I vote for underground cities expansion. I wan't my colony to be a dystopian world where poor people and mutants live recluded in the tunnels and the rich live in the domes. I want to be able to cut the oxygen from the tunnels and let them suffocate if they threaten to rebel against government.
That moment when you realize that "dwarf mode" is actually the only viable thing for a Mars base. Surface would only be a thing for a short while as a service base, until an underground one can be built. While this game is marketed as being "in large parts scientific" or based on actual solutions for Mars colonization, it is far from it. It is actually a casual goofy looking city building simulation set in a very basic alien environment. You can start with the domes - while those were popularized in some old Sci Fi works, no one is actually seriously considering them. Radiation, dust, meteors, plus you need to fill all that area (several times bigger than the actual living space) with enough oxygen and heat. But here, the dome is a primary living space. And instead of filling it as effective as possible, you are placing bars, restaurants, apartments like in the most expensive places on Earth, lavish and shiny. And this is the FIRST Martian colony. Add the goofy googly eyed robots with pots for reservoirs and you have completely destroyed the immersion of the game. So yes, maybe Quill is joking here, but the "dwarf mode" would actually be a realistic one. Wanna see how a first base/colony would look, several years since its establishment? Look for National Geographic "Mars" series, it has 6 episodes. And it actually features Ilon Musk type of character doing the colonization. Not really great in terms of acting and drama, but as far as science goes, it is as close as you will get.
A tip: Queue up several Techs. In one game, early on, I got 3000 Science from one Anomaly. That’ll let you insta-ding *three* of the 1k cost Techs all the way from zero to full. And I agree with Quill’s guess that if you ding your entire queue then any excess is lost. 3k Science is likely the max for early game Anoms, but I’d still suggest trying to always have 4 Techs lined up, or even all 5 slots. Especially if you intend to science hard, as in “Europe”.

Didn't get to see all the sponsors - are there any that are essentially a penal colony type thing - where all colonists are either security or criminals? Also with Earthsick disabled; nobody gets to just come back. Then you could turn Mars into Space Australia.
I had this exact map for my first game, I thought it would be a smart idea to land on the plateau because it looks cool. I got stuck up there with no metal or rare minerals, ran out of money shipping them in. Didn't know I had to build a dome next to a deposit (I thought the people would walk further to mine), and the tunnel said it won't build because I needed a rover in range but I couldn't drive one down the cliff. RIP
... so this has been out for a couple of weeks now and many of us playing have discovered a lot of things not covered in these videos, but just for those that haven't discovered it yet, you can manually control a drone out of it's normal operating range. In the case of the malfunctioned Explorer; select a drone, click on the repair icon in it's "info panel" (make sure you do not mistake the nuts and bolts icon, this will destroy the drone). After clicking the "repair vehicle" icon, directly click on the disabled vehicle. The drone will travel completely across the map if his battery is fully charged and repair the selected vehicle. Once his task is complete the drone will return to his operating area if his battery has enough charge to get him home. This can also be used to have a drone carry some resource into another drone's operating area. You have to watch, but when the drone with the resource gets into range of the other operating area, click the "drop resource" icon. You can return him to his own area or just leave him alone - in a few seconds he will return home on his own. If you get distracted and the drone reaches the target location he will eventually return home, but he will still be carrying the resource.
Would be really neat if there was a crash land options. You have to survive with what you have, a few colonist, have to scavenge from the rocket. In a way i kinda wish that rockets took way longer flying between planets.

comments from the future here but dust storms are probably the hardest disaster to deal with cold waves are pretty easy once you get heaters but in a dust storm completely lossing your oxygen generation can be deadly specially if your pipes leak mid storm and bleed away your resources and if you dont have sources of underground water to mine then you lose your water generation during dust storms to and god forbid its a great dust storm event that causes more maintenance issues and lasts even longer lol
I realise your'e already on Part 2 (or 3) but why don't you start with (metal) stock piles for metals so that the drones are always working in the beginning
Michael A Well, you don't KNOW what it is; The name and descriptions are really vague and don't explain anything. The choices other than none and random are really if you want to redo a mystery that you already saw happen, and if you alrrady saw it happen it wasn't a mystery anyways.
I’ve really enjoyed your tutorials. They were a great introduction to concepts that helped me understand some issues I’d encountered playing it in the blind. I’m planning to keep on watching... But I really wish you’d stuck with millions and billions rather than saying “Mars bucks.” I find thinking in real currency terms makes the experience more immersive. It’s a minor nit to pick, I’m sure.
I think that 50% farming penalty is kinda stupid for the once sponsor that focuses on breeding. They already have low funds and zero research, which means simply sustaining food production will negate any breeding advantage. Basically they only have penalties.
But it kinda robs it of the personality, kinda like the paradox is higher difficulty but also has a unique benefit. The Ark folks don't, because their benefit is directly negated by their drawback
So it doesn't affect *any* of the other farming forms? Hmm... well then that's not so bad. Still, I'd rather have taken something more fitting like universal +100% research cost as a penalty. Anyway, I think I've made my choice on which sponsor to pick first ^^

... so this has been out for a couple of weeks now and many of us playing have discovered a lot of things not covered in these videos, but just for those that haven't discovered it yet, you can manually control a drone out of it's normal operating range. That farming penalty is only for hydroponics, not for other types of farms (hydroponics beeing the worst of them).
So it doesn't affect *any* of the other farming forms? Hmm... well then that's not so bad. Still, I'd rather have taken something more fitting like universal +100% research cost as a penalty. Anyway, I think I've made my choice on which sponsor to pick first ^^
