Tremors is a masterpiece. It's a perfect blend of genuine comedy and genuine horror - as a kid, I was as terrified as I was delighted. I wonder sometimes if Tremors was beat out (in terms of influencing my own storytelling) by Indiana Jones alone.
Hahaha honestly either selection holds grounds for representing solid writing.
I still walk around storm drains because of the graboids! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 kid things seem to last a lifetime! 😊

I could watch Tremors over and over and over and never get sick of it. It's one of those rare movies like Home Alone, just never gets old

The Gunwall reveal at 15:20 is always such a pleasure to see first timers react to. You just immediately go from “they’re screwed” to “RIP graboid”
Oh hell yeah, it may not be the "best" movie, but it's one of those "perfect" movies. The dialogue is so tight, there's so many little and large set ups and payoffs, and the movie never oversteps or underplays on its bounds. It does everything it sets out to do and does it well.

Galaxy Quest is another of those perfect movies. 20 years later and I still haven't noticed a single detail that I would change about Galaxy Quest, and 30 years later the same for Tremors.

@@JackXombi The fact that they dubbed it over but left the lips clearly saying "fuck" actually just makes it funnier. Like the use of "Belgium" as the galaxy's worst swear word in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which wasn't in the original UK printing of the book but Douglas Adams thought the obvious censorship made it funnier.

he goes into great length about character development, setting up scenes for a the big payoff later.
like the funky refridgerator that summons the creature.
humans in the open get eaten. humans go inside.
grabboids go through the floor, humans go to roof.
grabboids start tearing down structures, humans get armored transport,
grabboids lay a ditch/trap.....
the chars all retain their brains, and need to use them agains an ever increasing threat level.
the grabboids arent stupid either, they just cant overcome their panic run reflex.
The dialogue in the script, to me, was GENUINE. Whenever someone would say something during a stressful situation in my mind I would be like, "That's exactly what I would've said."
One thing about this movie I love is the almost seamless use of animatronics and miniatures for the Graboids. For example the scene in the rec room? Yeah, a lot of really good miniature work. That whip-pan from the rifle being dropped up to the graboid is a perfect swap from the life-size people, a normal rifle-to-cut with the miniature rifle then the small puppet graboid. Love this movie. Top tier comedy, light horror, and filmmaking
This one's a classic! I watched this movie all the time when I was a kid. It's also one of the few sci-fi horror monster movies where the characters are actually intelligent.

The name of the town reflects the structure of the script. It is, quite literally, Perfection.
"whatever birthed that thing, why?" Tremors II: Aftershocks answers that. The series is decently consistent with the lore.
It was filmed a few hours north of Joshua Tree. Up between Sequoia and Death Valley.
Also note the little girl (on the pogo stick) is the same girl from Jurassic Park.
The Tremors series is such an uncompromised treat for monster fans. Each one elaborates on how the Graboid life cycle works, adding new monster designs in the process while following characters just as interested in learning about them as we are. Really speaks to the little kid in us that memorized all the different kaiju and their abilities in Godzilla movies.

One of the few movies with no filler. Every scene flows perfectly. I would love to see you react to “Big Trouble in Little China” after seeing your delight at the combination of horror and comedy in this one.

That's a fun movie but I'm not sure these days people will tolerate it.
A friend of mine once called this "The smartest dumb movie" ever! It knows what it is, and what it isn't. And what it is overall is a ton of fun! I could easily see this movie existing in the same universe as Buckaroo Banzai and Big Trouble in Little China. 😎👍
Tremors is a perfect and efficient screenplay, plus the effects are great, it's one of those movies I can sit down and watch whenever I see it on.

Some of the meta things I love about this, disregarding the storyline/setting: The gore was plentiful, but it wasn't just messy liquid. It looked organic. There were chunks of stuff that looked like organs/body parts. Also, the leading lady isn't Sharon Stone, Julia Roberts, etc. She's attractive, but 'normal', but she's not some knockout model, and they don't shy away from making her the love interest.

Dude yes! This is one of my childhood favorites. It’s funny, and scary without sacrificing the intelligence of the characters. I don’t recommend watching any sequels, haha. But the original is so much fun.

