, was to get a hose on the roof. correct if wrong? or the pros or cons?
    Im not going to be going into city fire right away. Ill be on a type 2 hand crew hopefully in april-late next year.

    I wander if the fire was started in the shed and spread to the house. It may have been arson. What happened to the house after the fire ? was it torn down . It sad such a nice looking house was lost.

    sometimes when the fire is contained to a smaller portion of the house, if you attack it from the outside, you run the risk of pushing the fire further into the rest of the house also.
