+jsome5 vewer this is still better seeing that the switch is what changes the screen and not a touch screen however the app does make the process easier
My handheld version had a real GPS. It could show your current coordinates. A very, very minimal approach to mapping still interests me, but it is a complex challenge :)
Certainly! Definitely features to add. If you check out my other PipBoy video you'll see the "overbright" mode where the screen itself is the light. It's only bright enough to navigate in a small room, but not bad!
I'm considering it, perhaps as the "volume." For now the UI only "requires" the multi-position switch and the scrolling wheel. Thanks for the compliments!
Yep, I've got sounds and music already tested, there just wasn't quite enough space for the module and speaker I wanted to add, definitely coming in the future version!
Sadly the components from this model have returned to my parts bins. Check out my other PipBoy video and the instructable and you may be inspired to build your own!
The stats, SPECIAL, perks etc are all editable in code. This version is just meant to emulate the in-game ui. Check out my other handheld PipBoy video where I link to the build. It's more functional. If you google RasPi and PipBoy you'll find a guy who made a way to integrate gMaps with the ui. It's pretty slick, but I'm not too interested in that method. His pipboy caught fire...
Not sure how I could get around the licensing issues, I am using art assets from the game and will be using the sound assets in a future version, but I'm definitely thinking this might need to happen!
I love your design, the jump start key is a brilliant touch, very old school and badass! I' would love to see your own personal design and input on the Pipboy, like makeing your own personal modle, with your own flare. I love the key jump, and maybe adding a keypad that flips out, like the kind you can get from those old school texting phones
Not this one, but check out my handheld pipboy video and you find a link to a full write-up at instructables. This version just lacks real sensors, it's just an interactive gui.
Hey man really nice work, i love this thing! It would also be cool if you added an MP3 player of sorts inside to play Galaxy News Radio and all the songs.
I want the plans for this sooooooo bad :) Great Job for a demo. I would stick to only the Non-game functions tough (quests, inventory and such are a lil superficious i think). But you're definately getting there. Very Nice Job!
this would be cool if Bethesda adopted this idea and link it with the game so you wouldn't have to open it in the game but use it in real life sorta similar concept to the wii remote in a way but that's a terrible example but you get the picture actually better idea like the Nintendo DS 2 screens BOOM MIND BLOWN.
to switch between the modes in game it is two arrow butons on each side of the three lights, or the lights themselves. depends on if it is the console or pc version
Wouldn't it be REALLY awesome if you played on your computer or screen and used the pip-boy on your arm when you wanted to use the inventory, like with the Wii U on some games?
At E3 Bethesda if you get collectors edition you get a pipboy and if you use your phone you can I'm guessing swap items in inventory using your phone you don't even have to have the pipboy
@Aleator777, You don't really need the red button at all...The 3 lights are not status light....they are menu control buttons for Left(UP), Enter(Action), Right(Down)... and the scrolling wheel is actually not a mouse scrolling wheel....it's the analog radio tuning wheel or volume wheel (if you consider the tech setting in the game where a lot of machines are not digital)...
to switch modes in game the lights on the pipboy are also buttons. This technology has been done before i belive its a small plastic button (made out of the same plastic as sirens) and a LED the button should have a small caseing inside FOR the diode.
Hey man is there any way i could get a copy of the os as I'm 3d printing a case for a pip bot for a project I'm working on but i can't code and this is perfect
A couple things: 1. What do you use for the knob? 2. Would raspberry pi work if I wanted to make my pip boy into a smart watch like device? 3. How can you do real time mapping without having all the wires go somewhere other than the pip boy?
+CelluloidHoax The knob is just a random 1/8" one I found attached to a very small 6 position rotary switch. The Raspberry Pi could work, and there are a few people who are basing theirs on the Pi, but it is much larger and power hungry than an Arduino etc. Rea-time mapping is tricky. One of the guys doing a Pi build wrote some code to modify a open mapping database to look like the game version, but it is still quite a complicated task!
+Gargoyle364 Thank you! This is something I've toyed with for a long time. I made a working communicator watch recently. The design for the case is inspired by fallout quite a bit: www.instructables.com/id/Communicator-Watch/
Couple questions: Why a pot instead of, say, a radial switch like what you see for computer mouse scroll wheels? Also, Why not a Raspberry Pi instead of an Arduino? You could do a lot more with it.
A rotary encoder would have been more accurate to the dial, yes, but I had a pot on hand so that's why I went with it. When I made this (months before the video), the Pi was still quite new and I didn't have any linux experience at the time. It makes much more sense to use now (many people have made Pip builds with em) and it's something I would most likely use in a future version!
Shouldn't the Pip-Boy be in the right arm instead of the left? To me it would seem easier if I used my left hand to navigate through the screens rather than using my right
I imagine you could use MP3 tech and put the music and voice clips into it and put it on shuffle or something. Really awesome and I can't wait to see what it looks like in White and Blue interface. :3
I made most of it (this was before FO4 was even announced). This is a cast of a the Pipboy 3000 clock that was the giveaway for FO3. I wired the components and wrote the UI code.
Will you be making a new version that can pick up real radio and have an alarm clock and basicaly be a phone but its a pip boy because i keep leaving my phone on teh bus and if it was strapped to my arm i wouldnt?
(90,000 caps removed.) Here you go!
I will buy for 250 pre war money. (Not joking)
Make that 500 USD

