      @@LIONTAMER3DWell here we are in 2024 and guess which one of those cartridges is more prevalent due to import bans? They’re pretty much the same price now.

  • @koozie83
    @koozie83 4 ปีที่แล้ว +137

    I dont think anyone is suggesting that 300aac is a replacement for 5.56. They do different things. They’re better at different things. 5.56 is probably the more flexible cartridge, meaning it will do more things better than the 300aac. That being said, 300aac is absolutely better than 5.56 at some things. This is undeniable, and anyone who tries to argue the point is just plain wrong.
    If you want the best bang for your buck in terms of flexibility and bulk ammo storage, 5.56 is the way to go, and it is probably the better cartridge to start your journey with and to learn with. A direct competitor to this argument for the 5.56 is certainly 7.62x39.
    Once you’ve got some ammo stored away and know what you’re doing with your carbine, now you can start looking into different cartridges that might give you an edge in certain situations. Notice that I didn’t say you should get rid of your 5.56 or 7.62x39.
    The argument “if there’s still a threat, just shoot it more until it isnt a threat” is a straw man argument. Using that logic, we should all be carrying .22lr pistols. The ammo is far cheaper and more widely available, especially now. The cartridge is far more easily controllable compared with larger calibers. If you shoot a threat with it, there’s a chance it’ll make them stop. And if they don’t, you just shoot them until they do. So why aren’t we all carrying .22lr? Because it is less effective per shot than pretty much ANY larger caliber.
    Lets be realistic here. Tired of people framing information in a way so as to to back up their own opinions rather than discussing the facts objectively and with logic and reason.

The ENTIRE point of 300 blackout is to run it subsonic with a suppressor. It’s not cheap, but it is quiet as hell and defeats body armor. Plus it works with AR’s and the only difference is the barrel. If you only have the money for a couple AR’s just stick to 5.56. If you have the cash get a 300 blackout with subsonic ammo and a suppressor.

    I use and have been using .300BO in an 8.5" AR for deer hunting in closer/brushier areas. Not the best, but put one together probably 2013ish? I run it suppressed and have taken a bunch of deer with it sub-100 yards. Using factory ammo, both subsonic and supersonic, it's been great. I'm also a reloader with components to reload. To echo your points, now is definitely not the time to get into a caliber like this. For limited plinking and some hunting, it's a decent round, but doesn't really excel at any one thing and it's still way more pricey than comparable and better calibers.

    • @jamesnewton485
      @jamesnewton485 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Christian Grest--Being that you're an owner of the 300 BO I really appreciate your honesty. Regardless of weapon or caliber there's a lot of people who refuse to admit any down side to owning the weapon they are obsessed with. The fact is there is no weapon or caliber that doesn't have a downside to owning it. Example: I bought a Ruger LC9 in 2012 for my CC weapon. Great pistol. I've had no issues with it. Accurate, comfortable to carry and it finally jammed after running just over 1000 rounds through it, including nasty dirty steel case ammo. It will eat anything I load in it. BUT as much as I love my LC9 it has a problem, the trigger pull is way too long. I've gotten used to it after 8+ years but it still sucks. Galloway has a kit to shorten the pull and Im thinkin about it. But may buy a new LC9 since theyre striker fire now.😁. Im a Ruger fan because Ive never had any issues with them. Even had a 1992 P85 9mm that was great to shoot and never had any problems with jamming. Id like to try other pistols like Springfield or Glock but past experience leads me to Ruger. I do have rock island 1911 but it was given to me. Really like it too and also no problems except for shooting cost and getting used to breaking down a 1911. Big 'ol spring was a bit of an issue at first. Sorry everybody, for the rambling comment.

    to be fair the reason its good, is because in home defense when you dont have ear protection having quiet ammo and a quiet gun is a blessing, moreover if you're using it for home defense especially if you are inexperienced the shorter length will help you to not get caught up on things. the fact of the matter is that for a lot of people .300 blk is a useful and viable answer to home defense, and as far as ammo goes, chances are very high that you will use less that a magazeen so if you're keeping say 90 rounds for home defense and buying some whenever you want to practice at the range that is perfectly fine. it may not be the be all end all for societal collapse but in its niche it does a very good job and has features that make it beneficial both to experienced individuals and newcomers alike.

