Let me show you how I compose and shoot long-exposure moonscapes in this info-packed video, which takes you on location and shares some valuable post-processing secrets.
We finally break the camper out of winter storage and go on our first road trip of the year to indulge in some moonscape landscape photography.
After stopping for waffles and a milkshake, we find a spectacular sea stack on the coast that begs to be photographed.
The Bay of Fundy is known for its treacherous tides, but my lame attempt at planning does at least extend to checking the tide tables.
On my first test shot, I quickly capture a strong Moonstar image and share my post-processing tricks using the latest tech from Luminar Neo.
After that, the clouds put an end to my moonscape shoot but the sunrise promises to be absolutely glorious.
What happens when Amanda eats Ramen noodles, and why is my hair so high? Why do I have a massive bell in my backyard, and what's my face like?
There's really one way to find out.

Don't ever change the closing scene you use on your videos. It's classic, and hysterical.
Totally love how you show the steps you used in Luminar Neo. Not only educational, but also entertaining. Keep shooting.
Love the shot of arched sea stack! The colors were gorgeous. Not sure how I feel about the fake sun rays on the second one. I was impressed by the image before you mentioned the rays were fake, then I started to prefer the original shot while you were going back and forth between them. Haha strange how the brain works. 😅
The brain 🧠 instinctively knows when something is real, compared to a heavily manipulated image.
Neo's remove dustspots feature has saved me literally hours of processing time. Worth it for that reason alone.
Think you need Photopills!
And a new lens guard. My goodness, what happened to it?
Or Sun Surveyor and Astropheric!
@@GertKrachtPertty sure he said in a previous video that it broke. And, since it’s an integrated lens shade, he can't just replace it.
@@ravenfallsphotography6254 Thanks. I must have missed that video. Always sad when this happens to a lens.
My work takes me all over Scotland. I’m off to Islay tomorrow and have been watching weather and night sky forecasts. It’s looking good. Final bit of motivation is this video. Brilliant inspiring stuff as usual Gavin.
Sunset paid off. Sacrificing beauty sleep for a great shot!
Your perseverance when it comes to getting up in the middle of the night to shoot is quite admirable. Great video as per usual. Looking forward to the next one while catching up with your older work.
A plop amd a rusty bell end..Dearie me Gavin…Great shots is usual…
Loving the Jonny Bravo look. Awwwwww Mommma.
That’s some kajagoogo do you had at the beginning ! That spot looks class and the sunrise was all you could wish for !! Great shots and edits Pal
You must count your audience is quite aged lol. Since I am sure that none of my kids have a clue who Depeche mode was :)
and still is...
😂😂😂
We saw Depeche Mode at the O2 in January, they were absolutely amazing!
My daughter (aged 27) knows exactly who Depeche Mode are. In fact, she………….just can’t get enough……
Night shots are my favourite type of photography and these shots didn’t disappoint. That red jacket looks amazing, well done Amanda’s man 👌
Dang that morning glow up was nice, great sea stack arch. Good thing we're rolling in to summer, no heater...burrr. 📷😎
DO NOT BAD MOUTH THE BLESSED WAFFLE HOUSE!
Don’t you blaspheme in here! 😂😂😂
🤝🤔
Brilliant video, just loving the hair 😂😂
Good to see you are on the road again with a New Haircut. Enjoy
Dude....I think that barnet of yours is more "A Flock Of Seagulls" than Depeche Mode! Don't forget there's free food and board at my place in the Lakes if you're across the pond!
the cloud whisperer strikes again! amazing sunrise shot!!!
That seastack had the same hairstyle as you 😉
I been watching your videos since before Amada was your stalker, and you're looking really healthy man. You've lost weight and seem happier. Keep doing your thing, your content helps keep me going when I'm feeling low. Appreciate you both!
Love the video! Thank you.
Thanks again for another great vid. As for the sunrays-whatever it takes to realize your vision! Plus, no harm at all in seeing what these tools can do for you-and I appreciate you sharing it.
Excellent 👍...... You are the Stack King 👑 of course with a little help from Luminar Neo
Breathtaking location, fantastic shots! Thanks for the inspiration!
Oh, wow Gavin, patience certainly paid off, and thank's for showing the editing in Luminar.
Love the new, more educational content. Thanks so much for providing so much value and shenanigans!
Fantastic photos, as always. Nice one Gavin, thanks for sharing.
More like Echo & The Bunnymen ! Bahaha
Great to see you out shooting in the dark again! Loved the milky way made easy course 👌.
