Strasburg Rail Road: A Day with the Doodlebug

  • Weekdays in early November is the time of year where business for the Strasburg Rail Road is a bit laid back. To accommodate the smaller crowds, this is the time of year the railroad desides to operate their unique railcar #10 on excursions from East Strasburg to Leaman Place. This little doodlebug was originally built as a passenger car in the 1880's for the Lancaster, Oxford and Southern Railway, a long-gone narrow gauge operation. The car was then overhauled to be self-propelled in the early 20th century when passenger service decreased. It has since been converted to standard gauge and has been in operation on the SRC for over 50 years. We see #10 at Paradise Lane, Esbenshade Road, Cherry Hill, Carpenter's Crossing and Leaman Place. Enjoy!
    Special thanks: Paul Koprowski

These may be the best way to get a scenic tourist railroad going. Either finding one to restore or building it from a car as the originals were. As old retired rails are often not rated for heavy loads anymore, this may pass safety limits. Rail cars are cheaper to fuel and maintain than locomotives. They are a novelty and nostalgic for the tourist.
Expansion1 = restoring another car for 120% more paying passengers. Expansion 2 = light industrial locomotive and cars after the business plan is solid.

The car was actually originally built for the Chateaugay Railroad in New York.

Is it just me, or does it sound kinda like a helicopter? What sort of engines did these have? (Thanks for this video, BTW -- I love it!)

My son loves trains 🚆🛤🚋🚞🚝🚊🚉🚈🚇🚅🚄🚃🚂 especially railcars like that one he thinks they are highly underrated rail transportation vehicles and should all be preserved, restored, and put back into service on lines that are not used anymore carrying both passengers and mail. He also thinks that Siemens, Progress Rail, or any other company that builds railroad equipment should build clones of these and the departments of transportation should rebuild lines that were abandoned and/or removed and run these on them.
