- Last week I had the opportunity to shoot 2 of the remaining 3 PRR "Doodlebug" rail cars in service. On Saturday, July 30 the 4666 was used in conjunction with the RailPace magazine picnic at the Allentown & Auburn RR. Despite some appalling weather, the car put on a good show powered by its 6 cylinder Hamilton diesel engine, installed by the PRR in place of the original Brill gas engines in 1942. On Friday, August 5, the 4662 was scheduled for two regular runs out of Greenbank, DE to Mt. Cuba on the Wilmington & Western. 4662 has been repowered twice, PRR replaced the original Winton gas engines with Cummins diesels. The W&W is difficult to chase in this segment, but I managed a few shots. Herewith are the results.

I hope they are raising money to restore these two motor cars to tip top shape. They are treasures.
Marcus Kostolich 4666 is in the process of being repainted, as well as having the roof refurbished.
I have been fascinated by motorcars and RDC's. Wish they were still running today.
Via rail still has a couple of RDCs in regular service in Sudbury ontario, Canada
I would love to use them as.M.o.w cars
These run at the Allentown and Auburn railroad in Kutztown PA and the Wilmington and Western in Wilmington Delaware if you want to catch a ride
When I was a kid 8-9 years old (now 69) there was a doodlebug that passed through Newkirk, OK and took the spur to Kaw City, OK. I never got closer than 300 yards to it but was totally fascinated. Grandma's house was near the Santa Fe line and I played on the tracks doing all kinds of *dangerous* stuff and now those are precious memories. The Doodlebug ceased operation and the Kaw City spur became a storage track. Once we climbed a string of cars and released the brakes and rode a couple of miles to the Newkirk country club, got them stopped and ran home. We didn't get caught. Kaw City spur long gone and Kaw reservoir inundated the town. Thanks for posting this video.
THAT IS SO COOL. TOU WERE LUCKY. MY HOUSE IS near some csx tracks where the ol b&o used to run because that where me and my family lives
I managed to grab a joiner and a spike from the now-abandoned Cement Industrial Track in Dayton, Ohio by my old childhood home during a recent visit to see my family. There's quite a bit of history of that line. Look up the Cincinnati, Lebanon, and Northern (CL&N). That particular segment that runs from Linden Ave. to the Tenneco plant in Kettering was part of an interurban line before the CL&N bought the right-of-way after the Great Dayton Flood of 1913. Their original alignment along the Great Miami River was abandoned, but a small segment was left to serve the NCR plant. The line that the CL&N branched off was part of the Dayton-Xenia PRR line, and plans have been made to turn the PRR line and CL&N line into a bike trail to connect with the current Iron Horse Trail bike path network for the area.
Old doodlebugs are just amazing, especially these Pennsy ones! :)
Sounds like they use a gasoline pony motor to crank over the diesel?

4666 (towing a P70 coach) was the last scheduled train between Camden and Trenton on June 28, 1963 on the Camden & Amboy PRR line (which would be reincarnated as NJ Transit's RiverLine in 2004).
Those Doodlebug Rail Cars from the Pennsylvania Railroad look absolutely incredible!

My family and I rode in a doodlebug that was run on trackage owned by the Black River & Western scenic railroad between Ringoes and Lambertville, NJ. This runs, in good part, parallel to the Delaware River. I think this ride we'd did was around 1977-1979 ?.... I was a kid then. That trackage is now defunct, between Ringoes and Lambertville, as far as I know....
That was the 4666.
They are working on restoring those tracks to Lambertville

Great to hear !! A lot has changed from what I understand, at BR&W. The main station is now in Flemington, versus Ringoes now ? I rode their RS-1 from Lambertville up to Ringoes, in the cab with the crew. This was '91 or '92.
I was a '70s kid, and very much remember the railroad that way.... I used to love the railcar gift shop at Ringoes. We were there every Sunday after Thanksgiving for years.... Loved Turntable Junction, the hobby shop, the fudge shop....
That got cast aside in favor of the outlet stores. A shame. But great memories !!
@@craigfazekas3923 wow sounds like you've been around the line alot. It's real neat you got to be present for some of its history. As for the stations, both Flemington and Ringos are stations you can board at. I've never personally got on at Flemington but the location of the rail yard is still in Ringos so I'd assume that's their main station.
Thanks for videos of these doodlebugs. My Mom, Aunt and Grandmother rode a doodlebug on the CA&C from Orrville to just short of Columbus in 1930s to visit a relative; some trip from Greenville Pa to there, think of the connections, I believe Mom said there was a bus segment somewhere.
Anyway, PRR converted to diesel after the horrendous crash in Cuyahoga Falls in 1940, IIRC.
If only we hadn't torn up all the local track mileage in this country; we might have a great alternative to short distance transport. Idle dreaming perhaps. But ride the rails and walk - kept people fit back in the day. These motor cars are wonderful. Read the latest issue of Classic Trains to get the full tech details. Wintons were the original engines.
My son and I agree with you on that completely! It is one of my son's dreams for abandoned and removed railroad lines to be rebuilt and used again for both freight and passenger trains but he doesn't want that to be wishful thinking he wants it to be a reality.
My son loves trains 🚆🚂🚃🚄🚅🚇🚈🚉🚊🚝🚞🚋🛤 especially railcars like those two. He thinks they are highly underrated and should be preserved, restored, and put back into service on lines that don't get rail service anymore carrying both passengers and mail. He also thinks that Siemens, Progress Rail, or any other company that builds railroad equipment should build clones of these and the departments of transportation should restore and rebuild railroad lines that were abandoned and removed and run these on them.