I can recommend tremors 2 , 3 the tv series, and 4 just because 4 is fun. I can appreciate those. but anything after, especially after burt changed his atlanta hawks hat, is just disappointment. but at the same time if we don't get another tremors movie I'm going to be disappointed LMAO
Something I love about this movie, as you mentioned, is that the characters are quirky but they’re not stupid. They think their way through each problem.
And, that creates more tension because things go wrong DESPITE them creating a plan.
One neat instance of foreshadowing I just recently learned about is at the beginning of the film. When Val is bouncing the truck and yelling "Stampede!" Earl crawls and falls off the back of the truck and he looks similar to a Graboid. Very similar to how they kill the last Graboid by luring it to the cliff and having it fall out the side of it to it's death. So many amazing little details in this movie. They're not brothers, they're hetero life partners. I love the chemistry between the two. Another neat little instance of foreshadowing was when Earl says "Edgar get your butt down from there!" and later he says that to Melvin but he stops himself realizing what's happening and that a Graboid attack is imminent. Love this movie so much.
Aside from the awesome monster movie story that has logic and is fun, we get treated to a "and he gets the girl" scene that feels earned and believable
This one is an underappreciated gem! The camera work leading up to the practical effects sold the monsters beautifully. But the writing and character work from the actors really sold it for me. A lot of times in monster movies, there are too many characters that are just too stupid to care about! I really rooted for the characters in this! And I was genuinely bummed at the ones who did get eaten! That says a lot about this movie. Glad to see your reaction!
Something that really sticks out to me now, watching as an adult, this is a creature feature horror film, that takes place almost entirely during the day.
I love how they upped the 50's drive in movie theater monster movie into a more modern time(alright is it kind of old now), yet kept it "grounded". For the most part, the people involved don't make many stupid decisions like they do in many horror movies. It bothers me when characters do something incredibly stupid, but the script here is tight. IMO
This is a great movie.. its one of those movies that, if it comes on.. you end up watching it till the end.. every time. 😄

it's such a good film, especially with the great chemistry that all the characters seem to have, who are genuinely likeable. What made it even better, is that it was chosen to not show the monster, or it's true scale, for quite some time, but show the carnage and destruction it was causing. Made it for a much more thrilling viewing.
Tremors, the low budget b-movie that ended up being one of the greatest creature feature movies ever made, they nailed everything in this film.
I love how various scenes are set up. Like they're forced to leave the rocks, they run, and then the girl has to follow them with the lighter. Every bit just comes together. Like you suggested, it's kind of like a land version of Jaws. The most recent iteration of this movie (good lord... 7) is mostly CGI and sure Burt is still in it, but it just lost some of the spirit and grit. Also, until my dying breath, I will say that Burt escapes to island solitude after the last movie. If something didn't happen on camera, it didn't happen. ;-)
Reactions like this and channels like RLM are absolutely necessary for keeping good movies and story telling in the masses mind.

One of my favorite scenes in this movie is when Val and Earl first get to the store and we’re first introduced to everyone. I like how different they all are. Also, did you recognize the Mindy as the girl from Jurassic Park?
@@tkmoore6057 I saw a couple reactors that did, but I don't remember who they were. Besides, she's, in some circles, could arguably be considered as recognizable as Kevin Bacon, so I didn't see the point in stating her presence. The girl that plays Mindy, however, is easy to overlook because of how little her role in this is and since there's such an age difference between this movie and her most famous role, people can understandably not recognize her.
this is one of the all practical effects movies, the behind the scenes with Bert for the entire series.

"Motherhumper" is the edit as they filmed it with too many swears for the Rating it was going for.
The sound design is amazing! Watch it again and you'll notice (since the Graboids sense sound vibrations) the contrast of some scenes. One scene is dead silence in a panoramic shot of the desert and then it immediately cuts to a noisy jackhammer. Little things like that are genius.
I used to live around most of the locations in this film. Much of it, like the rock vaulting scenes, were done around the Alabama Hills near Lone Pine, CA and Mt. Whitney. You'll see this location used in a lot of westerns and commercials. Next time you're on the 395, slow down in Lone Pine, CA and take a look around.
I just made a similar post. The film museum in Lone Pine has a Tremors exhibit, in addition to Iron Man and Django Unchained. Lots of film and TV shows shot in them thar hills since the 1910s!
A movie you’d enjoy with the actor Earl, “The Adventures of Remo Williams”. He’s trained as a ghost assassin with some martial arts involved. Action, great filmmaking, and funny.
He’s terrific as astronaut Gus Grissom in The Right Stuff.

