My school runs 10 users off one PC with Windows Server 2007, that has i7 870, 6GB DDR3 and a GT 210. That PC is really slow, but the cool thing is the ability to run multiple users at the same time.

I recommend first installing the free standalone Hyper-V server. Then install Admin Center on Win10/11 and connect to the Hyper-V server to manage it. With that done you can now install almost any version of windows as a Virtual Machine on Hyper-V. Linux can also be installed, but requires more work.

The things that are not said on this price page, is that it's just for 16 cpu core, if you want to have more core with your server, you need more licences, and let's not forget VM that also need the full core count for licensing (it's all obscure calculations), and we must also remember the need for CALs, and the license price depend on the server version. There are 3 versions of windows server, the basic one that is used in this video, sql server and exchange server that MS want to kill so everyone move to 365, but some company don't want things in the cloud. The server part of windows is a juicy business, there are licenses for everything and they are pricy.

The most common use case for Windows Server is an Active Directory domain. Most companies and schools allow you to use the same login details on all computers on their network, and even allow universal access to all your files. That's all done through Active Directory. It's more commonly known through the term domain, not to be confused with a domain on the internet. A domain is a single network of user accounts. One company might have multiple domains on their network infrastructure.

Great explanation. In my case the domain includes about 200k work machines and the active directory handles the security for everything from mail, calenders, sso control, application assignment, licensing, and much more. I personally am not in the group that manages it, but I regularly work with them so I get a good overview.

Some of the windows services explained below.
    - Active directory domain services
This is what you'll find in your school or anywhere where you can logon to every windows pc with the same username and password. Mostly manages security access control.
    - DHCP
Basically enables the server to function as a dhcp (subpart of a router) and assign ip addresses on the network.
    - DNS
Enables the server to act as a recursive domain name lookup server for the local network.
    - File and storage services
This one is used to host and manage file shares as well as workfolders if required.
    - Hyper-V
This is a hyper visor service by windows. Basically let's you host VMs, kind of like VMware.
    - Print and document services
Can manage multiple printers and make them accessible to the local network.
    - web server

In my case, i have a Core 2 Dou with just 2 gb's of ram. I installed the server 2022, and it's performs better than any lightweight Linux, or even the windows 7 (what's in these days, isn't the safest system without an antivirus). I will not say Linux does not get Malware (anyone who says otherwise is wrong). But due to how it is opensource and therefore vendors can design their own code it can be as secure as they want it to be (provided they don't install a hacked update or something like that).
I wouldn't say the majority of servers are Linux as much as I would say "half and half" since a lot of small-medium businesses use Windows since it is easier to manage day-to-day.
Linux is mostly in the backend of a lot of the sites/tools we use (especially network equipment) but most IT firms don't develop those tools the vendors do... some of those tools ironically enough run a service to software that will only run on Windows!
The bonus of Windows is that most things integrate with it for backups or logging. Getting a linux server to run with third-party management software can be a pain/ hit and miss haha.
I think Windows and Linux servers both serve their purpose. Just depends. I would not (for instance) run an LDAP server in Linux because Active Directory is sooo much better! Now if I want a service to run on a machine that doesn't need a lot of sources, it just needs to be a web server for an interface I am running (Like Unifi controllers) I run Linux :P

One key practical difference between desktop and server is that desktop editions will only allow one active user at a time but server will allow multiple. If you use RDP to connect to a desktop it will lock out any active console user and if a second RPD user connects the first will be disconnected with them being logged out or their session suspended depending on the specific configuration. Server will allow multiple users to connect over RDP at the same time with their own login and none of these will impact the console user. For this reason licensing desktop software such as Office for Windows Sever is either different, more expensive, or just not available at all outside a corporate site contract.

    Im a Server Admin
    The difference:
server is used for, well, server stuff. Like say you have a company with 10 people. You want their files to be stored in a "cloud" but dont want to used Onedrive. Then you can use Windows Server to solve it
How it works: you add each computer to a domain. Giving computers good names is smart.
Then Employee1 can login to any of your x amount of computers, and find their files provided theyre on your local network
Employee2 wont have access to employee1s files and vice versa.
You can have 100s of users that store their files.
and you can have groups. Lets say you have dep1, dep2, dep3 and dep1.1, dep1.2 and so on
you can assign users to multiple groups, create group folder etc
And like they say here, AD, thats bascially what i meant with Domain above
you can also have VMs like VMWare, HyperV or similar
I recommend server edition to server computers, not for your own pc
they use xeon cpus instead of i5 etc

You covered it well, from a perspective of why you wouldnt bother using it on a desktop at home. All of the services are really for authenticating, managing, controlling a companies computers via Active Directory, DHCP, DNS. Server also allows Windows to be able to address more RAM and cores. The one thing you did miss is the requirement for CALs and the cost associated with it for any device that uses services provided by the server, if you made the server public facing then you would need a different license

