- If you like big fixed blade knives you probably own an ESEE 3 4 5 or 6. This review the ESEE 6HM is an update to the ESEE-6, with a revised handle and blade. It's still a big blade made from 1095 carbon steel- but now it removes the choil, and makes the handle more bulbous. In this review I pretend to be a bushcraft guy, and try to start a fire. Neither of which I accomplish. I drink a Dales Pale Ale- that's one thing I do.

I am absolutely not a dramatic prepper. I come from a family that growing up was paranoid about things like Y2K and the collapse of civilization. They were faked out several times... and basically it helped install a good sense of reality and hopefully a decent bullshit detector. I get that sometimes shit goes down... but I try to keep a healthy skepticism about gloom and doom.

If you look at the ESSE 6, standard survival knife version, which they now do with a sharpened top swedge, which in my opinion is a nice touch for cutting through rope which can dull the primary cutting edge quickly and it is such a menial task and so I think it was a nice touch them putting that sharpened top swedge on so the primary blade can be used for more pressing objectives, but my main point is that if you look at their standard 6 survival model the dynamics of the knife, both blade and handle are more of a full survivalist style whereas with this model you can clearly see that it's purpose is more inclined toward general camp work, and also the handle shape lends toward being able to accomplish general bush craft and food prep. For a larger knife focused toward those tasks I have mentioned I think they got the dynamics spot on. This new 6 design will also be able to carry out the majority of tasks which the original is designed for also. Great knife.

Your survival skills are off the chain Knife Bro! Never owned an Esse but I do have the Schrade SCHF56L which I really like. I have taken it on the last few backpacking trips with me and beat the shit outta it. It was easy to sharpen and kept a pretty good edge, feels great in the hand and is really cheap so when I lose or destroy it, not a huge loss. Thanks for the review Bro!
Plus that extra weight behind it is good for chopping! Yeah man... they're about $100 cheaper than this, so if you lose it- no big whoop!
Nice video. My favorite bushcraft knife would be the Esse Laser Strike. It is smaller but beafy enough to take some abuse.
Fixed blade!!!! w00t! While I am a fan of ESSE products, I'm not a fan of this knife due to the redesigned choil. With a blade length over about 4ish inches I prefer a choil. Just my personal preference. Keep'em coming bro!

Good review. However, considering the ESEE 6HM has a $160-ish price tag, I decided to buy, the very comparable, $40-ish Schrade SCHF42D & save myself about $120. And after putting the '42D through the "paces", believe me, the SCHF42D WILL do anything the ESEE HM6 can. Both the ESEE-6HM & the SCHF42D are 1095 steel, flat grind, & similar size & shape so I couldn't justify paying $120 more for the ESEE just to get an inch more blade length & micarta handle scales.
The ESEE 6 I have is 11.80 oz. and the BRK Bravo 2 I have is 13.50 oz., so I guess only a couple ounces, but it feels way heavier. And, yes, DPx did have their knives made by Rowen off and on, including the HEST that you reviewed last year. So, same place as ESEE, as you mentioned. At other times DPx had Italy make their knives.
Yeah I remember the Temperance being very light, especially when holding the Schrades. I feel like it would be very very nice if there were a cutout or two under the scales.

Right now my favorite is the Spyderco Bushcraft-UK, but I just bought the Benchmade Bushcrafter and haven't had enough time in the woods to make a decision like that as of this moment.

Hello AKB how you doing? Let me ask you something technical , i use my folding knives primarily in the kitchen. But every 6 months or so I have to take them apart to clean because of corrosion. I know you're not supposed to use folding knives in the kitchen. But it's just what we do my question is, do you know of any ceramic folding knives That resist corrosion?.
I don't know off hand of any good ceramic knives.... but the Spyderco knives like the Salt use a steel called H1, which is said to be pretty rust free.

Advanced Knife Bro the spyderco salts are supposed to be impervious to rust the h1 steel doesn't have carbon. It's nitrogen based.