I have a suppressed AK pistol and i still am better and faster with my 300 because im just more familiar with the AR platform period. Its expensive now. But back when we were at 42 cents a round it was a good tradeoff vs expense caliber. My 300BO is my kitchen sink and whats next to my bed. Quetier that supersonic 5.56 and the short barrel matters. If you can effectively clear rooms with an M16 sized rifle, you would do it even better with an SBR. Thats just physics. I wouldnt get into the caliber now. The 300 BLK is more versatile than a 5.56 if you use it for other things than just tactical use. It is extremely quiet with a suppressor. When you handload, you can make a shitload of ammo, and its cheaper than buying it, so his analogy is limited. Having a shorter barrel helps with clearing rooms if its in tight spaces, but yeah, practicing the artform is more important.

  • @datboi9374

    My uncle is a textbook example of what you're talking about. $6k+ invested in two suppressed PDW's, had them for ~2 years and shot them maybe four times. Lives 15min from the range but never goes bc he has so little .300 ammo. Has ~5k rounds of 5.56 but never uses it bc it's ballistically inferior and a waste of time. He doesn't have more than a few boxes of any given type of .300, so his zero is constantly shifting due to changing ammo types every mag, and he has no idea what is/isn't reliable.
    If you have a shitload of money to blow or all of the reloading components in hand, .300blk is probably great. Otherwise you're just going to end up training 1/2 as often (or 1/3 with subs) for a marginal increase in ballistics.

Good accuracy out to 100. I will say this though I didn't get into guns to save money or because it's an economical hobby lol. Right now 300 is about 60 cents a round for supers. I carry a 9 in 300 with a law folder as my truck gun with usually 6 mags. Folded it can fit in a laptop case. I can carry it into stores, restaurants, hotels without a second look and still have 1200 foot pounds energy at the muzzle, right on par with a full size 5.56. it wouldn't be a good cal. First video I’ve seen of yours. Actually watching after just making a purchase on a .300 AAC Pistol and this was the first video I found when looking for suggested ammo lol. I bought it just cause I wanted it, didn’t have a AR Pistol and 5.56 is less effective from a short barrel. I don’t get the few comments trashing you. I thought you articulated your point well and it was a coherent argument.
    Over the last year and a half my personal philosophy has rapidly become “own every caliber that you can and all the ammo you can and you’ll never not have something to shoot when the wolf comes to the door.” I was exclusively 5.56/.30-30/.30-06/.45ACP/.357 Mag guy before covid. Since then I’ve expanded to owning pistols and rifles chambered in 9mm, .40S&W, .300AAC, 7.62x39mm, .25-06 and maybe a few more. I found this to be a good way to diversify in case any one type of ammo experiences a shortage. That said, you could make an argument that you can simply own 5.56 and 9mm (as an example) and buy every round you can find and store it. That is one feasible way to go. But I have found it useful and honestly just fun expanding into multiple calibers for the sake of having them, even if it is “just in case”. That said, I have limited experience with .300AAC but from everything I’ve read, the defense of .300AAC seems to be superior performance and stopping power out of short barrel AR systems when compared to 5.56NATO which technically has a peak performance out of a 20” barrel. There are other benefits that you mentioned such as suppression, etc... but for me the benefit was the performance and punch from a short barrel.
    All of that said, since I am inexperienced shooting the caliber I could end up being wrong. And your video was well thought out, informative and I appreciate the info. Thanks again!

    What a rarity, someone on TH-cam that tells you why you shouldn't buy something. Love it!
    In all fairness, all ammo is expensive and all ammo is hard to find right now. Very very few people that own guns have a combat load of any caliber on hand ever. Most people live box to box.
    Comparing cost of 300 to an AK depends heavily on whether you already own an AK. For AR15 owners (pre covid) it would be far less expensive to buy 300 BO ammo and a barrel for your AR15 than an AK (new mags, ammo, training etc)
    Subsonic 300 is unequivocally stupid. Requires a different buffer and spring, adjustable gas block or enlarged gas port and has the muzzle energy of 45 not to mention 200 grain 30 cal bullets are designed to expand at supersonic speeds. Fancy ice pick ya got there ;)

      MOST subsonic ammo is stupid. Have you seen the Maker rex solid copper 220gr or the lehigh 194gr? They are nasty and do expand at subsonic velocity. If your 300 blackout does not cycle subs and supers with the same standard carbine buffer then your barrel manufacturer sold you an out of spec gas port. On the supersonic front, an 8.5" 300 blackout with 110gr vmax or barnes has the same muzzle energy as a 14" 5.56 w/ 55gr m193. So if you are wanting a short, compact platform, 300 blackout is the way to go.
