Svord Von Tempsky Ranger Bowie Knife Review. Or STOP THE HAMMERING!

  • The Svord Von Tempsky Bowie Knife was named and modeled after a dead dudes famous side piece. The internet is full of stories about the exploits of Dr. Gustvas Von Tempsky the VIII, DDS, MD, Esq- and this one attempts to tell it again. I hammer the holy crud out of the knife, cuss some, and offer my thoughts on what I think I want out of a big ass knife. I don't think I come to a conclusion- but this channel is a journey- a road trip if you will. Except the doors are locked, and the car is headed toward a brick wall. To support the channel buy some stuff from my Amazon links:

    "As society moves away from starting wars with natives who resort to cannibalism because they're sick of colonialism, we demand more from the knives we use less." - AKB 2018
    The first part of this quote could be straight from a Rage against the Machine or SoaD song.

      It took me 6 hours to write this script... just reading, looking at photos, and trying to figure out an angle. The man may have been an adventurer, or whatever- but it seemed like he died a pretty foolhardy way. I figured the context adds an additional backdrop to the dumb beating on the wood.

    Entertaining and very enjoyable. I'm sure the fidget spinner and copper/titanium lanyard bead crowd will disapprove, but they can go do deep squats on a pointy stick.
    Keep up the fun content.

    Alright... I'm gonna be honest. I think in a "survival" situation (or any situation) it would take a lot less energy to carry an ax than to beat on a log for 3 minutes with a knife to split it once. Anyway... the abuse tests are fun to watch. Thanks for another great vid.

    Svord puts out some good knives. They don’t always have the greatest finish but the steel is exceptional. I have a few of them including a Golok and a couple of hunting knives. The Golok has that great forged/tempered look that your Bowie does. (The colors near the hilt)

  • @grumpyoldwizard
    @grumpyoldwizard 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have 4 different models of Svord knives that I bought years ago. They are pretty good knifes and good performers. I have a Golok by them that has the rainbow like forge marks on it. You won’t be disappointed if you give one a try. They are not all super expensive.

    I’ve always thought this looked like a cool blade. I never wanted to shell out the cash for it though. That wood handle took a hell of a beating! You know, if 3 in 1 oil isn’t pretentious enough, you could turn that blade into a spear, skewer baby seals on your next wilderness outing and squeeze the oil out of them. I did that last Thursday and the oil Is much less smelly than 3 in 1

I think I agree with the "no music" more. Oh well, nothing I can do about it now. I hate about 98% of TH-cams music library- and most of the stuff I like I used. I like it. The shape is reminiscent of the original Bowie. Good handle length, good blade length, nice and thick. Good for combat fighting, or hunting/camping. Oil is oil, but if your really worried, use a food grade mineral oil if your processing wild game. Protects the blade from rust, and does not hurt the leather sheath. I'd probably have my local leather goods guy make me a sheath, rather than pay for their sheath.

    What we see here is a rare capture of the "reverse batoning" technique where you hold the piece of wood you want to break down and strike it against the back of a knife.

    I’d love to see a review of the tree that stump came from. I mean that thing has taken a lot of abuse!

    That Aranyik looks like it would be a good bear fighter.

      I have a lot of that review shot- unfortunately their online store has been closed forever. I like that one a lot.

      Advanced Knife Bro, that's unfortunate. I went back to your last Aranyik review and the web site after seeing it. My 1st draft comment was something like "Amazing, that looks like an Orc sword get us a promo code" but it sounded to bossy. I think I will be stalking Ebay for the Hybrid Machete.

      To be honest I have no connection with them at all... a subscriber once said he ordered an Aranyik- and since I’ve bought two. They’re pretty affordable as is... heavy as shit though

    • @dgray7537
      @dgray7537 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heavy is fine. I was more curious the issue some people had with the handles coming apart.

    I see your point about how centering and other fit and finishing issues aren't really a functional issue, but given that most people who collect knives are interested in knives being more than simple utilitarian tools, it makes sense that we'd want things to be aesthetically pleasing.
    I mean if we didn't care, we'd all buy one $50 knife and be done with it, never watching reviews or getting into designs, etc.

      You know they would take a look at it, then toss it into a case and move onto the next one, only to pull it out once in a blue moon to make some comparison.

      You forget that I have spent thousands of dollars on knives. I own and buy the same shit as everyone else. My perspective is different. You see my focus is on general hand feel, durability, lockup, and looks. I have 20 dollar beautifully machined knives and 200-300 with imperfections and vice versa. If I ever get to the point where an off centered blade makes me mad or I flame a company via social media because the top swedge isn't perfect- then I'm done. I don't get how a off centered blade causes someone to be "done" with a company. That is just not what I'm about. The good thing is there are hundreds of other TH-cam channels, forums, and reviews that focus on those things.
      Now sure... if I spent $500 on a Production knife and what I was looking for was an occasional pocket carry to resell in 5 months... then yeah, maybe. But I'm not that dude. All of my knives from the $12 Sanrenmu to the $500 are functional tools, that I can appreciate for various reasons.

      Advanced Knife Bro I gotcha. I didn't mean to come off as antagonizing, if that's what you got from my first comment. I'm just voicing my thoughts on why most folks do seem to care about things like centering. But I completely understand where you're coming from now.

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope... Just clarifying my comments. I stopped buying knives more than $200. I just don't find anything in them that justifies that price... so maybe that's my version of off centered blades. I mean I do see some knives I want over that price point, but I just can't appreciate the tolerances that other people can. I guess all I'm trying to say if that we all get different things out of the hobby... I buy cheap and expensive blades, and I'm willing to let smaller imperfections slide if I really like the knife. I like the discussion- thanks!

    Christ on a crutch! You beat the ever lovin hell out of that bastard. Bravo! Now how does that knife cut tomatoes? I am more of a tomato slicer myself and feel that was inadvertently left out of the video.

      Let's call it a working edge. Those beefy convex edges hold up well to this bullshit, but aren't tomato friendly.

      Advanced Knife Bro you’ll be sorry if you never have the chance to USE a Rockstead. I often use mine by taking it out of the safe, shaving a few arm hairs, and then repolishing it with a microfiber cloth.