I had an Ontario RAT 3 which was a great knife, but they used a less durable phosphate coating instead of the powder coat like on your ESEE 6. I have an first model Izula now with purchased micarta scales and it's a great blade for me. Mine came with a tek-lok so I can carry it horizontally. TOPS Knives has the same powder coat when I compare my Izula to the TOPS Key D.
Yeah the powdered coat on these is pretty tough. The Schrade coat wears much faster.
ESEE uses a Colombian powder coat.
Favorite bush craft knife is the one I have on me when bush crafting. Like making sharp toothpick out of regular toothpick. Or feather sticking the front of my work bench in the garage.
Reminds me of Ontario Cerberus. I have the OG ESEE 6 with coating stripped off. Great knife around campsite.
I have a computer desk in front of me made from 2x4s and it is torn up. I'm always shaving pieces off with whatever pocket knife I have on me.

sometimes, when I'm considering a knife, I check to see if you've reviewed it. If you haven't, I tend to forget about it.
I wish I had the hookup on new blades, but I don't. I have emailed several retailers... and all the major knife companies... and I usually get no response. So when I get some spare cash and it happens to coincide with some cool and under $200 knife I buy it from knife center or bladeHQ. Oh well! Gotta have 50-100k subscribers to have access like that... or know someone who owns a knife store.. I guess.
I've got a Schrade sch9n for bushcraft, though I can't find it, and an Isula II. Someday I'll get around to doing bushcraft.

Just got here today. I'm brazilian and our laws regarding guns are pretty much "fuck you" so I started looking and searching for knives for EDC (among other things) and I found out your channel when looking for a review on the Ganzo. Loved it. Subbed. Bad thing that blades cost a lot down here (1k for a spyderco, zero tolerance or benchmade / 160 bucks for the Ganzo Firebird).

Zt-9 bayonet is my favorite bushcraft knife because people think I’m crazy when they se me using it
I use the ESEE Junglas with a BRKT Aurora. I like having a big blade and carry a small one with it. Sometimes use the BRKT Survivor and Aurora combo. Kinda disappointed in the Survivor though, first time battoning with it ended with a chip in the blade. I wasn't impressed... The ESEE Junglas I beat the hell outta of it and never had a chip.
The Junglas looks like an excellent chopper- and seems like it has enough weight behind it too. Gotta love those Aurora handle options. Which one do you have?
Black canvas micarta scales with A2 steel just plain Jane one. But I like black canvas my Survivor is the same, also have a BRKT Foxriver II in black canvas matte. But anyone looking for a tough knife you can't beat an ESEE, well that's just my opinion I have the Junglas, ESEE 4, and an Izula. I'll have an ESEE 6 one of these days just never got around to getting one yet.

Both are great knives; it is just matter of personal preferences...
Yeah basically this... people hold and use the knifes differently... These may make sense to some users, but not others. I tried to give my impression of these changes, and hopefully it might steer someone in a different direction or might like what I don't.
I have this knife and I love it, you're right about different users .....I have not experienced any of the uncomfortable issues that you you described. In general, I despise a finger choil so I have avoided the original Esee line, but I may pick up a 6 just for kicks.
+shootermcmillan i was like you 10 years ago; i despited the finger choil BIG TIME... But i have changed a bit with ages; now i like it on "certain blade shapes over 6 inches" (if it is done right, it really help with "precision work"), on shorter knives still make no sense to me.
I didn't say that the HM6 have any "uncomfortable issues", i like the knife very much; it is one of the knives "with traditional shape" that i like the most to be honest.
But like i said, i like the traditional ESEE6 even more (not only because i have used it for more than one decade, and it has become like an extension of my hand).
The new 6HM handle is "to shallow" for the shape/size of my hand; after some hours of use my hand feel fatigued. On the other hand... The traditional ESEE6 handle is thinner but higher, and my finger "naturally pinch it with a perfect ergo" (i have shaped it to a perfect fit OFC).
A friend of mine FEEL THE OPPOSITE. We have shown to each other the respective "fits"; and yes... The 6HM handle fit him better BIG TIME; useless to say that he is really happy with it.
Both model will serve you EQUALLY WELL.
I really don't think that "one is better than the other, in the over all performances"; it is just a matter of "personal preferences" (and be really picky, as any avid knife user become after a while).
Randals adventure themselves have even said they never worried about knives with a 90 degree spine because they had always just used the edge closest to the handle to strike a Ferro rod. I will use the spine for that purpose if it's there but if your knife steel is so weak and soft it dulls the edge from using it that way maybe get a better knife. Js
Well... their new Esse PR4 has a bare 90 degree spine edge- so at some point they revised their logic. Also I caught shit for even attempting edge striking a rod on some of my schrades on video.

