I think it's a great idea how this video started, by separating ports from physical connections and then defining them the right way a lot of confusion can be avoided especially for beginners.
It would be better to start with explaining the networking layers. From this video, it is not clear how network devices decide which of the network protocol to use. In turn, ports are just a feature of the protocols based on IP whilst IP is far not the only protocol existing.

I must say thank you. Your channel did more than help me past some tests. Your videos helped me land a job in the field. I was in professor messers chat room the other day and multiple people told me no need to understand the TCP/IP model because it's not on the Comptia Objectives. Yet it was one of the first few questions in the job interview. Need to be extra careful who we get information from. They also asked about VLANs and Subnetting which I both learned from your channel as well as converting decimal and IP addresses into binary.

This video explains network ports pretty well. But I always like the analogy of IP address being like phone numbers and port numbers being like extension numbers: you call the phone number (IP address) to connect to the switchboard then provide the extension number (port number) to reach the person you want to call.

Your videos are amazing. I think the animations are super helpful because a lot of the time when this stuff was introduced to me it was through a bunch of definitions, and I would often times try to just memorize them. However, with the images you can just remember the picture and then when asked to explain the concept itself, you can explain what you are seeing or saw rather than a explaining a bunch of technical jargon.
It's worth adding that the limitation of 65,535 ports has nothing to do with memory or OS constraints, but rather merely reflects the fact that the TCP protocol allows only 16 bits which can be used to encode a port number.
I didn't get the second reserved list of ports that companies can own from 1000~ til 40000~.. what is that about and why is it needed? Also can I use port 80 for ftp on my computer in theory?
@@disrael2101 no, you cant use ftp in port 80 because you use it for http. why its limited to 40000 i have no idea. gotta ask ICANN i guess. edit: A registered port is a network port designated for use with a certain protocol or application. Registered ports-Ports in the range 1024 to 49151 are not assigned or controlled, but can be registered to prevent duplication.
@@tacorito1809 technically speaking, no one is stopping you from using an another type of service on a port just like how you can run a web server on a port that's not port 80. It's just about standards. The standard is to use port 80 when running a web server but you can still use an another port if you want and you will still be able to access that web server via wget/curl or your browser by specifying the port. Same is also true for ftp servers, as you will notice, most modern GUI FTP clients have port field where you can enter a specific port in case the ftp server is running on an another port (not port 21).
@@disrael2101 registered ports are usually reserved for applications that are running on the computer. The range can be changed use a command on the computer. You can have more registered ports but less dynamic ports. However, well known ports don’t change.

Unlikely, learning this is the equivalent of learning the alphabet. TCP gets very complex very fast, requiring some sort of schooling to set up and manage networks. And this video is for ipv4 which is a standard that is currently being phased out.

Torrent apps by default use 6881-6889 ports. Knowing this some internet providers will block this range of ports so that you can't access torrents. (But you can bypass it by changing the the port number in the app.) This is a good explanation how ports or their blocking works. Your firewall probably blocks all ports except the commonly used ones which are featured in the video.