Someone else already mention this but Windows Server is a huge thing in the world of IT with Active Directory alone (which, by the way, is what is used for managing users, groups, policy administrations, etc, for many users and computers).
The costs for Windows Server licensing is so high because of the fact that it's aimed at businesses. They've changed their pricing model when Server 2016 came out to be per core now if I recall correctly. A lot of the time, though, a company that needs to license a lot of Windows Servers would usually have an agreement to get a VLK (Volume License Key) or would go through a company like CDW to purchase key or through any number of Microsoft Partnered resellers but usually when you go through a reseller (such as a MSP) you will more likely be renting the key at that point where you're paying monthly so the cost is cheaper to you short term but expensive in the long run.
Also up until about a year ago, in order for you to have remote desktop you would need to use Windows Servers and buy additional CALs (Client Access License) since only Windows Server can be enabled as a terminal server to allow more than 2 users connected at any one time. Now you could use Windows 10 Enterprise with Multi-user sessions, although pretty sure that's only an Azure thing at the moment.
But anyways, to touch on some other points, the whole point of File and Storage Services is to manage additional hard disks and creating a pool of disks and/or creating file shares. You technically don't need that service installed to share files and folders but having the services installed makes it a whole lot easier to manage which is why it gets installed on a file server. The other point of having it is if you are planning on creating shared drive or act as shared storage device with a pool of disks (similar to how TrueNAS does it, but in Windows way instead of ZFS) from which you can then create a iSCSI connection to share out to your ESXi, Hyper-V, or any other hypervisor hosts for shared storage (although in the real world, you usually don't want to use Windows as your storage device for pooled disks, you would usually use something like a Dell Compellent, HP LeftHand SAN, or Nimble since they handle data a lot better, although there is many many other solutions out there, just depends on the need of the business).
Anyways, think I've been rambling off too long as it is. But, anyways, there's a lot of us out here who works in IT that deals with this kind of OS day in and day out that watches your channel (to either learn something new, get a refresher since we've been inside the server world too long that we forgot what the desktop world is like, or just for some good laughs) so if you have questions about a server feature, just reach out.

I build a lot of temp servers for work that don’t have a production use, just built and gone in the span of about a month, so we don’t bother activating those.

Having a backup is preatty standard and easy for preatty much every kind of user but I see even power users struggle to find a convinient and suitable backup solution, withot having to code one from scratch. Especially considering how complicated it gets when you combine google backups, microsoft backups and various other services from your devices.
Would a video about backups be a good idea?
Personally, I manually back up my phone photos to the PC because I dislike the behaviour of google photos ore one drive, but then also back up my photos manually to one drive without syncing them to any device. It creates the kind of backup I want but with the negative side that I have to keep track of everything manually.

do the 321 rule. Here's what the 3-2-1 backup rule involves: 3: Create one primary backup and two copies of your data. 2: Save your backups to two different types of media. 1: Keep at least one backup file offsite. (so it doesnt just burn away with others)

I actually have been running windows server data center as a daily driver for about 2 years now. Its a real disc and the price was like 30 bucks. I have had problems but to be honest i have been able to fix all of them and at this point am gonna stick with it cause my computer doesnt support windows 11. I would think since the support date on server version ends in 2029 its worth it now for those of us who run older hardware.

Every problem i run into, i just look it up as if it was a problem with windows 10 or the hardware im using.

If I log into a server and I find the "Unplanned Restart" window I always put "Hamster fell off the wheel" to keep my coworkers guessing.

About the moment when the shutdown in the server edition did not complete immediately. This also exists in the regular version of Windows. But I still don’t understand how this system for choosing the reason for shutting down/rebooting the PC works. Even after 6 years.

I managed a very large, government Windows-based server environment for many years until I retiried and I was totally impressed with the MS server product. Active Directory and thousands of users was the most challenging we/I faced. We paid extra for immediate Microsoft engineering support and those guys/gals knew their business inside and out. Good cheer Microsoft.

I was on Windows server 2012 data center for 3 years, and its fine, its not good or bad, better or worst, its just different system for different job, even copying multiple files from multiple drives to multiple locations and drives are done way differently, it makes sense for the server and millions of users, but for workstation consumer its a pure hell.
Also Windows 10 LTSC (Enterprise) with optional N variant or generally EU version since 2018 does not have bloatware.

Neat video, as someone who has several Windows Server Certifications, you should look into setting up another VM and make a server/client system and learn about Active Directory and Group Policy, that's gonna be what the bulk of your Windows Server installs are, also, the no GUI options is what I normally install on host that need to just do Hyper-V (if the client doesn't let me use VMWare)

No, desktop experience includes themes etc
The normal install still has a GUI but no themes
You're thinking of the core version.

There is one very minor change you are very likely to miss in Server vs Client:
The frown is gone from the bugcheck screen.
NOTE: There *is* a client variation of Windows that also does has this change to the bugcheck screen - Japanese Windows

    clarifications:
windows server has no oobe and administrator is set to change password after login
most of the tools you find as exclusive are actually available as part of RSAT.
there's more than what meets the eye when making differences between WinNT and ServerNT
session functions in remote control applications are only available on server
session 0 isolation which is removed in windows 10 actually behaves like servernt (tested on win7)
some applications have checks for servernt and do changes accordingly
xp and 2003 (and earlier?) actually have kernel traps for tampering with the system product identification
this pc manage launcher opens server manager or computer manager respectively
policy differences that can be always enforced
windows 8.1 and 10 have made a couple of server only roles/features available to client windows such as hyper-v, active directory light services
remote desktop and files server stuff is partially misleading, there's administrative remote desktop and the full set, it's the same software configured differently, and there's also a basic samba file share and there's file services which is dfs, etc same ish but completely different
admin center is standalone and can be installed anywhere
there's enterprise for virtual desktops which is the only edition circa 2017 that switches to servernt, it's called serverrdsh internally and it's basically rds host in client windows without anything additional!

See cdkeys, or similar, for Windows Server keys that are as cheap as regular Windows 10/11. (Windows Server for $20, if my memory serves me correctly.)

Probably because that's not unique to windows server. Pro and Enterprise have it too
