I'm loving this series so far. I love the fact that you're having all the doubts that "normal" people would have about cutting holes in things that cost several £10K's. I love your hesitation when attempting to do stuff you've never done before. I love the fact that you're showing all the normal things that go wrong - running out of stuff half way through!
    I'm having a van converted.
Just not got the time to spare to do it myself. I'm intrigued to see how you're going to secure the van, in particular your camera gear. I'm currently trying to work out what's the best solution for this.
This has now become my "Must Watch of the week" 🤩

Could you imagine how much fun could be had if Nigel, James Popsys and Mads Peter Iverson all got together to work on the van....Rick would be laughing so much trying to film them. You'll get there Nigel. I always enjoy your channel. Cheers !

Your confidence will grow as you get into the project. You are encountering new (to you) problems every time you start a new phase and effectively face a new learning curve with each one. Those who have already done this several times will forget what it was like for them the first time but your doing ok Nigel. You’ve certainly got all the kit you could wish for so it’s just a case of taking your time and double checking before you cut anything. Keep up the good work mate. Can’t wait to see the finished article and then hopefully we can get back to some photography which I know very little about and you excel at!

Don’t think this is could be considered a ‘how to’ convert a van series (maybe ‘how not to’) but it certainly is entertaining and for that thank you so much for sharing. Rick clearly has his work cut out trying to hold the camera steady when trying not to laugh. I think you have a new catch phrase Nigel, ‘what could possibly go wrong’. 😂

  • @timrosenburgh8597
    @timrosenburgh8597 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

You had me on tenderhooks while you were cutting the hole in the van.
When you get iron filings on the roof or swarf as we called it in the bodyshop and have hoovered up what you can and everything is sealed check the roof after a couple of days after it has rained to see if you have little rusty bits which will be some iron filings that you have missed.
You need to remove them as eventually they will go through the paint and check a few times every few days until you are satisfied that there are no more.
I hope this tip helps you.
Look forward to the next one.

I have two solar panels on the roof as well. A great plus about that is that they cover the van's roof. And they keep the sun from reaching the roof. Due to that, the interior gets less hot when the van is in the sun. Looking forward to the platform you are going to build.

How do you deal with sparks burning into the paint? That's why it usually gives me shivers seeing someone use an angle grinder anywhere near a car or bike or glass or anything of that matter. I work in welding and assembly and I'm always doing my best to protect from and guide or shield the sparks. You sound pretty confident in this so I'd love to hear how you go about this, because the cutting itself, especially of sheet metal, is SO much more convenient with a grinder.

@@MatthiesWesche Wide tape over thick cardboard sheet, make sure you clean the roof thoroughly as the grinding dust will stain. Also my guard on the grinder is turned to align with the roof, use the thin fibre blades . Cheers

There is a reason for professional photographers and there is also a reason for professional van conversions.

very entertaining Nigel, looking forward to following your conversion, hopefully at the end it will be "doesn't get better that this" not "what could possibly go wrong" ! New Van name " Vansel Adams" ??

This feels highly relatable as a guy who keeps going DIY route with stuff he has no experience with.. 😅

Glad you're wearing goggles when drilling as those fillings go everywhere. You could stick a towel or bag there when doing the windows to save filings going everywhere.

The first cut in the metal is the hardest, The vent was a good place to start as it has some leeway.

Looks like you'll have fun Nigel! Might be worth not parking the van behind the table saw when using it. If the saw jams it could shoot the timber into the rear door. Looking forward to the rest of the series!
