  • Another mini road trip that's also suitable for cyclists, through Kentish Towns & villages, each offering something different.
    The route is circular, and we start at Hollingbourne, just off junction 8 of the M20 motorway, but you could choose Faversham off junction 6 of the M2. If you're cycling, there's plenty of options too.
    From Hollingbourn we travel a short distance to the Market village of Lenham, with free parking in the old market square. Next, we head on a little further up the A20 to Charing, with its quaint high street, the ruins of an Archbishop's palace and a memorial to Frederick George Coppins VC.
    We then head north to the movie set that is Chilham, a beautiful hillside village that takes you back in time, before we head on to the historic Faversham, that will make a great base if you want to do this at a slower pace. From the bustle of Faversham, we take you to the peace of Oare, and Oare marshes where you can pick up the Saxon Shore Way. Our final stop takes us on to Newnham, a quaint little village, with its country pub, before we return to Hollinbourne. A journey of around 40miles/65kms that will be a full day, but enjoyable

    Thanks for the quick look around Lenham, the place looks very pretty. Thankful my ancestors were of the Yeoman class so didn't have dealing's with the workhouse. There's Stedman relations of mine buried in St Mary''s church yard.
    Very enjoyable video, l must save it.

      Hey Michael,
      I thought you might like it, a little glimpse of the place, and it's fighting against overdevelopment, which is a real shame.
      Cheers,
      Gary & Janis

    A beautifully filmed and produced video - and I have been through many of these villages, but since Covid, have been more or less exiled in New Zealand, so desperately missing the historic depth of the UK. Amusingly ( if I may ) during my last trip - 2018, I was surprised to find that many of these narrow roads are also bus routes !
    I cannot recall which village our double decker bus was approaching, but a large SUV coming from the other direction refused to give way. Two hours later, several police cars and a great deal of shouting, we were on our way - too stupid for words :)
    Thank you once again - so much to see and enjoy in Kent !

      🙏 Thanks so much - Those country lanes can be fun. We've a video in the works from the Medway valley, which should land in the next 3 - 4 weeks (Once the current Iceland series has finished), which you should enjoy. Then there's some other a little further afield in Kent, but I don't want to give too many spoilers. Take care, stay tuned.

      @@OurWorldForYou Oh, I say, how interesting, and I will certainly keep an eye out. With some research on the go, I spent some time in the Chatham Dockyards, with it`s significant and important place in British Naval History, based along the Medway for centuries.For anyone visiting Rochester, I would suggest allowing some time for Chatham Dockyard - there is so much to see and learn, and there is a pleasant and regular bus ride between both, with points of interest indicated along the way :)
      Good ho !!

      Ahhh Chatham Dockyard, such a wonderful place; we love it there. Hopefully, we'll return sometime soon. Our Medway video touches on it, as we already have a video on our visit. Did you get to visit the Chatham Naval Memorial on the hilltop overlooking the town? Or get to see Upnor on the opposite banks of the Medway? Both very interesting places.
      Anyway, take care - Gary

      @@OurWorldForYou Hmm, I most likely did, but as a Medieval Historian I would visit many places of interest, often accessing relevant material for college lectures and so on,so I don`t always remember every town or village en route as it were :)
      Jolly good !

    I used to live in Charing in the early 60s where my dad was one of the village policeman and on summer Sundays where the roundabout is now it was a T junction where the village policeman would direct traffic to prevent hold ups. After Charing we moved to Pluckley.

    • @OurWorldForYou
      @OurWorldForYou  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, you haven't moved a million miles, have you?😀 And why would you? Deep in Darling Buds country. I can just image the scene with your father; it's the cars to be honest, the Austin's, Morrises, Worsleys, Rovers, and the occasional Jag' I hope you've some old photo's of your day in uniform. Thanks for taking the time to comment - stay safe, stay well.

      @@OurWorldForYou as a police family we moved after 5 years and after Pluckley we moved to Gravesend and I currently live in Eastbourne

      I guess a bit of a shock moving to Gravesend from Pluckley, mind you my mother lived at Istead Rise, just a few miles from the Centre of Gravesend and that was very different. Now, I can't believe you defected to East Sussex 😀

      @chasbell4510 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I met my future wife in Gravesend in 1973 and then she came to Eastbourne to attend Teacher training college and I followed her to Eastbourne in 1975, we married in Gravesend in 1978 and made our home in Eastbourne. I was born in High Hamden and still regard Tenterden as my home town.

    • @OurWorldForYou
      @OurWorldForYou  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So I guess if we cut you through, there's Kent on one side, and East Sussex, on the other (Kent in a slightly larger font.) Did you catch our video on Tenterden? That might bring back some memories too. Once Lockdown has eased, and I can travel more freely, we've plans to cover more of the UK, focusing at first in the south-east. You never know we might make it as fat as Eastbourne. 😀

    Hello Our World! We are gonna be in Dover on a cruise from 7am to 7pm. Im curious what type of road trip or train you would recommend hopping to take in the best of Kent.

    • @OurWorldForYou
      @OurWorldForYou  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay, not much time, you've plenty of options, and we have videos on most of them. Not really a road trip, but Dover Castle is interesting (th-cam.com/video/KTJdZ9hkD5o/w-d-xo.html) or you can follow the A20 southwest towards Folkestone (and London) Folkestone's a real creative hub (th-cam.com/video/K2strq8L-Z8/w-d-xo.html & th-cam.com/video/8M2bTRpa-oE/w-d-xo.html) and onto Hythe (th-cam.com/video/D5zexbRU5YQ/w-d-xo.html) and pick up the Romney Marsh road trip (th-cam.com/video/whQuX0VGYc4/w-d-xo.html & th-cam.com/video/0U9wKPDZFqI/w-d-xo.html), not missing Dungeness (th-cam.com/video/P1SOwFUduZI/w-d-xo.html).
      Or you can head North towards Deal (th-cam.com/video/3ICDPJ548z4/w-d-xo.html), Ramsgate (th-cam.com/video/Pv9ZLYULt6s/w-d-xo.html), Broadstairs (th-cam.com/video/h9s4IH9wFu0/w-d-xo.html) & Margate (th-cam.com/video/gSmK6hu4LJI/w-d-xo.html)
      I hope some of that's useful, either way have a great time.
      Stay safe, stay well

      @@OurWorldForYou thank you! would we be better doing any of those or catching a train to Canterbury? We want to experience a great english countryside and cool small village.

    • @OurWorldForYou
      @OurWorldForYou  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In that case, the Romney Marsh tours, and Appledore is a beautiful small village, you'll pass plenty of others too. A train to Canterbury is a good idea, because parking can be a challenge & expensive. (Need to get a video together for that!.) When are you heading to Dover? We've a few more trips/videos planned over winter, and some around that area (Alkham Valley and the like)

      Great, a nice time of year to come. We'll have a few more road trips, and I'll make sure we cover the villages outside Dover. If you like James Bond, perhaps read Moonraker (very different from the film), based around that area of the Kent coast.
