    James, i'm one of the silent (for the most part) supporters you mentioned in the intro and that has made me want to say that you are one of the chillest, intellectual and observant reactors on this platform. You actually watch the movie, engage and judge them fairly all while noticing the finer details in the movies. I can tell you don't fake a reaction and that's why I subbed the first video I watched of yours. Keep it up and keep inspiring, man!

    George Romero, the original director, said in an interview that he liked the first 20 minutes, but said it strayed into music video territory.
    However Film Critic Roger Ebert and Richard Roper gave this movie a positive review, giving it a thumbs up.

    • @TheLegendOfRandy
      @TheLegendOfRandy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      As influential as Romero was, he admittedly fell off in his old age. Land, Diary and Survival while trying to stay relevant. Ironically, the only reason he got to make Diary of the Dead, I believe, is because of the success of this film. R.I.P., George! Still the best, regardless.

    A fun fact, the cop on tv with the sunglasses saying to shoot them in the head and burn them is Tom Savini. He did the special effects in the original Dawn of the Dead (1978) as well as playing a role. Also, the other guy on tv saying the dead will walk the earth also played a role in the original, and said the same line at one point. They talk as if they've been through it before lol good stuff!

    Be sure to watch the original versions by George A. Romero: _Night of the Living Dead_ , _Dawn of the Dead_ and _Day of the Dead_ . I guarantee you'll get a real kick out of them.
    *Interesting note:* _Night of the Living Dead_ is in public domain, so you can stream your full reaction on TH-cam without getting a copyright strike.

      @RussellCHall 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@IggyStardust1967 Directed by Tom Savini himself no less, not sure I agree that it is better but I see where you are coming from for sure, Tony Todd in Duane Jones part from the original is the only possible choice that could live up to the power of Jones' performance and I am so glad it exists , and Patricia Tallman is a superior Barbara so you very well could be right, I just love the originals gritty low budget feel a little more in this case.

    • @IggyStardust1967
      @IggyStardust1967 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RussellCHall Okay, I'm not throwing any shade on the original Night at all. For the time, it was groundbreaking. I just didn't think it went quite "where the times were going".
      Let me explain: Barbara went pretty much catatonic, which, okay, is how women tended to act back then in horror movies. But why wasn't there at least one man who did the same thing? Witnessing "the dead coming back to life and eating the living" would certainly be a traumatic experience for many people, gender aside. That's why I prefer the remake. Sure, Barbara (Tallman's version) started to lose it, but then was told she needed to "fight", so she did, knowing that her survival depended on it.
      Maybe having the father of the bitten girl lose his shit (in the original) would have balanced that out, especially if they had the mother trying to keep herself together and also make him realize he wasn't helping matters any.
      I'm not trying to second guess Romero. But the times were changing, and he DID do a lot of very good things in that 1968 version. Casting a black man as the main lead? I'm sure that made HUGE waves back then. It was just a few tweaks in the story that I think were done better in the Savini remake that put it "ahead". I still love the original as well, though. However, I do despise that whole "No Copyright card? Oh, it's MINE!" (meaning: Public Domain). That was just plain wrong.
      To be fair, though, I was barely a year old when Night came out, so I was much more used to seeing people react more "realistic" to shocking events. Meaning, some people (male and female) might go catatonic in that situation, but not JUST a/the women.
      The original was a product of its time, it just happened to be on the cusp of "older" vs "newer".

    This was the first zombie movie (in English, anyway) where the zombies were fast and strong, and leapt about like Olympic gymnasts. Zombies were scary before, but slow and not strong, brittle even, and not agile, scary because it's hard to kill something that's already dead, and they are single minded in their hunger so they don't ever give up, and when you change them like that, that's a whole other level of scary. I started rewatching the show from 1987 called "Friday the 13th: The Series" and it features both Sarah Polley (as a child) and Louis Ferreira (her husband in the movie who turned into a zombie in the first few minutes, he was in his early twenties in the show), so those two have been scaring me for a really long time now. Come to think of it, that's the evolution of mummies as well, they went from slow and lumbering and brittle, to fast and strong.

    The Mall music you mention in the beginning is "Always look on the Bright Side of Life" from Monty Python's Life of Brian.
    I always loved that little touch. In the situation they're in it's so sarcastic and dark. It's so funny and such a good music choice.

    I prefer the original. My grade 9 English teacher lived/maybe still does at the house where the man gets hit by the ambulance on the corner. I'm Almost 34 now so the odds she has moved is probably good but i will always remember that and what big news it was at school

    So you haven’t seen a lot of mainstream movies, but you have played a lot of popular video games series? I really like that aspect. I like the idea of playing the video games first, and then watching the movies that inspired those games. Case in point: Dead Rising and Dawn of the Dead. Again, that is really fascinating.

    I liked this one, it’s not breaking new ground but it’s treading the usual path pretty well. I loved that they played the human interactions as primary to the apocalyptic setting, but when they revisited the zombie parts, it was very well done. This was also the first time I’d heard Richard Cheese (he did the cover of Down With The Sickness) and I got fully hooked on his cover albums. I almost got away with playing his Xmas album one year until the swearing kicked in 😂

    The found footage style at the end was always really cool. I think the DVD release had some extras from the gun shop guy's video journal.

    The first five minutes of this movie gets me every time. Subtle hints you pick up on a second viewing that some shit is going down and then BLAMMO…all hell breaks loose. The falling in the shower scene makes me react like you did every time. 😂

    I’m so glad you pointed out how she fell into the bathtub dude because ever since I seen this even back when I was that young I noticed how unbelievably she sold that I’m sure there was things that went into that to make it safe so she didn’t get hurt or it was a stunt woman but man that looked real

    I was 12 when the original Dawn came out and I didn’t get to see it until I was 15 and it became my favorite horror film. When I heard it was getting the remake treatment I was beyond pissed. I was wrong, this movie rocks.👍

    This is one of my favorite zombie movies because it's so tongue-in-cheek. I don't think they meant it to be that way, but it captures the attitude of the 2004 overwhelmed by zombie culture of the time in a satirical way. I also just have a lot of heart for Anna (Sarah Polley) because she used to play Ramona Quimby in the tv series as a kid, and that series and character just still owns my heart even as an adult.

    Interesting fact! The close up shot of Kenneth getting his wound stitched up actually is a shot of the prosthetic getting sewn onto the actors arm. For the close up they hired a real nurse to do the stitches, but she went too deep and the blood actually was real

    Sarah Polley is a wonderful director / screen writer in her own right, she directed Julie Christie to an Oscar mom & and was nominated herself for writing "away from her" it's a bit slow for the channel but I think you would appreciate it nonetheless.

    I agree, James. I love zombie movies and games. I've definitely seen bad zombie movies and games, but I don't think I'll ever get sick of zombies as a concept or a trend. It's fun, it's versatile, and it can be scary if done well, but it can also be hilarious if done well. I think some of the best zombie movies are funny ones, like Shaun of the Dead. Hell, I'd even say Willy from Hocus Pocus is one of my favorite zombies.

    I saw the original Dawn of the Dead (1978) while I was in high school. I had seen Night if the Living Dead as a kid, but this zombie genre was still relatively new and terrifying. There was also a movie called, It's Alive that had me shook, as well as The Omen. The 70's were crazy with horror movies!
