This new season is going to depend on the progression of Lively and Hardy. It would be great to see Ommax turn into a good 3 and D roll player too. I’m not worried about Klay working well with Luka and Ky, he’s the perfect type of player for them and doesn’t have to be the number 2 guy anymore.
Even if Klay Thompson is totally "washed" on defense, it won't matter. People say Luka & Kyrie are terrible on defense, and they went all the way to the finals. When it comes down to it, Kidd can set up a rotation where these three players play most of their minutes when only two of them are on the floor. For example, Luka cooks the first quarter almost always. After 3 minutes, sub out Kyrie for your best PoA defender. Grimes or Naji will likely be that guy. You can literally run any combination of Luka, Kyrie, Klay, & Grimes 1-3 and be fine. When it's Kyrie's time to run the offense, sub out Luka, Klay will still have an elite playmaker to catch passes. This gives Kidd more options, and that's all that matters. Looking at depth Guards - Luka, Kyrie, Hardy 2/3 Combos - Klay, Grimes, Exum Forwards - PJ, Naji, Kleber Center - Lively, Gafford, & Powell The Mavs are a much improved team from last year.
I also think even a bad defender can be the best version of themselves for a 2-3m stretch. Both Kyrie and Luka played some of the best defense of their careers throughout this last year. It wasn't every minute of every game, but they don't need to be that way for ~40m every game, just need to lock in during key stretches.
Why? We replaced DJJ with Naji and THJ with Grimes. Klay is also ok on the defensive end. We have no problem on the wing. Actually I see no real weakness anymore if Klay performs offensively and Naji builds on his past season.
The Mavericks need to take a hard look at how to keep Luka healthy for the next ten years. Luka was just beat up and worn out by the time the championship series started. That series also showed that the Mavericks cannot beat the Celtics with the Luka bully drives into the lane as the main offense. They need to add more five out with everyone moving to get open shots for Luka, Kyrie, Klay. and all the other players. Playing defense in the NBA is purely a matter of effort. Luka, Kyrie, and Klay can make the higher effort to play better defense but that means they will need more minutes in the second and third quarters that they can rest so they can be at full power for the end of the games. Maybe the way to do that is to only have Luka or Kyrie on the floor for the first three quarters at a time. Start Luka, Klay, PJ, Lively. and Marshall. Then Kyrie comes in after six or seven minutes and Luka sits, and Luka and Kyrie switch off every six or seven minutes until the last part of each game. With the players that the Mavericks have added they are a much deeper team and Kidd should make a lot more substitutions to keep everyone fresh.

We're only asking him to give you close to 20 pts a game which he has done his entire career. Easy peasy! 20 pts a game from him is enough to win you a title.

Except Powell is trash
We probably need another wing defender but I like the moves. Hopefully Hardy and Omax take a step forward this year as well
