I so enjoyed the documentary, thank you!!....Visited and rode the Strasburg Railroad last year 2017 with my dear friend from Finland and we had one of the best and most enjoyable times of our lives....The beautiful and peaceful Amish countryside adds so much charm to your journey, when you step back in time riding the Strasburg Railroad....We loved it !!! ~Marianne...
On my third visit to Strasburg I took part in their first season on a Hostler Tour in 2014 and as part of the tour I climbed in the cab of Strasburg 90
I grew up there basically. I remember the old look of the Hello Dolly Car, n the other coaches. Took my bf there for the first time on Monday, he loved it. Got Amtrak flying past us at Leamans station "Paradise"
Nice job, Linn. I'm so glad to see the railroad continuing with you at the helm. What a blast to see Don Hallock and Huber Leath. I only wish your dad and Johnny Bowman were in it.
I rode the Strasburg Railroad in 2011 and had an awesome time! And little did I know (at the time) that I was riding on the oldest operating railroad in the U.S.! #89 pulled the train.
15:23-18:55 the way these men talk about these engines you can feel their passion for railroading. It’s something that’s been forgotten excluding organizations similar to this around the world. The feeling the emotion the “soul” is something that needs be preserved also.
The Strasburg railroad has four operational steam locomotives. They include, Great Western No. 90 Canadian National No. 89 Norfolk and Western No. 475 Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal No. 15 (rebuilt and repainted as Thomas the Tank Engine)
This railroad has seen it's only time on the 10 Years Of Thomas The Tank Engine & Friends VHS tape, other railroads are often seen on DVDs with trailers for movies and in fact the clips from Day Out With Thomas 1999 on the 10 Years Of Thomas The Tank Engine & Friends VHS tape is in fact the opening day
My point was #4 was used in the past on the Strasburg and regardless of anyone's view point regarding its steam capabilities, it would've been nice to see in action. I'm sure there is film footage somewhere of the old Reading Camelback.
Nice documentary. Between about 4:50 and 6:50, it shows a PRR A3-class 0-4-0, a tiny, diamond stack 2-4-0 and one or two ex-PRR 4-4-0's, besides the William Penn (which ended up on the West Coast later).. Were those all Strasburg RR locomotives? Has anyone ever compiled a complete pre-preservation locomotive roster for the Strasburg?
That PRR 4-4-0 is no. 1223 and did run for a limited time on the Strasburg back in the late 80s on loan (I believe) from the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum. She is currently preserved next door at the museum.
Thomas and the magic railroad is how I discovered the Strasburg Railroad when I was a kid and now this coming June I’m going there for day out with Thomas
I think that deep 12 inch hooter whistle 475 has blown was worn by A class 1218. I believe 475 blows 1218s old whistle when hauling freight. A class 1218 was built for that.
i fired that engine on the cn out of hamilton ontario we had the biggest fleet on the cn because of the bridge at caladonia believe or not we had one going at 70 mph on the wahbashj near jarvis ont we also had to doublehead the afternoon stone train because of that bridge
Did Amtrak ever build the depot at the end of the line where its passengers could detrain and transfer to the Strasburg? We were there on a Friday morning in September, 2004. Hurricane Ivan arrived that night and the only things we could see beside the Penn Turnpike the next day above the water were the George Bush for President yard signs. So much for being a blue state.
Overhaul's don't fix hunting motion or a rough ride. Not having a pilot or trailing truck makes 31 is prone to these conditions because of her wheel arrangement.
They actually do own a turn table to my knowledge but they need to put it together. Rumors were a couple years ago that they were thinking of installing it at the end of the line in Paradise but not sure if it fell through.
I've been to Strasburg probably 50 or more times since I was a Child. I miss going there as I've moved out of State. Hope to return soon.

Fantastic video! I was there on June 2nd and absolutely loved the railroad and other attractions! ...Roy
Please bring #31 (7312) back to life! She deserves it!
She's coming back
I love that idea

I am not a "rail fan" but I have loved steam locos since my first cab ride at age 6. I understand the comments by the staff.

Outstanding video.
Thank you for your question. The trains were run specifically for the video which was made in early 2000's
On the Strasburg Railroad I've rode with Thomas, Percy, 89, and 475.
On the Cass Scenic, I've rode with Big Six, 2 and 4, 11 and 5.
I been on all of them except 31,1223,7002,camelback 4
No you so shut the fuck up anyone can like Thomas the tank engine
Oh my chaidhood😭
You’d have to be pretty old to have ridden behind the camelback, 1223 and 7002.
I can’t wait to be able to work there when I’m older it’d be so cool.
>^..^< Lovely 29 and a half minuets, Big Thank You......
I rode the Strasburg Railroad several times and hope to ride it again someday.

Amazing Story
Great documentary.
so important train, and railroad. i hope i am going to go on it. so essential museum ,
What is the music used the beginning of the video
This is nice. I noticed some clips are from Day out with Thomas. Did anyone else notice?
Yes
+Jack Small wow I'm not the only one who noticed.
Yep that from 10 Years of Thomas in 1999.

Its right here. 5:06
7312 ran from 1959 until 2009
Is that day out with Thomas at the Strasburg railroad at 5:06 and 19:57?
Yes That's Right.
It's a great video to be sure, however I am puzzled as to why they ignored former Reading #1187, nee Strasburg #4.

They're probably just some stock images they had on hand and put in for some reason(?)
That PRR 4-4-0 is no. 1223 and did run for a limited time on the Strasburg back in the late 80s on loan (I believe) from the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum. She is currently preserved next door at the museum.
Why was 89 going in the opposite direction?
Founded in 1832, the line is been 100 years old in 1932.
Yep 1832.
11:09 I knew the original engine house was small but i didn’t think it was only just big enough for the Plymouth.
:33 in the background you can see B.E.D.T 15 which looks to be in the process of being turned into Strasburg 1 aka Thomas.
where did this guy get 8 miles of track from... its a 4.5 mile shortline.
I saw a picture in this documentary with 1187. Anyone notice?
I rode behind loco 90 back in 1980.
Why was 89 going in the opposite direction? When was this video made?
Aaron Springborn I think it was for a photo shoot
Aaron Springborn what was the time in the video? I probably could tell you.
23:54 - I didn’t know the Strasburg Railroad was involved in MORE movies besides “Thomas and the Magic Railroad.”
How You Know?
1223 ran from 1961 until 1989 7002 ran from 1983 until 1989

Why does he talk like radio people did in the early 20th centaury? 1900s-1950/1960?
If you don't like 31 with all the problems why dont you just overhaul her?

Turntable actually is part of the railroad museum
Does the museum let them use it anymore

Funny they mention how bad the track was. 31 probably made it worse since she's an 0-6-0
