Yeah, definitely a sad story there with his house fire and getting ripped off by the contractor he hired to rebuild everything. Seemed like a nice guy who didn't deserve that bad luck. 😕
C'mon Charlie...pull that chassis before you wash things down. :) It's so much easier to get to all the dust in the nooks and crannies of the chassis with it removed.
Somehow, this is actually the first G07 I've really ever worked on. I only own two others: the one in my Centipede hasn't needed anything more than basic adjusting since I got it years ago, and there's a 13" G07 in the Missile Command cocktail in the restoration queue for next year that I haven't touched yet.
For other monitors, yes, but there are so many stories of G07 flybacks failing catastrophically after a cap kit that I didn't want to risk it. And oh wow, I didn't realize you were Down Under! I keep meaning to sign up for the Aussie Arcade forums -- are Yanks generally welcome there? 😅
I know, I know! In general, I do the same - only replacing flybacks when they’re visibly damaged or not functioning properly. But I’d just heard too many stories of G07 flybacks (especially the early ones with gray anode cups) blowing up after a cap kit, and I succumbed to the “old wives tale.” I definitely wasn’t looking for fireworks in this episode! But don’t worry, I kept the old flyback for possible future use.
Did you end up getting the curl out I have the curl on my GO7 that I can't get out. I have replace the caps flyback and coil but that curl still shows up on the right side. Let me know how you got the curl out.
I usually just try to adjust the curl out as much as possible, but if you can’t live with it there is a “G07 curl mod” (aka “sync upgrade”) that often helps. I believe the necessary caps and instructions are included with the APAR cap kit: www.arcadepartsandrepair.com/store/components/capacitors/electrohome-g07-cbo-monitor-cap-kit-105c/ More info here: www.therealbobroberts.net/g07notes.html
Why did you do this level of repair to a tube with such narc burn in? I would do a tv tube swap on it while youre stripping it down that far. I’ve been snapping up 19” tvs from the trash areas in residential just for this. Can’t beat free
I’ve got a rather high tolerance to screen burn - more than most people I suppose. I do have a growing stockpile of monitors, tubes, and TV sets suitable for tube swaps, but I typically only use them to replaced necked or dead tubes. I’m in this for the long haul, and someday the only working tubs we’ll have left are ones with heavy burn!
You aren't a true arcade repairman until you've unwittingly shocked yourself with the filter cap because of that fuse being blown.
I’ve shocked myself a few times before while working on this stuff, just not by a G07 filter cap. #KnowledgeIsPower
Ian Kellogg's cap kits used to be the best out there, I miss him so much when it comes to this !

You're probably right! I know some folks wash them in the sink, too.
I've rebuilt so many of these now, I know more about the G07 then any other... LOL

Normally if the flyback is working, I just leave it, but saying that, parts don't come easy here in Australia.

I only replace the flyback if it's physically damaged. The replacements have been known to fail as well. So if it's not broken, don't fix it :)
