Always hate going on the simracing Reddit and seeing people bash new players when they are asking for help for games like Forza and GT. Everyone starts somewhere and sure they are not real sims, but to them this is the best. Don't gate-keep and bash our newer players, we all started with controllers.

I began sim racing in the late 90s. My first cockpit was around 2013. A few years later I had to sell it and go back to a wheel clamped to a desk, until around 2020 when I got another cockpit. A wheel clamped to a desk can provide a lot of satisfaction. It kept me happy for many years.

You can honestly get 90% of the way there with a good table and mount. I even have triple monitors on arms so that when I'm not racing, I can set them in different configurations for different occasions like if I have a buddy over, he can use one of the monitors easily. I like the flexibility a desk setup brings for me! You do you as should everyone else! We all just love to race!

Just started 6 months ago and I truly got the bug. I've always been into racing games since I was a kid, but didn't realize how much I loved it until I bought my first wheel and pedal set. 6 months in and now I have a 8020 rig, with an ultrawide, and its own dedicated PC. Still with Thurstmaster wheel and pedals, but I hope to switch those out once I hit my one year mark as a little "congratulations" to myself for finding the best hobby ever.

All of this, so true. The beauty of sim racing is it's as deep as the time and effort you're willing to give it. Wanna be a rookie? Jump right in! Wanna be an intermediate who wins the odd race here and there? Give it a year, learn, practice. Wanna become an alien? Give it ten and steadily upgrade. You don't need a crazy rig to test the water, but once you dip your toe it's hard not to slip and fall in!

always had sim stuff since I could remember, when I was 3 years old, my dad built this super solid rig with wood from my baby crib, the base from a treadmill, a ton of ratchet straps and a seat from a 3rd gen camaro, neatly configured for a Logitech Driving force GT for the PS2 when we would play Gran Turismo 4. had that for a long while even through the PS3 days with GT5 and 6, until our pitbull puppy decided to make it their chew toy and bed. when GT Sport came out I got a full T300 setup and just used my desk and floor, had a lot of fun still and years later got next level racing GT lite seat for it. I always had racing as a casual hobby of mine until years ago it became a passion, got into the heavy racing sims and really fell into the pit. trying for a big upgrade soon, cant wait.

I started out 5+ years ago playing GT Sport with a T150 clamped to a folding dinner tray. Upgraded the rig to a GT Omega wheelstand w/ rear seat frame and bucket seat. Quickly upgraded to the Fanatec CSL Elite PS4 bundle and eventually the GT DD Pro 8nm. I played nothing but GT until about a week ago when I switched to iRacing. I wish I would've just went all in from the beginning but I couldn't be happier with my sim racing journey.

I used to play Forza a lot and my wife bought me a G29 and i set that up in my office desk with the Xbox and played that for a while. Then i got into iracing in 2023 and used the G29 but i had been looking at better stuff and then i saw the micro center had the Asetek TK edition stuff and i get it for less then $900 for the wheel base formula wheel and pedals. Then i ordered a racing cockpits 8020 rig and triple 27" monitors. Now i'm outfitting it with air flow. I have mocked up vent locations and i have pulled an old computer apart and have a blower motor from a car hooked to that power supply and I'm working on getting the fan speed controler working. Then i will find some vents I like at the Jy and setup my rig with massive driver cooling ! what started out as a once in awhile thing has turned into 3 hours or so a few nights a week and it has been well worth it.