Cool vidro, I want to try and catch one of these . The Wilmington and western also has a doodlebug. They decorate it for their holiday train. Great video.

Cracking video, nice to see the USA's version of the self-shunting coach in action. I didn't realise that the USA had bashers either (6:50) and blimey O'Reilly, that looked like a close call at the crossing later on.
The US has a lot of self propelled coaches. Budd RDC's are the most common, then the doodle bugs, and some lines built there own weird creations. Oh and some rail buses were tested here. They derailed when they weren't even moving! So yeah that's the run of it
+Matt`s Mocs I think he was referring to the fellow waving his arms at Kutztown. In the UK they have fans called "bashers" that ride trains and signal the engineer to open the throttle by waving their arms.

When I was young, I had a fear of doodlebugs, I guess because they looked and sounded weird. Looking back on it, it was really stupid.
I was at the Allentown & Auburn on July 7th and they told me that 4666 was out until October at the earliest due to mechanical issues. I'm glad you got some runbys with her. I wish they would put a better muffler on that Perkins pony diesel so you can hear the Hamilton working a lot better. Excellent video!! Also I just noticed that 4662 is the first doodlebug I have seen that has air conditioning, albeit homemade.

On a different railroad, yes. The line shown is not rated for more than that.
Are these noisy quaint old beasts Diesel Electric ? Worked on the UK railways' Southern Region where we had Diesel Electric MU sets that came in 2 or 3 car sets with a single motor car, or 4,5,or6's with a motor car each end of a set of trailers. Look up BR Class 201-207 and you'll see. They were very reliable, no clutches to break, and had English Electric engines and motors. The traction motors were the same as those used in the 3rd rail Electric MU's of the time. Happy days. Similar sets went to Northern Ireland.
Yes, I have seen the NIR sets in action. The units in the video were originally petrol electric, converted to diesel engines in the early 1940s. They were powerful enough to pull an unpowered trailer.
Very nice railcars, like 4666 for it's sound of that Hamilton diesel chugging away, had the same thoughts about that donkey engine that's distracting from the Hamilton engine.
That white car at 9:47 was too close for comfort! That driver needs some hearing aids if he didn't hear those horns.

Sam Dickenson They generally don't do stop signs at public crossings in PA.
Drivers don't pay attention to stop signs unless they know they might get hit by another car.
Looks like 4666 needs a paint job, but besides that he runs well.
Eric Schmincke That’s what I first thought, then watching the video I realized that they were already starting on repainting it. Like most of these operations, stuff gets done as the guys find time and funding.

Any Idea what horns these 2 cars were wearing when you filmed them???
On the 4662, the first horn you hear in the "forward" direction is a WABCO A200, like used on the PRR GG1. In the "reverse' direction I believe it is a Leslie S-25 single bell, but not sure as I'm not a horn expert. The 4666 has a pair of WABCO AA2s one on each end. The difference in sound is due to one end having a blocked bell.

Eastern Coast Productions PRR 4667 is stored at the Escanaba &Lake Superior shop at Escanaba MI along with the 2 surviving Shark nose RF16s

Very nice to see it run, but boy is it a homely looking thing! :D And that air horn.. a few octaves lower and it'd sound like a GG-1!
Great vid you did fine! The car seems to be very long for some reason, larger than a normal passenger car?
The forward air horn on the 4662 is a Leslie A 200, same horn used on the GG1.
Well then, I was right, been a few years since I was in a "G" I miss them to this day...

No. PRR didn't have purpose built trailers, unlike the Reading which did. PRR used standard coaches for extra capacity.
What happened to those today?
Both still operational. 4666 is in the shop getting a new roof and a repaint.

There are only two doodlebugs in the video, 4662 on the Wilmington and Western, and 4666 on the Allentown and Auburn.
Sorry, misunderstood your question. The 3rd surviving PRR bug is the 4667, identical to the 66. It is currently stored on the E&LS at Escanaba MI.

I wonder if they fixed the Carbon Monoxide Poisoning issue in these Doodlebugs.
I was not aware that this was a common issue. If CO problems did exist, proper attention to the exhaust piping would surely cure it.
@@fmnut All right. Apparently CO2 poisoning was a minor design flaw in the doodlebugs. This was the cause of the Doodlebug Disaster
@@Coloribus2004 The early doodlebugs had gasoline or distillate engines. Most were converted to diesel prior to the end of WWII. This corrected the emissions problem you are referring to.

That's what happens to a WABCO AA2 when one of the diaphragms quit working. The rear one is more fresh.
