Same I'd love one of these. I have been researching this for like a month and thinking of building it myself, but after looking at the dosometer electronics I figured this is way out of my league lol
I’m so glad to see someone finally doing this! This is looking absolutely incredible! Please don’t give up on this project. I can’t wait to see how this will turn out! Amazing job!
Beautiful work. Love the fact that everything is actually functional and you put so much effort into the smallest details. Very nice and can't wait to see the finished product!
I’m very excited to see when you finish the files for this one. I’ve built a phone-friendly pip-boy, but the intensive build is one I’m really looking forward to. Keep up the great work!
this is such an amazing project, very well done so far! i really am excited to see it finished, cause i would definitly buy one if it would be out for sale!
This is so awesome. Great craftsmanship, man. I wouldn't mind paying a lot of money for this just as long as I get something of this quality. basically getting my money's worth.
The bottom right dial/knob that you made into a 4 way select is actually supposed to be a volume control knob, as for the dial on the left of the Pip-Boy is possibly a brightness control or as the think geek version has it as is a temporary screen switch off, but brightness makes more sense to me.
Super, super cool. The attention to detail, design, and functionality is peerless. Great job. I came across this project looking for cable retract mechanisms and saw that you were trying to find a perfect spring for the retract. May I suggest trying to source some spring steel and winding your own?
With the release of the new die-cast pip boy and the creators claiming that a holotape mechanism was “impossible” to fit in game-accurate, I came back to this video. Nice to see that this prototype, while being a mechanical mockup, is much prettier and more functional than the new mass produced release.
The new one was made to hold an iPhone for the actors and ease of production. If the wand company can get it with all the features then great. But I think dropping the holotapes was a mistake.
@@ZapWizard Of course mass production necessitates some changes, and $200 is an okay price for a decent cosplay replica. It's not meant to hold an iPhone, it has its own lcd screen. The website doesn't give closer specs but it has a clock and fm radio... From the sound of it it's a very big Casio in a fancy case with some fallout-themed animations playing. The holotape mechanism was a weird change, the interview said something about there being a tape deck, except the screen opens up. I'm a little confused why they made the entire front panel out of die cast metal, too. It all sounds like a display prop that just so happens to be wearable. Theirs has a curved screen, though! ;) Edit: It's not a Mk IV?! I thought it was! Please discard my comment, then. I'm immensely confused.
@@xxepic_swag_gamingxx5238 The general boxy shape of the design used on the TV show holds an iPhone, confirmed by several interviews with the actors. I expect that the Wand Company will once again outsource the electronics to a contract manufacturer in China, hopefully this time they will retain rights to the firmware for updates. I think $200 is quite good for the prop. Interviews with the Wand company show that they are still working on the prop design to make it a product.
@@ZapWizard That clears it up, I only know about it from the IGN store promo so I wasn't aware of the background information. I agree on the price. I hope your project is still in the works! I have been watching you since your first mechanism tests when I was a teen and now I'm in university for engineering. Your videos have been a huge source of inspiration over the years so you can be sure I will purchase one when it's finished, no matter the asking price. Wish you the best from Germany.
I'm thinking of trying to make one of my own pipboys. Like the rad counter and stuff I can do without but I'd love to have a screen, get the switches and lights to work and get some sort of computer in there and have a little pipboy. I had a look at the CAD files and they look great and basically ready to print. I was even thinking of hooking up some nintendo switch style controllers and use the pipboy as an emulation machine. Now imagine that! I hope you dont mind me using your model and mechanisms.
@@ZapWizard Ooo nice. By clean up im guessing is like a lot of filing and sandpaper work to make it look good. I'm thinking of more of a personal modded version for myself but yours is a faithful recreation which is just fantastic. I'm super interested to see how it turns out for you. I'll be sure to stick around!