Use to game on xbox 360 with that same original xbox force feedback wheel from 2007-2012 (mostly Nascar games) before moving and not having time for it. I remember that it was called " wireless" but had cords strung across the living room to the couch lol. I actually started Sim-Racing (Forza7/AC/World of Outlaws dirt racing) in spring of 2023 using a T-248 bundle mounted to my coffee table using a small piece of plywood and automotive quick clamps (pedals stabilized using duct tape around the table legs so it didn't slide). Then in July 2023 I put a 1070ti in my i7 gen6 PC and built a small wooden rig in the basement using my T-248 setup (adding the cheaper TH8s shifter) and a passenger seat out of a demolition derby car (2008 Toyota Camry). I started out iRacing doing dirt/asphalt Ovals (Armed4gaming and Gavin Ropchan to blame). Shortly after I found your American muscle Series videos on TH-cam and started watching you on Twitch. Upgraded pedals to CSL elite v2 and shifter to the Fanatec ClubSport during black Friday 2023 (never got my DD1 wheelbase). Decided AMS looked like too much fun not to try so I signed up for Season6 of AMS and gave road racing Mustangs a try. I upgraded to Asetek Forte base and round wheel about midway through the season (modified the wood rig a little to handle the increased torc). First taste of competitive road racing went about as well as expected finishing nearly dead last in points but had a lot of fun. OfCourse my wife just loves it (she curses Malone's name every Sunday and Tuesday) when I spend half the night in the basement yelling "F#?K missed the Apex". My advice to anyone looking to try it out is give it a shot and don't just give up if you think you stink at it. Give it time to learn and yes better equipment does give you better feedback, which makes learning that much faster but isn't necessary at the start. The Sim community has been awesome (minus a few knuckle heads). Most are very forgiving and helpful if you apologize and ask for advice. Don't expect anyone to hold your hand and yes you will get an earful if you repeat the same mistakes often. But all in all Sim-Racing is a ton of fun.
Don't forget to watch AMS every Tuesday on Prime-Time Racing Tv (on TH-cam) and Matt Malone on @TH-cam or @Twitch. Just don't throw the poor guy under the bus with your significant other (for the iracing addiction you may end up with) like I did!

Started with a used G25 in 2011, and then build a rig for it in 2014 after racing at a desk. I then modded the G25 with the SRW-S1 wheel, and build a mild steel rig for everything when i got triples. Then jumped to a t300RS base (still logitech pedals). I then got a set of CSL elite LC pedals as a graduation gift from my in laws. 2020 was the year i moved to DD with the SC2 and a 8020 rig from Simlabs. Used the T300RS rim on the simucube for a while before buying the P1Sim Eau Rouge wheel. Got my hands on a fanatec h-pattern start of last year, and thats the slobe slipped... so far...

I remember starting my sim racing career on my family's first PC as a kid. A mid 90's Compaq playing Need For Speed II SE. All my allowances/gift money went to CompUSA for a Voodoo 2 and what I thought was the absolute coolest thing I knew about -- the Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback Wheel. You're absolutely right about the GOT EM moment. NASCAR Racing 4 was the next big game, followed by NR2003, which my computer cound't play without upgrading, which wasn't in the cards.
I got right back in to the hobby around when ACC came out with with a TM TMX Pro that I used for like 2 years mounted to the desk, but the chair rolls back when you brake. Then a cheap Raceroom rig came, so on, and so on. This week marks a 'completion moment' for the current evolution of the rig, full Simagic gear on a P1X-Pro, Buttkicker, 49-in Ultrawide... easily the $4k rig you mention. Took 5 years for me to get in this far, and there's still more to add in the future.
To anyone interested in starting, so long as the wheel has FFB and not just a centering spring, it'll be a great starting point. Come race with us!

In 1998 papyrus released a free demo called "Grand Prix Legends" the 1967 formula one season. At the time I worked in a pc repair shop, only having played Nintendo or xbox before, I had very little idea of what I was about to experience. And after 20 minutes playing on the "trainer" level car which was the default. I found the "grand prix" tab in car set-up. This unleashed all the power and I was hooked. I had a full top of the line pc (voodoo2 3dfx)and Microsoft force feedback wheel ordered the next day on staff account and had it set up by the end of the week.
And for 10 years I played Gpl almost exclusively. Upgraded to g27 with shifter. I took off a few years to have a family, started racing again using a joystick, taught my son to drive at 3 or 4 sitting on my lap. Then he got me hooked on iRacing this year. Now i have his old g29.. my 25+year old g27 pedals.. a nice set of triples and decent gaming pc. I'm nearly 50.. still hooked and looking to upgrade my set-up slowly. Pedals are next..