@@LA_HA Was always disappointed that this didn't develop into another movie or 2. Probably another case of not doing well at the box office, but gained a following from VHS rentals and repeat airing on cable.
@@Dystopia1111 Yes. If I remember correctly, I think it ends with a sorta promise for another movie. Was definitely looking forward to a reaction of the movie and the bond between Remo and his trainer, played by Joel Grey -- great actor. haha
I really like the characters are actually intelligent in dealing with the dangers as opposed to the horror movie tropes. Both the people and the monsters are on a learning curve and keep coming up with new and better Solutions
I also love the intro to this film. I think they did such a good job at establishing the relationship between the two characters in just a matter of seconds.
The sound design for this film is wonderful.
This film, as others have already said, is a masterpiece; it sets up relationships, establishes the Graboids (what they can do re: waiting, digging, etc), and foreshadows so much of what happens - the ending (Stampede! right at the start), Mindy, what happened to Walter with the cooler & so much more.
A part that I particularly like was how the writers had Rhonda deal with Val & Earl bickering & not listening to her suggestion on the rock, no complaining or moaning, just straight into action & showing that it works.
"...The evil dead camera..." that got my like right there. Never thought of that, love the insight.
Dude, I saw this growing up on the Navajo Nation and it's a fun Sci-fi Action Comedy Horror film.
The idea for the movie came from Brent Maddock and SS Wilson.
They were in the Navy, 5 years before the movies release, they were sitting on a large Boulder in a Nevada Test Site, taking notes, and one of them said, "What if there was something under the ground that would never let us off this rock?" And thus, TREMORS was born.
Ah yes, Tremors. Thanks to this film every actor working in Hollywood is seven degrees of seperation from a giant prehistoric worm.
I introduced my son to this movie and to my DELIGHT it became one of his favorites! I love a good creature feature.
Been waiting for this one. This was one of my childhood faves, both funny and frightening for me. It knows exactly what it is and it has fun with it.
They capture that line extremely well without jeopardizing the characters “intelligence” all for jokes. Honestly really well written.

Low key one of the best, most re-watchable, and most enjoyable films of the last 50 years. Good casting, good acting, good screenplay, good directing, good effects, good editing.

The practical effects in this movie are so remarkable for the low-to-mid-level budget that this movie had at the time. They make the movie so much more immersive and help it age gracefully.
And, you're absolutely right. Fred Ward and Kevin Bacon have great chemistry together and hold down this movie's emotional through-line from beginning to end.
I watched this in the theaters when I was in college in the 80s. To see it in a full theater, especially during the rec room scene, was a blast. Kudos to Kevin bacon for doing this B movie classic.

Yes! Tremors is my all time favorite movie! I've been watching it since I was about 5 years old. Seen it well over one hundred times. It's a movie that I can watch and just enjoy each and every time I watch it. It always makes me laugh. So glad you watched this movie.
*Some* of the many cheapo sequels are genuinely really fun and worth it. A couple of them elevate the story (and obviously...you _need_ to be elevated to be okay.)
I love how Tremors has had this second wind and has become so popular over the years after not doing well on it's original release. For so long I felt like I was the only one.
This movie is so entertaining I actually watch when I’m in a bad mood as it totally turns me around.
This is still one of my all-time favorite movies, and it was produced on a budget of just $11,000,000. Every character is perfectly written and acted, the writing and dialogue are extremely organic, and the setting adds so much to the overall flow. There aren't many movies I'd call "perfect" or "flawless", but this is one of them. Also, that rec room gun wall reveal scene? Absolutely BRILLAINTLY executed. Your reaction to that moment alone was priceless and warranted a like on this video.
I love how open you are to almost any viewing experience. It's nice to watch you be surprised, and enjoy yourself anyway! Keep up the good work

Glad I voted for this :) The characters and the setting for this are just... Genuine. I lived out in this area. I lived in towns like this, and everything here and the way they act are damn near spot-on.
I really like the way they portrayed the people in this movie. Like you said several times, they ask clever questions, and they co-operate as well as they can. No unnecessary conflicts, no one working against the others. It's just the humans vs the creatures. That's pretty rare for for a movie of this kind.
This movie has THE best transitions of full scale to miniature in movie history. It's so good you don't even realize it. At around 15:42 he is dropping the gun on the floor. Then there's a quick cut and you see the gun on the floor as the camera pans over to the creature... which is a miniature. It's almost mind blowing once you realize what they did.

What I love about this film is how it blends genres - horror, sci-fi, even westerns - into an ensemble piece with characters you CARE for and a threat that's ACTUALLY terrifying. And a brilliant showcase of genius practical effects.
James, my friend, you have been providing a SEVERE source of continuous happiness for me (any many others). This streak has been lasting a whole now. I feel sure that if your still doing this in 50 years I'll still be watching. Can't wait to see your name in film credits.

So happy you're reacting to this James, as many others have said this was one of my favorite movies as a kid. The first true horror/comedy that I had ever seen, and while terrified as a kid by the gaboids I also loved the comedy and characters! Side note thank you for introducing me to the existence of camel spiders, gonna have nightmares as a grown-ass man after looking them up.
I watched this when I was a kid in the 90s, I was snuggled up in the couch pretending to be asleep and my dad put it on and I secretly watched it. One of the first "scary movies" I ever saw. A classic.