As someone who has chased many nightscapes I know how hard they are. As always cracking work!
another entertaining video Gavin, big smiles from Amanda now you are back in the camper, It was certainly worth the early morning rise to get these images, very inspirational to get up before sunrise, thanks for sharing.
Good seastack photos, and the hints on using Neo will help me too, ta
That 1st shot of the moon behind the stack, reminded me of a BBC2 INTRO. Amazing photo. Inspiring me to try some moonscapes. Thanks for the 10% off too, shall be using that. 👌😊
Rockabilly Gavin shot some extraordinary images !!!
Sunrise magic!
Haven't seen your videos for a while but nightscaping is always getting my attention.
Nice video
Beautiful!💎
Magical sea stack image Gavin, thank you for sharing
❤love the video and the editing
I'm envious of your camper. We had some wonderful bird photography experiences while glamping in our 24 foot pull behind camper. Alas, time and health problems caught up with us and I sold my Tundra and camper last fall. We miss it but couldn't use it now. Hope you and Amanda get lots of use out of yours. I'll be looking forward to it.
Such a great tool
Thanks Gavin, good vid. 😊
Excellent photography!
Fantastic pictures, awesome
Awesomatic!
Epic location!
I actually liked the out of camera on the first photo. I liked the mystery of the darkness. Edited photo also looked great.
Beautiful photos pal ,incredible place for seascapes
Great video! Beautiful shots 👍
You had me in Depche Mode!
Some nice shots Gav 👌
Beautiful shots!
Your hair at the beginning foreshadowed the sea stack with the arch. It had that wispy copse of grasses at the top too ;-) I half expected you to open the door to the necessary on the camper and we'd see Uncle Grumpy or Brent. Maybe next year. Safe travels!
Ooo that sunrise was nice! I film a lot of sunsets over the tidal coasts of Tampa for my channel, and I often get that worry about the color not quite kicking off all the way. You're lucky you have sea stacks to work with, but if you ever fancy a Florida Gulf coast sunset with water birds and mangroves, let me know! There's even a nice Canadian RV park for you here. lol
Gotta get the camper ready for the road.
Gavin, I'm addicted to your channel and love your videos. Here's a thought about your edits. Possibly the bright spot glowing through the cloud left of the stack could have been taken out. It distracted me as it actually looked like the sun and it confused my eyes in relationship to the sunrays placement. Thank you for your incredible and tireless education. Can't wait until your next video!
Love the content Gavin.
Alan Wilder would be proud of that hair!
I feel your moonscape shot with the star pattern looks too much like a sunset shot, but that’s me, I love a good silhouette with a darker sky, but all in all I really like your photography 🙂
Great vid Gavin , wow those rocks going down I understand why Amanda didn’t want to make that trek. I liked both captures beautiful sunrises. No Milky though..well maybe next time. You might even be able to shoot the Milky from your house I bet. Have a great you two😊
Daaaaang! Those sunrise shots are mint! Some neat tricks with Luminar, but eye watering pricing, jesus. Anyway, I would think that you use Photopills or something for planning a moon shot, but I like how you still just sort of wing it. The no plan, plan! Great vid!
What? Why haven't I found your channel before now? It's epic! I'm looking forward to watching your content.
get your binge on ;)
great shot 👍👍👍
Superb video...thanks for the great advice on night photography...Best wishes to you both.
You come wit this. When sunset is at midnight. 😂
Gavin - I'm sure you've used Photo Pills before - it has an augmented reality view that will show you exactly where the moon or sun will be and where it will rise and set. That way the only thing to worry about are clouds or bad weather.
The Photographer's Ephemeris (TPE) does that as well. Would have been a real time saver for Gavin.
I have.
Where's the fun in that?
Great vlog Gavin! And spectacular shots! I was at that location last spring briefly - but the tide wasn't fully out - so I couldn't get down on the beach and investigate the area to much. I'll have to get back over there this year and check it out again. I'll see if I can drag Chris over there too. He mentioned he'd like to get over there and check out some of the great waterfalls. Keep up the great work and the instructional stuff for Luminar. Looks interesting. Cheers!
Yeah Chris doesn't do weekdays.
ive gotta make another trip to the east coast and take some seascape shots again! great video, love that sunrise photo, worth the work!