I had a G27 to play some games casually, never really got into it too heavily.
Got project cars 2 and got the wheel out of storage, got a Chinese knockoff playseat challenge, and realised it had VR support so used my htc vive. Wow, unreal feeling of being transported to Watkins Glen.
Moved to a G29 for GT sport, got into the idea of a format, practice quali, race.
RF2 got me into learning to race without a racing line.
My friend signed up to iracing during quarantine, so I followed.
Slippery slope, thrustmaster ts-pc and trak racer tr8. Which was a waste of money because shortly after I upgraded again.
Simagic alpha, p2000 pedals, next level racing f GT elite.
Sadly got divorced and she stole all the equipment. So ended up with nothing.
A year later I got a moza r9, srp pedals and a nxl fgt lite and a pico4 vr.
I loved getting my hobby back and helped with my mental health.
Watched your journey with asetek and knew my next upgrade needed to be better than what I used to have, so I upgraded to asetek invicta wheelbase, invicta s pedals, trak racer tr160 mk4 rig, and I’ve been winning more than I ever did with my simagic.
Thanks for letting me watch you during the year I had no other way to race and here’s to many more years of simracing

I started on a thrustmaster setup clamped to a desk and an old office chair back in 1994 playing NASCAR Racing by Papyrus over a dial-up connection with one of my work friends. Unfortunatley, far too many sim racers put more emphasis on getting better equipment than they do in getter a higher SR and IR. They get the high dollar equipment then expect that equipment to make them better on track. They're spending money on peripherals when they should be spending time in practice sessions. Upgrading the hardware on their rig when they should be focused on improving the software in their skull. Fancy pedals and wheel rims will only take you so far, after that it depends on the gray matter...

Man I started out on iRacing with an Xbox controller. A few months later I got a G29 and clamped it to my desk. Then I got a wheel stand. Upgraded to a 34” ultrawide monitor. Picked up a monitor arm desk mount to bring the monitor closer eventually.. about 6 months later, I upgraded to the thrustmaster TS-PC w/ the older Ferrari F1 wheel and the T-LCM loadcell pedals. Later on I picked up a knockoff Playseat rig and only used the seat. My wheel stand was more stable so I made a Frankenstein rig.
After another 2 years, I upgraded to the thrustmaster DD base with the Ferrari SF1000 wheel. A couple of months later, I finally picked up a full rig. Now I’m on triples using some desk mounts. So my next upgrade will be a triple monitor stand. The cycle will continue lol

I started in 2012 with the old fanatec Porsche belt driven wheels and pedals on a wheel stand. Upgraded to the csr elite pedals and ran that setup for awhile. Then I got the Thrustmaster tx base with the 599xx wheel. Eventually the tx base stopped working and I got the TS-PC base. Ran vr since the rift cv1, then the rift s and the reverb g2. Now I have triple 32 inch curved monitors on a sim lab rig with huesinkveld sprint pedals. Still use the TS-PC with a few different rims.

Bought a used $400 computer for my son. Plugged in my VERY used G29 and clamped it to his desk and launched Assetto Corsa. It was like 95% as fun as doing it with my NextLevelRacing Rig + Fanatec DD + Ultrawide screen. If I had to get rid of all my stuff for some reason and go back to the G29. I would still be happy to be honest.

If anybody is intimidated by this equipment and how much it costs - I've been on iRacing for 13 years and I was on a Logitech G27 desk mount setup for over 10 years. I reached a peak iRating of 6700 on oval and 5200 on road on that setup, I only recently switched to a load cell pedal set and I'm still on the G27 wheel (will finally get a DD soonish). Oh, and I've been on a single 27" monitor most of that time too. You don't need a super high level setup or even a mid level setup to start or progress at all.

It's important to show this, because sometimes it can seem overwhelming or ... "If I don't get what he's having, I'm not doing it right."
Took me a while to learn that and I'm comfortable using an Xbox One X/S controller for racing, FPS, RPG, and more. I could get a Logitech wheel, but I found that moving it back and forth was preventing me from enjoying it all. Maybe one day I'll have a decent 2nd pc - or not. I'm content :D

It does sound kind of nuts spending a few thousand on sim gear, but if you really want to race and the alternative is spending tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars per year to race cars, for a hobby/ dreams of turning pro, a few thou isn't that bad.
I would even argue you would get more value for your money getting everything you could to enhance the realism spending ~ $20k total on a rig is better value than spending that much or more every year (including travel, hotel bills, etc).