For me Tremors is almost the ideal fun movie.
The production is flawless, the script and acting are just a perfect blend of tension and comedy. Super likeable characters, and an actually believable monster.
And, like you said, not a single wasted scene.
Plus the way every time they ramp up the tension, it flows entirely naturally and logically from the previous scene.
Finally you reacted to this movie. It’s so underrated as a comedy/horror/sci-fi. Grew up to this movie and I love it. Also Burt gummer is a badass. Great vid

This is a real gem of a film. I remember watching it for the first time and enjoying it so much.
I say this on every Tremors reaction, but you can’t say enough about how amazing and fun the chemistry is between Bacon and Ward. And the screenplay is incredible for basically being a B monster flick. Similar to Aliens, the characters are stock on the surface, but each has a unique personality that comes to life right away. Casting top to bottom is fantastic as well, which helps all these things.
Tremors was always a Halloween classic for my friends and I growing up, a good mix of horror and I wouldn't say comedy but... lightheartedness. Another horror film that I think truly capitalizes off of not revealing the creature and leaving things up to your imagination in the beginning.
This is one of my favourite movies, because it is so well done.
I know a lot of people say to stop after the first one, but I genuinely enjoyed all of the Tremors movies.
They add a lot more to the backstory and humorous horror aspect.
This is such a great, fun film! I wouldn’t say it’s a masterpiece, but it’s a BLAST and it is very VERY well made overall.
Tremors is one of several movies that does well what horror movies need to do to "be believable". It has great REAL LIFE activities and dialogue. The pack of smokes stands out to me as a key moment.

Well here's the thing. This is an excellent movie. It's immaculately constructed.
One thing about the sound in this movie is pretty subtle yet genius, before they know that the graboids react to sound everyone is unintentionally making noise and whenever a scene ends the next scene begins with a loud noise.

I love this movie. One of the most re-watchable movies of all time.
I love this movie. We used to play a Tremors game on the playground when I was in, like, 5th grade when the movie first came out. There was this thing made of tires on the playground (with intersecting rows going through the middle, so think of a Trivial Pursuit pie) and you could crawl through. People on top of the tires would try to avoid the “graboids” inside the tires at recess.
The rest of the movies are… not good. But this one is one of the best “modern” B-movie throwbacks to classic B-movies from the ‘50s. Maybe the best.
One of the fun things of these movies is that the actor who plays Burt Gummer used to play Michael J Fox's dad in the sitcom "Family Ties", they filmed this around "Lone Pine" and Darwin California
I am beyond elated that I came home from work to see you reacting to this gem.
That gun scene with the far off echoing of shots is probably my favorite use of distanced noise and a tell that it's hitting the fan.

One of the best scenes in this movie on rewatch is the scene where they go back to the doctor's house, the lingering shot of them walking around making tons of noise, once you watch, you know how much danger they are putting themselves in.
I never would have given thought to how cool the overhead panning shots are. Thanks for bringing that up. It’s a cool visual they give us.

The main reason I love this movie is the interplay between Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward. For another great Ward movie check out Remo Williams:The Adventure Begins.👍
The Freezer backfire is one of the best set and payoffs I have seen in a movie, I have listened to talks and videos of writers citing it as a good example of how to do this. I'm not sure if anyone has told you, but the idea for this movie was quite literally: "Jaws, but you can't get out of the water".
Tremors was released 34 years ago today,January 19th 1990. Tremors was the first movie of the 1990’s I saw in the theater.
This is legit one of my favorite movies!!
Just watch part 2 and act like the series and 5 other sequels don't exist, please.
Fun fact the town was created entirely for the movie, roads and all. It was literally just a deserted flat when they scouted it for shooting lol.

Tremors genuinely is a film series I would absolutely recommend to anyone, even the TV series is enjoyable. It’s a “horror” I can watch with the wife which makes it even better!
For all the (well deserved) shit that some of the later installments get, Tremors remains one of my favorite movies series of all time. They've just got this level of campy charm that you just don't see in movies anymore.

Burt (The gun nut), became so popular with the fans, he literally became the main character of the tv series and movies 3,4,5,6, and 7, along with playing a major part the Tremors 2. Burt is the face of the Tremors franchise at this point.
Great characters & great foreshadowing, which shows great writing and direction!
Seeing this movie come up as a reaction just made my day. I really needed this in this particular moment. Thank you!