Hello Harry long time no see!
this is so much better then the one came with fallout 4...
+Deccease Yang Thanks! The new version definitely gives me ideas for my next version.

+jsome5 vewer this is still better seeing that the switch is what changes the screen and not a touch screen however the app does make the process easier
+Deccease Yang anthyng better than that :D
If that one was like this the pip boy alone would cost like $200
[Terrifying Presence] It would be a wise decision to hand that Pip-Boy to me, I wouldn't want something to happen to your family.

I know this is an old video, but you should add a GPS for a truly interactive Pip-Boy
My handheld version had a real GPS. It could show your current coordinates. A very, very minimal approach to mapping still interests me, but it is a complex challenge :)
+Mr. Volt Damn mate good job! Maybe when you finish this one, you could make a pipboy 4000?
+Blyat Lightyear A Pip-Boy 4000? That doesn't exist, at least canonically.
Dan Sheridan I meant a pip boy from Fallout 4. I just dont know its real name
Blyat Lightyear Pip-Boy 3000 MK. IV.
Certainly! Definitely features to add. If you check out my other PipBoy video you'll see the "overbright" mode where the screen itself is the light. It's only bright enough to navigate in a small room, but not bad!
Oh definitely, I'm still deciding on what kinds of sensors I want to integrate into the next version and a pulse sensor is definitely on my list!
After all these years, this is still badass
This dude would get so many caps off of selling these.
It makes no sense how you have a quest from New Vegas, but have Radio Stations from Fallout 3
It's from fallout 3: halfway to Vegas. It's rare
[Barter 89] I'll give you 200 caps for that Pip-Boy. [Failed]
He's quite the skilled artist. His work was definitely an inspiration to work on my own artistic endeavors!
You should build a Pipboy 4000, with call functions and a heart and a blood pressure monitor and a pedometer :)
"Pedometer"???? XD
TF is a Pipboy 4000 Do you mean Pipboy 3000 Mk 4?
That sounds like it would be popular thing for a few months and die down
@@touristygull2059 Bethesda and Samsung present the Pip Boy Cosmos 3000
This is perhaps the greatest video game prop I've ever seen. I hope you continue inventing and that your projects are just as successful!
Love the idea and I've been keeping up sense the beginning. Keep up the good work and I'd love to buy a finished model!
Are these for sale?
Haha, thanks. This was a lot of fun to make, and Im glad I get to share it with other fans.
Yup, I've just ordered the parts for the next version. Stay tuned!
yeah...?
Thank you very much. As you can see, I'm also a fan. This was very difficult, but also very fun to build. Glad you like it!
I'm considering it, perhaps as the "volume." For now the UI only "requires" the multi-position switch and the scrolling wheel. Thanks for the compliments!
Thank you very much. Hopefully I can get some more free time to really work on more PipBoy models.
Again, i love the work and effort that you've put into the PipBoy, well done with it :D
That's hard to say, but I'll consider making a kit. A complete version would cost quite a bit more, since this one took quite a while to make!
Ive got the parts to do so, but very little time to work on this sort of thing. I'll definitely be trying to get something done before Halloween!
Yep, I've got sounds and music already tested, there just wasn't quite enough space for the module and speaker I wanted to add, definitely coming in the future version!
Thanks! I'm definitely looking into how I can integrate real health monitoring into the device
"The Omnitrix! He's wearing the Omnitrix! It does exist!" - Alien from Ben 10.
You made this 11 years ago?! 😮 how the heck is this the first ive seen it? Im finally building one as well using raspberry pi. ✌️
Of course you are, it just takes time. I certainly couldnt have built this a few years ago!
This was made with an Arduino variant, although I am considering using a single board linux computer such as the Pi for future versions!
Sadly the components from this model have returned to my parts bins. Check out my other PipBoy video and the instructable and you may be inspired to build your own!
Wow epic build mate you should definatly be working in creating props thats some real skill and time in that pip boy
For the future model yes, but this was a one off. Stay tuned!
Thanks! I'm currently working on more cool things like this and I'll be posting throughout the summer, stay tuned!
I'm definitely considering adding cellular options!
Whoops! Thanks for catching that!
Hey there, I was thinking that I would build the same pip boy because I love to have my own. I was thinking you’d show a tutorial or something
The three main lights are changed by the glove. It has a knob on it that moves between the 3 main info sections
Very nice. Perfect size screen for that prop replica.
Bro this is the coolest pipboy prop that i have ever seen 😊
Yeah, wearable tech is definitely trendy right now, here's hoping the big Corps decide to make something similar, preferably a bit lighter weight ;)
Not sure how I could get around the licensing issues, I am using art assets from the game and will be using the sound assets in a future version, but I'm definitely thinking this might need to happen!
nice pip boy you got there
The pipboy is how you keep your left arm in shape with your right arm in the wasteland.
Thanks! Stay tuned!
I love your design, the jump start key is a brilliant touch, very old school and badass! I' would love to see your own personal design and input on the Pipboy, like makeing your own personal modle, with your own flare. I've got some crowdfunding ideas ;) Stay tuned this summer!
You sir, are under rated
Stay tuned for an update! Ill try and get a new tutorial before Halloween!
Could you give a bit more insight on how you did the electronics and what you have running on the inside for the OS?
I love the secret function. Great idea.
That would be quite a challenge, but I'm content with it as a prop running on a 9V battery.
yes , it does got a power switch , its a small button with an orangy led
Good sir, u are my hero! I too am a huge fan of the Fallout 3 game and you have just made me and thousands of other people very happy!
really cool that pipboy looks like it's worth a lot of money
One of the quests was from New Vegas , but they had galaxy news and enclave radio.
Not on this version. No speaker installed. I've got the parts and sound files to do so, but a lot of other paid projects before I return to this one.
Hey man really nice work, i love this thing! It would also be cool if you added an MP3 player of sorts inside to play Galaxy News Radio and all the songs.
Imagine having one of these and someone hacks it just to Rickroll you
I want the plans for this sooooooo bad :) Great Job for a demo. I would stick to only the Non-game functions tough (quests, inventory and such are a lil superficious i think). But you're definately getting there. Very Nice Job!