MMM... Esee knives are great, but I wonder what sort of handle would suit you the best. I like the handle of the CM better... I mean I assume, at least for how I handle fixed blades. And it ain't a light knife either. Like someone mentioned elsewhere in these comments... schrade makes some about 100 less... but those tend to be heavier. I'd like to try the ESEE 5, because that looks like a nice one.

I much more appreciate the original Essee 6 with the choil. I fact i have been looking for a knife just like it but in a more premium steel. But i also have an essee 4 in stainless which allows me to take it to the wetlands without crazy rusting. and for awesome chopping the junglas is amazing. I know I sound like an Essee fan boy but I collect a lot of knives.

That "die alone in a ditch" comment made laugh til my face hurt! I actually use a folding knife to craft things in the Bush, opinel #9 usually, paired up with a chopping/heavy-use tool like a tomahawk or hatchet. Since I use a folder in the bush the bushcrafters took away bushcraft membership card. I do carry a fixed blade but mostly use it for food prep, the condor scalper is the one I'm currently using.
It's not that often but I get occasionally really harsh comments out of no where. Like one time a guy called me a poor piece of white trash because I said "shit." Yeah man... fuck off. I am going to review an Opinel in the future... people have been asking me to for a while- and I think it's good to have a well rounded understanding of lot of different brands... especially one like Opinel, that's cheap, and people swear by.
Despite what you see on this channel... I use primarily my estwing or Kukri for chopping. While this sort of knife is cool. I find it too light for chopping but too heavy to use for long periods of time. Some people don't subscribe to that way of thinking... and since I do like knives... I enjoy getting a chance to use knives like this, if only because it helps inform of other ways of thinking. Once I read a section in a camping book from the 60s about the most prudent knife... a 3 inch folding knife, because it's compact and light... and bring a camp axe if you need to process wood. Now I will say... if you need to split wood for fire wood... camp axes aren't the best... and a longer bladed knife (like this) would come in handy for batoning through them, short of carrying a portable maul. Unfortunately most of my backpacking prohibits camp fires, and my car camping... well I usually have access to camp site approved firewood.
I know this was a long answer, but I felt like I might need to explain myself, but also agree with you.

I don't see how you can assert that. This picture shows there are clear differences. One knife has quite a bit more metal.

I mean maybe they use the same blanks and then remove a bunch of metal... but one clearly has more steel on it than the other. They are the same series... so yes the blade is similar but they are not exactly the same knife. There's the jimping... the much slimmer handle

fixed blade knives... the most practical , impractical knives ever . I have one just in case i ever need to use it in that 1:100000 scenario, where I get lost in the woods somewhere remote.
I've mostly carried folders all my life. I take fixed blades along now, but I'd be a liar if I ever said that I needed a big fixed blade to do real work. I prefer a 10" blade or larger for yard work, but basically anything from about 3.75-10 sees the least amount of use of any of my blades. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy screwing around with them.

Say Heah, Yeah I like Choils. Infact on 6" and above, Infact I had a Custom made in a 4" BushCraft Knife made with a choil its its my All time Fav. but George K that used the G.A.K.A.. Logo. (R.I.P.). Anyhow I L@@Ked hard to find a 6" blade that I approved with a choil. I got one. I had a Rodent 6 thinned down and the top guard taken off. Now it L@@K's like a Ratmandu on steroids. The Ratmandi is also one of my Fav's and I even have it in the INFI Steel. But yeah, I almost went with Essee which my friends have and like very much. But I'm glad I went with my Modde Rodent 6.,,.

I don't consider it as one. I think a 7"-7 1/2" Blade will start as a Chopper, But yeah, My Modde Rodent 6 for a 6"+ blade, Yeah, I defenetly would use it as a good survival knife. It's definitely a well built knife, and its one of my Fav's.,,.

You don't scrape fire steel with a moving knife that knocks away the shavings. You hold the knife still and pull the fire steel across the knife, back towards you, throwing the fire sparks into the tinder that is not getting knocked around.