Hey is there any more updates I saw your TH-cam channel and there doesn’t seem to be any follow up videos I hope there is a Completed one If you sell many of there worldwide, I’ll buy one :)
I still work on this from time to time but not on video. The biggest hurdle in the electronics has been the LCD screen. But just recently I found a 4x4" SPI LCD which may work, and so I invented quite a bit of money into a whole new set of prototype boards for this project. And I have been working on the software now, but this doesn't show well on video.
It is just a slow work in progress. Lots of layers of code, mechanics and electronics that all have to come together. I jump around on different projects a lot too.
Is there an updated video of the progress past this? I didn't see one on the playlist... Also, it wasn't clear to me if it included a flashlight or not... Very good video, the magnetic attached parts for the cushion is a brilliant idea I hadn't thought of...
@@ZapWizard I see… I might make one at some point… and if I do I’ll definitely include a flashlight part of it other than just the screen lighting up bright…
I’d even pay extra for a custom built one and holo tapes that can have real images or songs? Man you are on to something and I wouldn’t mind investing in this
I think it would be really cool if when you finish the Pip-Boy that could make the holotape games in Fallout 4. I know that it would be hard to do and I don’t want to pressure you. I just thought it would be cool! (Also if you want to gage how some of the features work then I suggest looking at old videos of the Bluetooth special addition)
I did look at a few of the games. The ones in the actual Fallout game are coded in flash, perhaps they could be converted. Otherwise since everything is on a Raspberry Pi and running Pygame, some PiGame's could be converted to run.
This is honestly really really cool I think the new version that they came out with might have more room for you to build inside of it though I really think this project is quite awesome and I hope that you create a guide for us to be able to create our own I like the Fallout 4 Pip-Boy but it's really small it might not provide enough room for all the circuitry and stuff I also like to say that they have indeed created flat CRT screens that could potentially be used for this as well as compact video and data capable tapes and tape players that would fit in there p I like the idea of a working geiger counter that is a pretty cool thing and of course a radio I wonder if there would be a way to fit all of that together I mean the technology already exists there's even small hard drives that would fit in there it would just have to be trying to get everything to go together and finding the right ones that would fit in the space properly that by itself would take a little bit of effort but it's not impossible I would love to do this myself honestly but I do not have the resources to pull such a thing off you're so close don't give up I would love to see a functional Recreation of what's in the game although I don't like Fallout 76 the Pip-Boy kit is pretty cool and allows for much more space at least from what I could see keep up the good work
Was just watching the playlist for this. It looks incredible, I stumbled across your videos when I was looking at mods for the pipboy 2000 build that came out. I’m working on building a similar design into that. With the screen and raspberry pi. I was wondering if you’d mind answering a few questions about some of the different mechanisms your going to be using, as I’ve been stumped as to how to incorporate them into my modification. I’d wanted to add them, and as I looked up how your videos for this came up and it honestly had a lot of the different things I wanted to attempt, it seems you’ve already got most of it figured out. So I was just wondering if I could get a few tips and such?
What would it take to make a custom model pipboy that plays mini cassette tapes? Somehow modeling something to hold a mini Walkman or something of that nature and connecting to a built in speaker for the pipboy model?
When will you finish? I’ve been waiting for a while and I’m seriously willing to buy one. Ever since we didn’t get a working screen or Geiger counter on the new pipboy by the want co I’ve been excited for this project.
I don't know. I work on projects on and off. I am working on the PCB design for the Radiation King Radio, which has code and methods I will put back into the Pip-Boy. I am not planning on making this as a kit to sell, but will be releasing the design files once complete. I am also working on the Dosimeter and updating it to use a larger geiger tube for some actual sensitivity.
So, I'm a little bit late to the party, but what if instead of the light, the holotape has the female end of a micro usb or type C charging port? Then there's a male type C inside the holotape chamber in the pip boy. Then we could have actual data transfer between the pip boy and the tape?
Just a question, are you planning to make Holotapes with the function to have data stored on and read/copied from them, and giving the Pip Boy the ability to read them?