Please make a kickstarter, I would wear this thing every day of my life.
On-screen keyboard pop-up so you can enter items you have and enter quests, then send it to be mass produced;)
Where did you get the casing for it? I'm interesting in a fun project like this :)
This is AMAZING! Would be awesome to make a new pip boy version for real life instead of just fallout.
+Gargoyle364 Thank you! This is something I've toyed with for a long time. I made a working communicator watch recently. The design for the case is inspired by fallout quite a bit:

+Mr. Volt can u plz make more and sell them
+Mr. Volt on amazon I rlly wants pip boy :(
Ever thought of revisiting this and making it with an actual geiger counter and heartrate monitor etc?

Mr. Volt+I admire your work and am gonna sub and like this video do you think you could make a tutorial to make this cause this is awesome!

@Aleator777 do you have a Indiegogo or kickstarter for this? do make or sell them?
[Karma (Very Good)] I need this sir, i need to save the world.
[failed]
Hey man all you need is a Geiger counter for radiation
Good job
dude u are amazing huge fan of the games and all but dang this is really really cool great job
Did you build this or did you make one out of the pip boy that came with fallout 4 or did you buy this
I made most of it (this was before FO4 was even announced). This is a cast of a the Pipboy 3000 clock that was the giveaway for FO3. I wired the components and wrote the UI code.
Ok dude
You switch between modes by clicking the lights, they are buttens aswell
The mode is activated by pressing the light up buttens
[speech 100%] I'll give you 3,ooo caps for the pipboy.... [worked]
Would there be a way to do this with a raspberry pi? Those things are as cheap as dirt and would be easy to use
Dude, I NEED to find out how you built that, post it on instructables!
[Barter 100] I'll give you 20 sierra madre gold bars for it
+Kingrhem Done! Just walk on over to my place. Slowly
Will you be making a new version that can pick up real radio and have an alarm clock and basicaly be a phone but its a pip boy because i keep leaving my phone on teh bus and if it was strapped to my arm i wouldnt?
P.S. The power switch is on the back of the hand
Shut up and take my money!
I scrolled down to comment that, then I saw your comment and yelled SHIT! thanks, my mom heard me.
