  • Anytime you see a speaker design or subwoofer design there are compromises that had to be made in order to achieve that result. Whether you are designing a speaker or you are buying one, you won't want to miss this episode.

    I just want to comment on TVOR's comment at 16:40, he mentioned comb filtering not being as important when vertical because we hear with 2 ears on a horizontal axis. While definitely true (I agreed with it later on), it is still slightly audible, the comb filtering when vertical still plays a part into the power response and therefore reflections too, which do change the signature of the sound. Also if you change how you sit slightly at high frequencies you'd shift where your ears are within that comb filtering pattern and if pronounced enough is noticeable. This is why even when drivers are vertical, we try and put them as close to each other as possible to minimise this comb filtering effect even though it's purely in the vertical plane.

    I loved your question on the BBC dip by the way Justin (if you can see this)! I feel like not enough people know about it, or properly know the reasons for it! Thank you!

    to further explain the TMM 2.5 way, the .5 woofer, the bottom one, is typically used to help compensate for baffle step. using this second woofer to boost the frequencies below the step instead of lowering the frequencies above it increases speaker sensitivity.

    Been fairly interested in audio for many years, studied a little acoustics years ago, and never thought about speaker layouts (mtm etc) and horizontal placement, really interesting.

      I've taken notice in the last few days that it seems that a lot of live streams are taking awhile to compile video from StreamYard for it to play smoothly on YT, after the initial airing. It has taken a few hours, to sometimes a day or so depending on how long the stream was...

      @@Vegas_Baba808 wow! Thanks for the tip. I had no idea that was happening

      @@Toid Yeah... Just recently this has been happening. Trying to catch a Livin' Loud with Andy or Regular Guy Audio vid a few hours after it aired proved challenging.
      It feels like you are using dial-up in seeing the loading video (that irritating swirl) animation, then nothing loads for awhile. We are at the mercy of the background processes...

    One thing Erin's audio corner completely missed is that mtm crossovers are simpler. Once you get into three way designs you can get very sub par parts.

    • @Toid
      @Toid  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good point. And MTM is going to just be a two-way crossover where a three-way crossover will utilize more components. Either of them could use subpar components. Definitely a good point.

    • @theoracleprodigy
      @theoracleprodigy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Toid Oh for sure either could have very subpar components. Just a three way will always have more in the signal path and more than that can get wrong. I've always been a fan of mtm for that reason. Not that there are many good retail mtm but diy has a ton.

    I didn’t see any discussion about full ranges like the ones from Fostex, Mark Audio, Lowther etc. nor did they discuss push-push side woofers like the ones from Audio Physics or the KEF Blade.

    What about putting a tweeter/coaxial in a round baffle, but offset up and to the side. Wouldn't that be good as the distance to the edge is different all around?

    Why is someone that has never built kick panels, owned kick panels, or probably heard kick panels... telling us to use kickpanels(ideally lol). This is the conundrum to me with Car Audio TH-camrs or Audio TH-camrs that have hardly any experience while giving viewers advice. It's no wonder so many people get off course, and companies like SMD support this. I completely respect Toid... but the other half... sometimes makes me wonder why he's even here... ? 😆
