I only found out about your project today :( sad since I just ordered the pip-boy delux Bluetooth edition. I have to say I would much rather purchase yours when it is complete.
I love this design and I want to make an similar cable reel for a audio cable. Is it possible that you can release those CAD files for some inspiration? I already saw your comment that you won't release the files at this time. But that was a year ago so I give it a try anyway.
Just the whole pip-boy, links in the project log. No cad for just this mechanism. I never really got it working well, and it has to be tuned just so. I reverse engineered it from a overhead power cord mechanism I got at the hardware store.
Did I understand correctly that it takes less for in one direction than the other? As is it takes less for to extend the cable than its retracting force?
@@LouisG-gw4no The pull force and retraction force are the same, as it is a constant force spring. However, it doesn’t feel constant due to the cable friction as the spool unwinds.
Curious to ask, is this to the same scale to the Pip-Boy from the collector's edition? And have you shared this anywhere? I'm looking to customising my Pip-Boy to being better than what they released!
@@RhienneC Not the same size as the collectors edition. Mine is game accurate and scaled to fit me. Links to files in the project log, linked in the description
You happen to have a link to the specific torsion flat coil you used in this test? I'm making my own (kind of) and it appears you have the perfect spring in there! (well 2 of them!)
Hi!! great prototype. I'm looking for something similar but I don't have too much space available. Could you please tell me the outside sizes? Is there any possibility to have a CAD file? Do you think I could use a steel cable instead? Thank you very much.
USB-C really wouldn't be an option here the custom PCB is already difficult to split off into 4 pins, plus USB-C requires a not tighter wire length requirements, and mini-coax.
Any idea about when it should be finished? I get that there can be casualties but I need to save up my money so I can buy this when and if it comes out.
Hello there i don't know if someone has gave this idea or not but i have used band saw blades for retracting springs on a few of my projects they work good hope this will help.
Thank you for your comment. I checked the 3D rendering picture at the website :-). First, I am a college student living in Korea. By the way I have to make a cable reel to make my graduation work, but I don't know how to make a cable reel..... So can you give me some more detailed principles and drawings for cable reel?T_T..Please forgive my poor English for not using more casual expressions. T 0 T
I know this is an old thread, but may I ask if you still have the internal drawings or CAD file that I can reference to? I really want to make an automatic retractor for my parents’ phone chargers😂
The prototype about isn’t printable on its own. This is part of my larger pip-boy project. (Files linked in the comments) The mechanism has to be tweaked to you spring and cord. It is not just print and use.
Started printing the outer front file and it’s taking forever and will need a lot of work because of support material since my printer is not SLS. Still tried it because I like torturing myself, and I love the design of your model. I think the work will be well worth it. I put in what I get out I guess.
Joshua Driggs yeah my goal for this is a display/cosplay/semi functional Pip-Boy, later when I have the money I’ll get one in SLS and put in all of the electronics.
Joshua Driggs alright, the front shell printed out alright, but needs lots of cleanup and also the part shifted on the printer, which is partly my fault anyway, but it’s still awesome as a test piece/prototype
Hi, great work. I am trying to work on a similar gadget. I am trying to make a retractable assembly with encoder by which i can note precise amount of cable retracted from the assembly. Any help will be appreciated.

I would love to see the full assembly+soldering and everything for this. So cool
Really amazing stuff you're making, sir. Great videos and project, keep it up!
Please say your still working on this! I've been checking in. you've got the best pip boy I've seen!
all these functions would make the best fan-made pip-boy ever! you should post a new update soon.
so crazy that that's the only video on the retractable cable with stopper mechanism I have found :D
This is exactly what I wanted to try for making a Raspberry Pi Pip-Boy :D
You should do how to's, so I can do mine on my bluetooth edition. Love it!
it would be easier to just hack the software than try to hardmod it to be accurate like this
Can I buy yours