" All signs point to no" LoL
Nice Gavin.
cool editing tips
Nice ♥️ 🌹 ♥️ beautiful 🌹 😍
I'm gonna have a hard time whenever I see a Milky Way shoot thinking about Alyn. Luminar Neo looks pretty awesome!! Tell Amanda explosive diarrhea is everyone's response to a good pot noodle! It's totally worth it! 😆
It's a good way to honour him. I'm going to dedicate my best MW shot to Alyn but it needs to be an absolute banger.
I agree, Galvin.. I call it the Aweful Waffle House and that is a gorgeous sunrise shot.
“JOEY DOSEN’T SHARE FOOD!” 😂 😂
Gav looking like Elvis in the wilderness. Please no pelvic thrusts 😂. Nice vid brother.
Don’t you dare touch my fries! 😂
Terrific video, thanks, quite hair-raising in parts. Your photography is always exceptional, you don't need to add artificial elements.
I’m so happy 🍀 for you the Yorkshire Incantation 🧙🏻 worked. Beautiful image at 19:38. Does Amanda now have two Hasselblad you can borrow? 😄 18:53
Hmmm... I first thought "moonscape" was a euphemism for for something, and settled in for a good night's viewing. But the video turned out to be about dodgy haircuts (Flock Of Seagulls anyone), van life, and some brilliant photography. Thanks :-)
Feel like I've been "RickRolled" with that hair
Tip with sunstars [or moonstars, as may be the case], is that they always have an even number of arms. It's to do with the number of blades in your lens aperture. An even number of blades will have that same number of arms. An odd number of blades, will have double that number of arms. Doubling an odd number is always even.
Circa Beavis 😂
When were you at Smith Rock Oregon? Let me know next time and we can host you. Keep up the good work.
Feb 2020 was the last one.
Gavin, I have to say that this image, with the light striations added by Lumina, is a bit on the fake looking side since the striations appear on the camera side of the mound while, of course, the moon is on the back side of the moon some 240,000 miles away. Basic physics tells you that this just can't be real. On a positive note, Amanda really looks hot with the check slacks at the beginning of the video. Love the XPAN shot, one of my favorite crop modes!
Awesome shots! I was hoping you could get a Milky Way shot too but I suppose it was too cloudy. No heat is hard. I hope you got it fixed.
Should have showed us the Bell at the end .
Groan 😄
Photopills or Planitpro would have shown you exactly where the moon was going to be while scouting the shots. Their AR facilities are especially useful for checking ahead with your shot on screen.
First like 4 weeks in a row!🎉🎉
Flock of Seagulls more like!
Maybe your hair is channeling Buster Poindexter? 😀
I wonder if there are any sea stacks on the east coast of Australia near me. I must check and rev myself up to do a morning shoot.
Yes ❤ finally the best thing of weekend happened, the Fototripper video popped up. Is that at 9:01 shot with the XCD 4/21? I have that lens but never used it yet for a night sky shot.
Ahhh ok, questions answered at 10:47. - To whom it may concern: The low blade count of the Hasselblad lenses result in low sun/moon/light star quality. The best results delivers the XCD 2.8/65. Or any of the Leica APO-Summicron-SL lenses. If someone reading this being on a budget: mirrorless cameras have generally a low sunstar quality because the sensor includes also the AF technology, that results in ugly side effects. Not so a DSLR, the AF sensor is in the bottom of the body and if the mirror is flipped away, nothing messes up with the lenses. DSLRs still deliver best sun star quality ever. Just ensure to purchase a lens having wide open no coma at the edges (e.g. the Sigma ART lenses, bulky, heavy, excellent quality). Attention, no sun stars wide open. You must stop down at least to F8 or F11.
Photopills!!! Why guess at moon position when you can know with certainty?
Because then there would have been no video obviously.
@@fototripper We saw the hair. You didn't need a moon for a video!!!
Hi Gavin, just wondered if when doing an editing video, you could include a link to a low-res copy of the image you're editing? Would enable us to follow your process? Cheers - Mike, UK
Not a bad idea that.
Great episode. Keywords flatulence and taint. Stick those rays where the Sun don’t shine 😂
That sea stack shot was OK. But by the time you took it, the reflecting pool had drained away. Maybe you should crop it out a touch. On the other hand, the image following was very impressive. I've never considered using Luminar Neo. I guess I still think of Luminar as a sky-replacement tool. Obviously it's now a lot more.
As for your hair: it was more of a Flock of Seagulls feel to it. Just comb it forward a little more. 😉😂
Ok I've cropped it out. Refresh and play again to see the change.
Heaton's bell is bigger
